Tigersaurus Rex
Tigersaurus Rex — The Encounter
Saber-fanged saurian apex of the lost reaches · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Tigersaurus Rex
Hunters of the deep reaches speak of a beast that should not be, as though two predators of different worlds were sewn into one. From the shoulders forward it is great cat: a mane of coarse fur, eyes that glint in the dark, and curved fangs longer than a dagger. From the shoulders back it is saurian, armored along the spine with bony scutes that run to the tip of a heavy, swinging tail. It does not roar to announce itself. It tracks the scent of blood for days, padding through fern and shadow on broad clawed feet, and reveals itself only in the final lunge, jaws agape. Those who survive describe the same horror: the patience of the cat married to the unstoppable mass of the lizard. It claims the highest ground and the freshest kills, and lesser beasts abandon a valley once its musk is found upon the trees. Where it dens, bones of every creature lie cracked and scattered.
Run Tigersaurus Rex in Sixty Seconds
- Open with the charge. Move 50 ft. straight at the most exposed PC and Bite — Saber Lunge adds 2d8 and a DC 17 prone save. A prone, bitten target sets up everything else.
- Grapple, then drag. A successful Bite grapples Medium-or-smaller prey (escape DC 15) and restrains it. Pull the captive away from healers so the party has to chase.
- Punish rescuers with Thrash. Every time an ally hits your grappled prey, spend the reaction for 2d8 — saving a friend should hurt the friend.
- Kill-priority: the grappled PC. Multiattack lets you Bite twice on a held target. Keep biting the captive until it drops, then pick the next-softest.
- Three ways to run it: ambush predator (Stealth from cover, one explosive charge), pack alpha (front the lesser beasts), or bound mount (a tamer rides and buffs it). It is an add-on, not a solo boss.
Tigersaurus Rex
Large monstrosity, unaligned
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINESaber Lunge. If the tigersaurus moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a Bite on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Keen Smell. The tigersaurus has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell, and ignores the effect of being blinded when tracking a creature it has wounded.
Actions
Multiattack. The tigersaurus makes one Bite attack and one Claw attack. If it has a creature grappled, it can make a second Bite attack against that creature instead of the Claw.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (3d8 + 6) piercing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 15). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained and the tigersaurus can't bite another target.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Thrash. When a creature the tigersaurus has grappled is hit by an attack from another creature, the tigersaurus can use its reaction to wrench the prey, dealing 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage to the grappled creature.
A nightmare of mismatched ages: a tiger's saber-fanged head and shaggy mane set upon the scaled, scute-ridged bulk of a tyrant lizard. It pads forward low and silent, then explodes into a charge.
Tigersaurus Rex, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEPack Instinct (signature). Tigersaurus Rex has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of Tigersaurus Rex's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and isn't incapacitated.
Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage, and a Medium or smaller target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Cover the Kill. When an ally within 10 feet is targeted by an attack, Tigersaurus Rex can snarl and lunge; the attacker must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom save or have disadvantage on that attack roll.
A half-grown tigersaurus that imprinted on its handler instead of the hunt — loyal, lethal, and still learning to share a meal.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from cover with a Saber Lunge to knock the front-liner prone, then bite-and-grapple the same target so the rest of the party must close to free them. Drag the grappled prey away from healers. At this tier it is a deadly capstone solo for a 1-4 party; thin it with a flooded chokepoint or a high ledge it must climb.
Open with a 50-ft. charge and Saber Lunge into the squishiest reachable PC, then grapple-bite to lock them down and use Thrash whenever allies hit the prey. Kill-priority is the grappled target. Pair it with a hunting beast or a beast-tamer who buffs it; do not run it alone against a level-8+ party that will simply out-action it.
Use it as the alpha of a pack or a beast-lord's mount: charge, grapple the controller, and let minions swarm the pinned PC. Thrash punishes allies for freeing them. It is muscle, not a finale — pair it with a bigger threat (a tamer, a swarm of lesser saurians, or a lair full of cover) so the party can't focus it down before the support arrives.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Tigersaurus Rex?
Its home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. The record also provides a CR 2-style build for levels 1-4 and a CR 11-style build for levels 11-15, with identical traits and only the numbers shifted.
Can Tigersaurus Rex be a companion or ally?
Yes — use the included companion, Cubclaw, Bound: a half-grown tigersaurus (AC 13, 82 HP) with Pack Instinct, a prone-on-hit Bite, and a Cover the Kill reaction. It fits a beast-master, a wilderness ranger, or a tamed-monster handler.
Is it a dinosaur or a cat?
Both, and statted as a Large monstrosity rather than a true beast. The saber-fanged head and mane drive its Saber Lunge and Keen Smell, while the saurian bulk and dorsal scutes give it heavy hide, high HP, and a punishing grapple-and-thrash game.
