Voidreaver
Voidreaver — The Encounter
Carapaced devourer crawled from the ashes of the cities of the plain · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Voidreaver
When fire fell upon the cities of the plain, not all that perished went quietly into ash. From the molten ruin crawled things that had been people once, their guilt fused into chitin and their hunger sharpened into reaping talons. The grimoires name them voidreavers, for they reave the warmth from all they touch and leave only a cold, scoured emptiness behind. A voidreaver hunts the margins of caravans and the edges of sleeping camps, dragging its scythe-arms over rubble in dead silence until it is close enough to seize. It feels no fear and bargains for nothing; it remembers only the burning, and seeks to share it. Scholars warn that a single reaver is rarely alone, for the ash that birthed one tends to birth a brood. Where their clicking shrieks echo, salt and silence soon follow, and the living learn to travel only by the sun's full light.
Run Voidreaver in Sixty Seconds
- Reach first. Its claws hit at 10 ft. and it strikes with advantage before anyone has acted, so open from ambush and grab the squishiest target turn one.
- Kill-priority: the grappled. Concentrate the voidreaver on whoever it has grappled; that creature is dragged off and bitten until dropped.
- Feed the hunger. Every kill grants 10 temp HP and +10 ft. speed, so let it chain finishing blows on bloodied PCs to snowball.
- When bloodied, use Voidstep on the enemy turn to peel away from the melee wall and reposition onto a fresh back-line target.
- Three ways to run it: lone ambush predator at low tier, a paired brood of two-three at native tier, or a flanking isolator beside a flagship boss at high tier.
Voidreaver
Medium fiend (demon), chaotic evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEReaching Claws. The voidreaver's elongated, scythe-tipped arms give its claw attacks reach 10 ft. While it has not yet acted in combat, it has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that has not yet taken a turn.
Hunger of the Ashen City. Signature. The voidreaver was spawned in the cinders of a sin-burned city and feeds on the living. Whenever it reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a claw, the voidreaver gains 10 temporary hit points and its speed increases by 10 ft. until the end of its next turn.
Actions
Multiattack. The voidreaver makes two Scythe-Claw attacks.
Scythe-Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (3d6+4) slashing damage. If the target is a Medium or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 14). The voidreaver has two claws, each of which can grapple only one target.
Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature grappled by the voidreaver. Hit: 12 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Voidstep (Reaction). When a creature ends its turn within 10 ft. of the voidreaver, the voidreaver can move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
A gaunt, black-chitined horror that scuttles forward on long crab-like arms, each ending in a fan of crimson scythe-talons; a single burning red eye glares from beneath its hooded carapace.
Voidreaver, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEAshen Loyalty (signature). The cinderling will not leave a bonded ally's side. While within 5 ft. of its bond-holder, both creatures have advantage on saving throws against being frightened.
Actions
Talon Rake. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage.
Reactions
Interpose. When an ally within 5 ft. is hit by an attack, the cinderling can swap places with that ally and take the hit instead.
A smaller, half-formed reaver tamed before its hunger hardened, it shadows its keeper with skittering, faithful menace.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from cover, lunging 10 ft. to grapple the softest back-line target with Reaching Claws. Drag it away from the party and bite; if a clustered group forms, retreat and pick off stragglers. Pair it with a flagship boss or a small brood of cinderlings rather than running it alone.
Open by ambush against creatures that have not acted, claiming advantage from Reaching Claws, and grapple the caster or healer. Kill-priority is whoever it has grabbed; finishing a target fuels Hunger of the Ashen City for temp HP and extra speed, so let it chain kills. With minions or a lair, use Voidstep to keep slipping back to fresh prey.
Run it as a flanking terror beside a bigger threat: it grapples and isolates while the flagship boss controls the field. Open on the most mobile PC to pin them, bite to stack necrotic, and feed its speed buff by finishing wounded targets. Do not run it solo at this tier; pair it with a brood or a lair so the party cannot simply gang the single body.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Voidreaver?
Its native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. The stat block also includes scaled numbers for tiers 1 (levels 1-4) and 3 (levels 11-15); the traits and actions stay identical and only AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC move between bands.
Can Voidreaver be a companion or ally?
Not as the full adversary, but the record includes a tamed companion, the Cinderling, Bound (AC 14, 74 HP) with the Ashen Loyalty trait, a Talon Rake attack, and an Interpose reaction. It works as a loyal beast-style ally for a player or a friendly NPC handler.
Is the Voidreaver a solo boss?
No. It lacks legendary actions and is built as an add-on, an ambushing isolator that grapples and drags. Run it in a brood or alongside a larger flagship threat; a four-PC party will out-act a single reaver in the open.
