Questing Beast
Questing Beast — The Encounter
The Glatisant, beast of a hundred hounds' baying · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Questing Beast
In the chronicles of Logres it is called the Glatisant, the Questing Beast, named for the questing of hounds that forever sounds within its belly though no pack runs at its heels. Those who have glimpsed it speak of a head and neck like a serpent, the body of a leopard, the buttocks of a lion, and the feet of a hart, all bound into one impossible shape. King Pellinore pursued it across the kingdom until his dying breath, and after him Sir Palomides took up the endless chase, for the beast can never be slain by any who has not first abandoned all other purpose. It does not hunt and it does not hoard; it flees, drawing knights ever deeper into the wild until pride and reason are spent. To meet it on the road is reckoned an omen of strife to come, a sign that the realm itself has fallen into discord.
Run Questing Beast in Sixty Seconds
- It runs, it does not fight the Questing Beast is built to bound away and reset, not to stand and trade. Treat HP as a clock for how long the chase lasts.
- Open with Baying Within close to 30 feet of clustered PCs first so the bay strips their reactions, then bite the squishiest target.
- Kill-priority: anyone who can pin it grapplers, web/hold casters, and reach weapons are its only real threat. Everything else, it outpaces.
- When bloodied, lean on mobility spend Bound Away on every melee hit and the bonus Dash every turn; make them chase it into worse ground.
- Three ways to run it a lure that drags the party deeper, a harrier on a flagship boss's flank, or the omen-beast in a wilderness pursuit scene.
Questing Beast
Large monstrosity, unaligned
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEBaying Within. Each creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of the Questing Beast and can hear it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn, as the sound of thirty hounds bays out of the beast's belly. A creature that succeeds is immune to this trait for 24 hours.
Ever-Fleeing. The beast can take the Dash action as a bonus action on each of its turns. Opportunity attacks against it are made with disadvantage.
Actions
Multiattack. The Questing Beast makes two attacks: one with its Serpent Bite and one with its Hooves.
Serpent Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution save or take 7 (2d6) poison damage.
Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Bound Away. When a creature within 5 feet hits the beast with a melee attack, it can move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
A creature stitched from a serpent's spiked, fanged head, a leopard's spotted feathered flank, a lion's haunches, and the slender hooved legs of a hart, its long tail coiling like a second serpent as it bounds from its stony perch.
Questing Beast, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEQuarry's Scent (signature). Once per turn, when its bound rider hits a creature the beast has bitten this round, that attack deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage.
Actions
Serpent Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) piercing damage.
Reactions
Bound Away. When hit by a melee attack, the beast and any rider move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Tamed by no bridle but loyalty, it carries the one who ceased to hunt it, a tireless mount that never tires of the road.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by bounding into the open with Ever-Fleeing, then bite the softest body. Use Bound Away the instant a melee striker lands a hit and Dash out of reach. Pair it with skirmishing add-ons, never alone in a small room where it can be cornered.
Open by closing on a clustered party so Baying Within strips their reactions, then Multiattack the caster or healer. Kill-priority is anyone who can pin it down; Bound Away and bonus Dash keep it loose. Run it as the elusive lure that drags a party deeper toward a bigger threat or its lair.
Open with a charge through the back line, baying to lock down reactions before the Serpent Bite poisons a key target. It is fragile for this tier, so pair it with a flagship boss or a hunting pack and let it harry the flanks. Never the centerpiece; it flees and resets rather than trading blows.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Questing Beast?
Its home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a 5th-10th level party. Tier panels scale it down to roughly CR 2 for levels 1-4 and up to roughly CR 11 for levels 11-15, with traits identical at every tier and only the numbers shifting.
Can Questing Beast be a companion or ally?
Yes. The companion sidebar gives Glatisant, Bound, a tireless mount for the knight who ceased to hunt it, with a Quarry's Scent strike that rewards a rider for following up its bite, plus the same Bound Away escape.
Is the Questing Beast a boss monster?
No, it is an add-on, not a solo boss. It has no legendary actions and only a mobility reaction, so a four-player party will out-act it. Use it to harry the party or lure them toward a bigger threat rather than as a standalone centerpiece.
