Mushroom Runii
Mushroom Runii — The Encounter
Hooded spore-mage of the toadstool ring · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mushroom Runii
The Runii are the quiet elders of the toadstool rings, fungus-folk whose flesh is woven of mycelium and whose eyes are clustered spore-pits that glow when they speak. They do not see the world so much as taste it on the air, reading the warmth and breath of every living thing that strays into their grove. A Runii rarely raises its staff in anger; it would rather fog an intruder with sleep-spores and let the forest carry them gently away. But when the ring itself is threatened, the elder calls up choking clouds from the loam and hammers its twisted staff against the earth, and the whole glade exhales poison. Travelers who have wintered among them tell of warm broth, riddling lullabies, and the soft phosphor glow of an elder keeping watch. Burn one grove, and every Runii for a league will remember the smell, and the welcome will never come again.
Run Mushroom Runii in Sixty Seconds
- Hold ranged. The Runii wants distance. Keep it 30-60 ft. back, lob Spore Burst, and only swing the staff if cornered.
- Open with Choking Cloud the first round the party bunches up; that's its biggest single hit and it locks down a chokepoint.
- Kill-priority: the firestarter. It targets whoever threatens the grove or its companion first; protect those and it stays cagey.
- When bloodied, blink and stall. Use Spore Veil on the next hit, retreat into difficult terrain via Sporewalk, and recharge Choking Cloud.
- Three ways to run it: a peaceful grove-keeper that only fights if provoked, a poison-support caster behind brutes, or the venom hub of a full fungal lair.
Mushroom Runii
Small fey, neutral
CR 2 · 450 XP · GUIDELINESpore-Sight. The Runii has no true eyes; the glowing pores on its face sense vibration and warmth. It is immune to the blinded condition and to gaze effects, and it can pinpoint any creature within 30 feet that is not behind total cover.
Sporewalk. Difficult terrain made of plants, fungi, or undergrowth costs the Runii no extra movement, and it can move through a space occupied by a creature one size larger as if it were difficult terrain.
Actions
Multiattack. The Runii uses Spore Burst, then makes one Staff attack.
Spore Burst. Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (3d6+3) poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Twisted Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn.
Choking Cloud (Recharge 5-6). The Runii slams its staff down, releasing a 15-foot-radius cloud of spores centered on a point within 30 feet. Each creature in the area must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) poison damage and being poisoned for 1 minute on a failure, or half damage and not poisoned on a success. The cloud is lightly obscured and lasts until the start of the Runii's next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Spore Veil. Reaction When a creature the Runii can sense within 30 feet hits it with an attack, the Runii bursts into a puff of spores and teleports up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space it can sense, leaving the attacker coughing (it has disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its turn).
A knee-high fungal sage swallowed by a hood and robe two sizes too big, its face nothing but glowing orange spore-pits, leaning on a staff of living, spiral-grown wood.
Mushroom Runii, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINESymbiotic Bloom (signature). While within 10 feet of its bonded ally, Mushroom Runii and that ally gain resistance to poison damage and advantage on saving throws against being poisoned.
Actions
Spore Lash. Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 40 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (2d6+1) poison damage.
Reactions
Pollen Screen. Reaction When a creature it can see within 20 feet is hit by an attack, Mushroom Runii releases a screen of pollen; the attack deals 1d6 less damage and the air around the target becomes lightly obscured until the start of Mushroom Runii's next turn.
A scuttling cap-and-stalk familiar that follows the elder everywhere, puffing protective pollen and chittering in a tongue only the Runii understand.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Choking Cloud on the most clustered cluster of PCs, then snipe Spore Burst from cover and Sporewalk through the undergrowth. Kill-priority: anyone trying to torch the grove or flank it. Pair it with melee mushroom-folk or beasts to screen it while it lobs poison.
As an elevated grove-warden, open with Choking Cloud and use Spore Veil to blink away from melee. Focus Spore Burst on low-CON casters to keep them poisoned. Run it as support behind tougher fungal brutes, not alone.
At this tier it is the venom-engine of a fungal lair, not a soloist. Open with Choking Cloud, blink with Spore Veil, and reapply poison to the party's anchor. Pair it with a bigger threat (a fungal giant or a swarm of myconid kin) and let those minions hold the line while the Runii poisons from the back.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mushroom Runii?
Its home build is CR 2 (450 XP), a Tier 1 fey spellcaster. The stat record also gives Tier 2 and Tier 3 columns so you can scale the same kit up to a CR 6 or CR 11 grove-warden without changing its traits or actions.
Can Mushroom Runii be a companion or ally?
Yes. A non-hostile Runii makes an excellent guide and field healer of poisons, and the record includes a bonded companion, Pip the Spore-Sworn, a cap-and-stalk familiar that grants poison resistance and screens allies with pollen.
Is the Runii hostile by default?
No. Runii are gentle grove-elders who prefer to fog intruders to sleep and usher them out. They only fight in earnest when the toadstool ring is attacked, at which point the Choking Cloud and staff come out.
