Mushroom Zylli
Mushroom Zylli — The Encounter
Spore-Robed Sage of the Hidden Tribe · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mushroom Zylli
Among the fungal folk of the Ashitake Tribe, the Zylli are reckoned elders, though none can say how many seasons one has stood. They take root where the canopy is thickest and the loam is rich with rot, growing slow and wise in the dark. A Zylli's spotted cap is no mere ornament; it is its mind, its memory, and its alarm, for at the first wound it bursts into a stinging cloud that drives off the foolish and the greedy. The tribe sends them forth as healers and wardens, their root-staffs drawing up the marrow of the wood to mend their kin. Travelers who treat the forest gently may find a Zylli will share a draught that closes wounds; those who burn or hack the undergrowth learn that the little sages can turn the very air to poison, and that where one stands, a hundred unseen sprouts answer its call.
Run Mushroom Zylli in Sixty Seconds
- What it is a back-line fungal healer-caster, not a damage dealer; it exists to keep nastier things alive.
- Open with Spore Bolt at range and stay in the undergrowth where Forest Step gives it cover and Stealth.
- Kill-priority high if it is healing a boss, low if it is fighting solo; players should burst it before it tops the flagship back up.
- When bloodied it leans on Spore Cloud and Healing Spores, retreating through plant terrain to stay out of reach.
- Three ways to run it field medic behind a brute, ambush warden in a poisoned glade, or one of many sages in a fungal court.
Mushroom Zylli
Small plant, neutral
CR 2 · 450 XP · GUIDELINESpore Cloud. When the Zylli takes damage, it releases a burst of spores. Each creature within 5 feet must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Forest Step. The Zylli ignores difficult terrain made of plants, undergrowth, or fungal growth, and has advantage on Stealth checks made in such terrain.
Actions
Multiattack. The Zylli makes one Staff attack and uses Spore Bolt.
Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage plus 3 (1d6) poison damage.
Spore Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (3d6) poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Healing Spores. Bonus Action. The Zylli touches one creature within 5 feet (including itself). That creature regains 5 (1d4+3) hit points. The Zylli can use this twice per day.
A diminutive figure cloaked in burnt-orange robes, its head a single spotted toadstool cap shadowing two glowing eyes, leaning on a coiling root-staff sprouted from the forest floor.
Mushroom Zylli, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINERestorative Spores (signature). Once per short rest, the Zylli sprays curative spores over an ally within 30 feet, ending one disease or the poisoned condition affecting it.
Actions
Spore Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +4 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d6) poison damage.
Reactions
Cushioning Burst. When an ally within 10 feet would fall prone or take falling damage, the Zylli releases soft spores; the ally reduces the triggering damage by 1d6 or stays on its feet.
Bound to a gentle warden, the little sage trails its companion like a walking apothecary, sealing wounds and sweetening poisoned air.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Spore Bolt from the back of the undergrowth, then keep distance and use Healing Spores on wounded allies. If the party clusters, target the nearest melee fighter to stack the poisoned condition. Kill-priority is low on its own, so pair it with a frontline brute or a pack of fungal minions that benefit from its healing.
Hang back behind a tougher threat and stack poisoned on whoever closes in, leaning on Spore Cloud to punish melee. Use Healing Spores to keep a flagship ally upright. As a support caster it folds fast under focus fire, so screen it with minions or a lair full of difficult plant terrain.
Deploy it as the medic of a larger fungal court, never alone. It keeps the boss alive with Healing Spores and poisons the front rank with Spore Bolt; players who ignore it will watch the real threat heal back up. Pair it with a bigger menace and a warren of difficult terrain so it can never be pinned down.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mushroom Zylli?
Natively CR 2 (Tier 1, levels 1-4): AC 13, 45 HP, +4 to hit, save DC 12. The tiers block scales it to Tier 2 (~CR 6) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) using the same traits with bigger numbers.
Can Mushroom Zylli be a companion or ally?
Yes. The companion block, Zylli, Bound (AC 13, 27 HP), turns it into a gentle support familiar that cures poison and disease, fires a weak Spore Bolt, and cushions allies from falls.
Is the Zylli a good solo boss?
No. It is an add-on support creature, not solo_capable. It has no legendary actions and folds quickly to focus fire, so always pair it with a stronger threat or a swarm of minions it can heal.
