Twilighteater
Twilighteater — The Encounter
Many-Eyed Devourer of the Failing Light · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Twilighteater
Where the last lamp gutters and the long dusk pools in the corners of the world, the Twilighteater hunts. The old grimoires name it among the things that crept in when the boundary between the lit world and the outer dark first thinned: a feeder not on flesh alone but on the comfort of seeing. Its many eyes were not given for itself, the scribes wrote, but stolen one by one from those it cornered in the gloom, each red orb a traveller who walked too far past the watch-fires. The gilded plate it wears is plunder, torn from the captains and priests who marched against it with torches held high and were swallowed torch and all. Hunters say you hear it before you meet it, the wet stirring of its feelers, and that the surest sign of its nearness is a light that will not stay bright. To strike it you must carry your own fire and refuse to let the dark have it, for the Twilighteater grows bold only where the seeing fails.
Run Twilighteater in Sixty Seconds
- Light first. Devour the Light dims everything within 20 ft.; if the party has no answer to darkness they fight at disadvantage all encounter, so make them spend a turn re-lighting.
- Open from gloom with a Gloom Lunge straight at the casters or healer, then Multiattack to lock the blind on.
- Kill-priority is whoever sustains the group's light or healing; the Maw blinds them, the claws finish them.
- When bloodied it stops chasing and plants over one downed target, blinding-and-clawing to keep a body on the floor.
- Three ways to run it: lone gloom-stalker that snuffs torches in a corridor, a pack leader with 2-3 Gloamlings, or muscle chained to a bigger boss that wants the party blind.
Twilighteater
Large aberration, neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEDevour the Light. Signature. Bright light within 20 feet of the Twilighteater dims to dim light, and dim light becomes darkness; magical light of 2nd level or lower is suppressed while in this radius. While in dim light or darkness, the Twilighteater has advantage on attack rolls and its claws deal an extra 7 (2d6) necrotic damage (included below).
Many Eyes. The Twilighteater cannot be surprised and has advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened. Each of its many eyes watches a different angle, so it perceives creatures even when its primary gaze is turned away.
Actions
Multiattack. The Twilighteater makes two Rending Claw attacks and one Maw of Feelers attack.
Rending Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.
Maw of Feelers. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn as the writhing feelers smother its eyes.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Gloom Lunge. Bonus Action. While in dim light or darkness, the Twilighteater moves up to 15 feet without provoking opportunity attacks.
A hulking aberration of failing-light blue and bone, sweeping tusks curving from its skull, ornate gold plate strapped to shoulder and thigh, and a face of red eyes set above a writhing knot of feelers where a mouth should be.
Twilighteater, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINELight-Drinker (signature). Once per turn, when an ally within 30 feet is in dim light or darkness, the Twilighteater can grant that ally advantage on its next attack roll before the start of its next turn.
Actions
Raking Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
Reactions
Smother. When a creature the Twilighteater can see within 5 feet hits an ally with an attack, the Twilighteater imposes disadvantage on that attack roll by flinging feelers across the attacker's eyes.
A lesser spawn of the devourer, half the master's bulk and twice as eager, it scuttles ahead to snuff the torches before the true horror arrives.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by Devouring the Light to plunge the party into dim light, then claw the nearest torch-bearer. Kill-priority is whoever sustains the group's light or healing. Pair it with a handful of skittering Gloamlings to gang the front line while it hunts the back.
Open from darkness with a Gloom Lunge into the casters, then Multiattack the blinded target so it stays sightless. If clustered, the Maw blinds one and the claws drop another; focus whoever carries the brightest light. As an add-on it shines beside a bigger boss or a small pack of Gloamlings, not alone.
Run it in its lair where its light-eating aura overlaps natural gloom, so the party fights half-blind from round one. Open on the healer, blind them, then wheel onto the next. Pair it with a bigger threat or a den of Gloamlings; this brute is a hammer, not the whole battle.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Twilighteater?
Its home build is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for a party of levels 5-10. Scale it down to roughly CR 2 for tier 1 or up to about CR 11 for tier 3 using the tier table; traits stay the same and only the numbers move.
Can Twilighteater be a companion or ally?
The Twilighteater itself is built as an adversary, but the bound Gloamling spawn (AC 14, 76 HP) works as a companion or summoned ally, drinking the light around your foes and smothering their attacks. The full devourer is too hungry and self-serving to take orders for long.
Why does fighting in the dark make it so dangerous?
Devour the Light forces dim light or darkness around it, granting it advantage on attacks and extra necrotic damage, while its Many Eyes mean it never suffers for the gloom. Bring sunlight, daylight spells, or a stubborn torch-bearer and the fight swings hard back toward you.
