Gorgonex — The Encounter

Winged butcher of the lower depths, twin axes raised · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Gorgonex

Of the butchers bound below, none are named with such dread as Gorgonex, the Twin-Axe. The grimoires hold that it was forged, not born, in the deepest foundries of the pit, where the spirits hammer captured souls into living armor and graft chitin to flesh until the two cannot be parted. They say a second mouth was set into its breast so that it might feed even while its hands are full of killing. Gorgonex does not command legions; it is unleashed upon them, a siege engine of meat and iron loosed at the front of an assault to break a line before the true masters arrive. It dives from above on red wings, axes wheeling, and where it lands the maw in its chest opens to swallow what the blades leave behind. Conjurers who would call it are warned: the binding circle must hold, for it hungers without rank, reason, or rest.

Maw in the Chest. A second fanged mouth gapes in the creature's torso. When Gorgonex hits the same target with both axes in one turn, that target must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or be bitten for an extra 9 (2d8) piercing damage as the maw lunges.

Diving Charge. If Gorgonex flies at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with an axe on the same turn, the target takes an extra 7 (2d6) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Gorgonex makes two Demon-Axe attacks.

Demon-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+4) slashing damage.

Searing Roar (Recharge 5-6). Gorgonex unleashes a blast of hellish breath in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area takes 21 (6d6) fire damage, or half on a successful DC 14 Dexterity saving throw.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wing Buffet (Reaction). When a creature Gorgonex can see ends its movement within 5 feet of it, Gorgonex beats its wings; the creature must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away and knocked prone.

A Large demon of fused iron plate and flayed red muscle, its torso split by a second fanged maw and its leathery wings spread wide as it raises a jagged battleaxe in each fist.

Bound Hunger (signature). Once per turn, when the Bound reduces a creature to 0 hit points with an axe, you (its summoner) gain 5 temporary hit points as the chest-maw feeds on its behalf.

Actions

Demon-Axe. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+4) slashing damage, and the Bound may make a second axe attack against the same target as part of this action.

Reactions

Wing Buffet. When an enemy ends its move within 5 feet of the Bound, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be pushed 10 feet and knocked prone.

A binding sigil burns on its iron breastplate, its wings half-furled in grudging service to the one who holds the circle.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP7d10+14 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open from the air with a Diving Charge to knock a frontliner prone, then carve with both axes. Kill-priority is the lowest-AC striker; the chest-maw punishes anyone it pins down. At this tier it is a brutal solo fight for a small party or one heavy of a larger encounter — pair it with a caster or commander rather than running it alone as the climax.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d10+45 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Dive on the squishiest target, land both axes to trigger the chest-maw bite, then Searing Roar the moment two or more PCs cluster to heal or buff. Use Wing Buffet to keep meleers from surrounding it. This is an elite add-on — field it alongside a flagship boss or a pack of lesser demons so the party can't focus it down before it does its damage.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP21d10+84 (199) To-hit+9Save DC16

Stays airborne, diving in and out so melee PCs waste turns chasing; Searing Roar resets fights when the party bunches. Open on backline casters, retreat with flight when bloodied, then re-dive. At this tier it is a lieutenant, not the climax — pair it with a bigger threat or run two of them flanking a lair so the action economy holds against a full party.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Gorgonex?

Gorgonex is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) in its native Tier 2 form — a Large fiend bruiser for parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) so you can drop it into any campaign.

Can Gorgonex be a companion or ally?

Yes — a bound version is included as a summoned ally. "Gorgonex, Bound" serves a summoner who holds its binding circle, with reduced hit points (76), its twin-axe assault, the Wing Buffet reaction, and a Bound Hunger feature that grants you temporary hit points when its chest-maw feeds on a kill.

Is Gorgonex a solo boss?

No — Gorgonex has no legendary actions, so a four-PC party will out-act it. It shines as an elite add-on: field it beside a flagship demon, a spellcaster, or a pack of lesser fiends so it can dive, carve, and Roar before the party can focus it down.
