Morbi — The Encounter

Horned mother of plagues, who swings the censer of rot · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Morbi

They name her Morbi, the Horned Mother, and where her censer swings the air turns gray and the wells run thick. The old plague-scrolls hold that she was a demon of pestilence summoned by a doomed cult who begged her to spare them and were instead made her first carriers. Her crown is no ornament but bone grown through bone, and the many arms that coil from her back are said to be the souls of those she has rotted, drawn out and fused into her service. She does not slay swiftly; she savors the slow turning of flesh to ruin, walking unhurried through fields she has emptied. Healers who burn her sign over their doors claim it keeps her out, yet she answers only to the rites that called her, and those words are guarded in no honest grimoire. Smell sulfur and sweetness together, the scriptures warn, and bar the door against the Horned Mother.

Censer of Rot. Morbi carries a smoking infernal censer on one of her coiling arms. While she holds it, any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of her must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) poison damage and be poisoned until the start of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this trait until the end of its next turn.

Coiling Arms. Morbi's tentacle-arms let her wield her staff, censer, and reach in several directions at once. She can make opportunity attacks against any creature that enters or leaves a space within 10 feet of her, not just within 5 feet.

Magic Resistance. Morbi has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Morbi makes two attacks: one with her Plague Staff and one with a Coiling Tendril. She can use Spew Contagion in place of either attack if it is available.

Plague Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Coiling Tendril. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Spew Contagion (Recharge 5-6). Morbi exhales a cone of black pestilence in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails is also poisoned for 1 minute and can repeat the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Contagious Recoil. Reaction. When a creature within 10 feet hits Morbi with a melee attack, she lashes a tendril back at it. The attacker must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 5 (1d6 + 2) poison damage and have disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn.

A horned, many-armed witch-mother crowned in curling ram horns, Morbi sways atop a writhing nest of plague-tendrils, swinging a smoking censer of rot over a skull-strewn altar.

Smoke of Wards (signature). Morbi swings a purified censer. Allies within 10 feet have advantage on saving throws against being poisoned and against disease.

Actions

Censer Chain. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage.

Reactions

Clear the Air. Reaction. When an ally within 10 feet fails a save against poison, Morbi lets them reroll it once.

A plague-orphan who turned a stolen censer to cleansing, Morbi hunts the Horned Mother's spoor to spare others her own family's fate.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d8+18 (45) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open by swinging the censer into the cluster so the party eats poison just for standing close, then drag the front-liner prone with a tendril. Keep her at 10-foot reach so Coiling Arms punishes anyone trying to slip past. At this tier she is a deadly mid-fight reveal, not a fair brawl; lead with the Cursed Cultists as fodder and let her finish the survivors.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+6Save DC14

Open with Spew Contagion the moment two or more PCs bunch up, then Multiattack the lowest-HP caster to keep them poisoned and off their spells. Kill-priority is any healer trying to scrub the poison; Contagious Recoil makes melee on her costly, so make them choose. Pair her with Plague Crawlers or Cursed Fanatics to body-block while she rots the backline from the center of the room.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+8Save DC16

Treat her as a plague-lair lieutenant, not a solo: stage her atop her altar amid a swarm of crawlers so Coiling Arms and Censer of Rot tax everyone who closes. Open with Spew Contagion, then Multiattack the strongest single-target damage dealer to lock them poisoned. Pair her with a bigger flagship threat (a plague golem or a greater fiend) so the party can never safely turn their backs on the Horned Mother.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Morbi?

Morbi is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a level 5-10 party, the tier her numbers are tuned to. Scaled stat blocks are provided for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and tier 3 (levels 11-15) if you want to drop her into a different campaign without rebuilding her.

Can Morbi be a companion or ally?

Not Morbi herself, she is a chaotic-evil plague demon. If you want a friendly version of the theme, use the companion Cinder, Censer-Bound, a plague-orphan who turned a cleansing censer against the Horned Mother and aids the party with anti-poison wards.

Is Morbi a boss, or an add to a bigger fight?

She is an add-on lieutenant, not a solo boss. She lacks legendary actions, so a full party will out-act her one-on-one; she shines paired with plague crawlers, cultists, or a larger flagship threat where her censer aura and 10-foot reach punish a clustered party.
