Bleach King Haldorak — The Encounter

Bleached revenant king who rides down the living · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Bleach King Haldorak

They name him the Bleach King, though the rolls that crowned him have long since rotted to powder. Haldorak fell in a winter campaign and was wrapped for burial in salt-bleached linen; the salt that should have hallowed him instead held his hatred whole, and he rose with his color leached out and his will intact. He rides still at the head of a column that never arrives, the Pale Reaver across his saddle, and where his standard passes the grass goes white and the warmth goes out of men. Survivors speak less of the wounds than of the cold that follows the blade, a chill that lingers in the marrow and will not be warmed by fire. He keeps the bearing of a sovereign and the patience of the buried, certain that the living are merely subjects who have not yet been told they are dead.

Bleaching Aura. Color and warmth drain from a 10-foot radius around Haldorak. A living creature that starts its turn there has disadvantage on death saving throws until the start of its next turn, and any creature that drops to 0 hit points within the aura does not stabilize on its own.

Dread Charge. If Haldorak moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and hits it with the Pale Reaver this turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) necrotic damage and must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Haldorak makes two attacks with the Pale Reaver.

Pale Reaver. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken until it finishes a long rest.

Withering Command (Recharge 5-6). Haldorak raises the Pale Reaver and the grave answers. Each living creature within 20 feet must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature reduced to 0 hit points this way and not killed outright is also knocked prone.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Grave-Cold Riposte. When a creature within 5 feet hits Haldorak with a melee attack, he can make one Pale Reaver attack against that creature.

A bleached, wrapping-bound king sits ramrod in ornate gold-and-verdigris grave-plate, a serrated greatsword wreathed in cold teal light across his lap as his pale charger rears mid-gallop.

Tireless Dead (signature). The charger is immune to poison and the exhaustion that comes from a forced march, and it can Dash as a bonus action without tiring.

Actions

Trampling Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and a Medium or smaller target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Carry the King. When its rider would be hit by an attack, the charger can interpose itself and become the target instead, taking the attack in the rider's place.

A gaunt, ice-eyed warhorse whose hide has gone the same bleached pallor as its master, it neither tires nor flinches and will gallop through fire to keep its king in the saddle.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by charging the softest line so Dread Charge knocks a target prone, then ride them down. Hold Withering Command for the moment two or more PCs cluster to pull the prone one up. Pair him with skeleton outriders so the party can't simply gang the rider; he is a vanguard threat, not the only threat.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP15d8+60 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Lead with Dread Charge into the back-line caster, prone them, and let the Pale Reaver's max-HP drain make the healer's job miserable. Fire Withering Command the instant melee bunches up around him. Kill-priority is whoever can dismount or restrain him; keep moving so the party never gets a full round of focus.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP24d8+96 (204) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run him as a lieutenant beside a bigger necromantic threat, never alone, with wights or a wraith filling the lair so a level-13 party cannot out-act him. Use the charger's speed and Carry the King to peel focus fire while the flagship boss does the heavy lifting. Open on the cleric, ride out, re-charge each round.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Bleach King Haldorak?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 17, 127 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 14. The tiers block also scales him down to a CR 2-ish T1 roadside threat or up to a CR 11-ish T3 lieutenant; the traits stay the same and only the numbers move.

Can Bleach King Haldorak be a companion or ally?

Haldorak himself is built as an adversary, but his mount, the Pale Charger, is provided as a ready companion (AC 13, 76 HP) with Tireless Dead, Trampling Hooves, and a Carry the King reaction that lets it take a hit meant for its rider.

Is Haldorak a solo boss?

No. He is a mounted vanguard add-on with no legendary actions, so a four-PC party will out-act him alone. Field him with skeletal outriders, a wight, or a bigger necromantic flagship and let his speed and charge make him the threat the party can't ignore.
