Umbradon
Umbradon — The Encounter
Antlered Devourer of the Drowned Dark · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Umbradon
Where a temple sinks beneath black water, the locals learn to speak of Umbradon only in whispers, lest the speaking summon it. It is named among the lesser fiends as a feaster on the dying, drawn to wounds the way carrion-birds are drawn to a battlefield. Scholars of the abyssal hierarchies hold that it was once a guardian-thing bound to ward a holy place, corrupted across slow centuries until devotion curdled into hunger. The antlered crown it bears is said to be the ossified remnant of that broken vow, and the gold upon it the melted offerings of those it once protected. Its facial tendrils taste blood at a distance and tighten when prey weakens; the maw beneath drinks not merely flesh but the very vigor of the slain, which is why the wounded never seem to recover near it. It does not parley. It circles, it dreads, and it devours.
Run Umbradon in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the heal-lock. The Bite stops a target regaining hit points until your next turn. Bite the cleric or anyone the party is keeping alive, every round.
- Open with Lunge. Use the reaction to close 10 feet onto a backliner the instant they stop moving, then Multiattack them into the dirt.
- Kill-priority: the wounded. Devouring Maw heals Umbradon when it bites a creature below max HP, so finish bloodied PCs rather than spreading damage.
- When bloodied, its self-heal drops to 2d6, so the party should burst it past half and never let it bite a fresh target again.
- Three ways to run it: a flooded-temple guardian that circles and devours; a warlock's chained pet; or one of a pack of antlered fiends overwhelming a chokepoint.
Umbradon
Large fiend (demon), chaotic evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEAura of Dread. Any creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of Umbradon must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the start of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this aura for 24 hours.
Devouring Maw. Signature. When Umbradon hits a creature that is below its hit point maximum with its Bite, it regains 7 (2d6) hit points as the tendrils of its face drink the wound. While Umbradon has more than half its hit points, this healing increases to 10 (3d6).
Spiked Hide. A creature that grapples Umbradon or hits it with a melee attack while within 5 feet takes 4 (1d8) piercing damage from its spines.
Actions
Multiattack. Umbradon makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be unable to regain hit points until the start of Umbradon's next turn.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Lunge (Reaction). When a creature Umbradon can see ends its movement within 10 feet of it, Umbradon can move up to 10 feet toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks.
A hulking pale brute the color of drowned flesh, Umbradon wears a crown of antlered horns tipped in old gold, and a nest of writhing tendrils hangs where its face should be, framing a maw of needle teeth.
Umbradon, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEWound-Drinker (signature). When the bound Umbradon reduces an enemy to 0 hit points, an ally within 30 feet that it can see regains 5 (2d4) hit points.
Actions
Rending Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage.
Reactions
Shielding Bulk. When an adjacent ally is hit by an attack, the bound Umbradon interposes its spiked hide, reducing the damage by 1d10 and dealing 4 (1d8) piercing damage to a melee attacker.
Chained and half-tamed by a desperate warlock, this Umbradon hungers still, but turns its devouring on the master's foes.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with a Lunge into the squishiest caster, then bite to shut off their healing. If the party clusters, let Aura of Dread soften their first swings before you commit. Pair it with cultists or zombies that drive prey within reach of its claws.
Lunge onto a wounded PC and bite to lock their healing, then heal off the same target with Devouring Maw. Kill-priority is whoever is below max HP, since that feeds it. Run it alongside a bigger threat or a pack of lesser fiends so it never fights the whole party alone.
Anchor it in a flooded lair with minions herding the party into melee, where Spiked Hide punishes every strike. Bite the healer first to deny recovery, then sustain itself on the bloodied. This is a frontline bruiser, not a solo boss; pair it with a spellcasting controller to make the Aura of Dread bite.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Umbradon?
Umbradon is built as a CR 6 Large fiend (2,300 XP) at its native Tier 2, tuned for parties of levels 5-10. The stat record also gives drop-in Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) versions that keep the same traits and only shift AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC.
Can Umbradon be a companion or ally?
Yes. The 'Umbradon, Bound' profile models a warlock's chained, half-tamed devourer with roughly 60% of the adversary's hit points. Its Wound-Drinker trait heals an ally when it drops a foe, and Shielding Bulk lets it absorb a hit for a nearby companion while its spines bite back.
Is Umbradon a solo boss?
No. It is a frontline bruiser add-on, not a centerpiece. It lacks legendary actions, so a full party will out-act it; deploy it alongside a stronger controller, in a lair, or as part of a pack so it always has support.
