Cursedwraith — The Encounter

Winged Tormentor Crowned in Horn and Cinder · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Cursedwraith

Folk of the borderlands call it the cursedwraith, though it is no mere ghost. It is a spirit of murder grown a body of cinder and sinew, bound to the world by an oath of spite it swore as it fell from grace. Where it walks, the freshly slain do not rest: those struck down by its barbed trident linger in a half-death, neither living nor wholly gone, until consecrated rites release them. Grimoires warn that the creature feeds on this lingering, drawing strength from souls denied their passage. It serves no master willingly, answering only summons sealed in blood, and even then it bargains in curses rather than coin. Hunters who have survived its passage speak of a cold that no fire warms and wounds that never knit. To name it aloud, the old wardens say, is to invite its wings against your own roof before the moon turns full again.

Magic Resistance. The cursedwraith has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Withering Curse. Signature. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by the cursedwraith's trident does not stabilize on its own and rises again only if magic restores its full life. While the cursedwraith lives within 1 mile, such a creature cannot regain hit points from healing of 6th level or lower.

Actions

Multiattack. The cursedwraith makes two attacks: one with its cursed trident and one with its claws.

Cursed Trident. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8 + 4) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) necrotic damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or have its hit point maximum reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken until it finishes a long rest.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Vengeful Wing (Reaction). When a creature the cursedwraith can see within 5 feet hits it with a melee attack, the cursedwraith beats its wings and the attacker must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet away and knocked prone.

A towering red-hided demon with sweeping bat wings, jagged horns, and iron-banded greaves, it leans on a flaming barbed trident atop a broken cairn. Its hollow grin and clawed reach mark every kill it touches as cursed beyond ordinary death.

Cinder Tracker (signature). The emberhound has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell and ignores difficult terrain caused by ash, smoke, or flame.

Actions

Searing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (2d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Reactions

Guard the Tormentor. When a creature within 5 feet hits the cursedwraith, the emberhound can move up to half its speed toward that creature without provoking opportunity attacks.

A gaunt hound of smoldering coals that pads at the demon's heel, snapping at any who close on its master.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10 + 18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open from the air with the trident on the squishiest caster, then drop to claw the same target so its max HP bleeds away. Use Vengeful Wing to knock back the first melee fighter that reaches it. Pair it with a bigger fiend or a swarm of weak undead so the party can't simply focus it.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d10 + 52 (123) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open in the air, dive on the healer, and lead with the trident (Withering Curse shuts off their low-level healing for the fight). Multiattack the same target to stack max-HP reduction; kill-priority is whoever keeps the party standing. When bloodied, fly out of reach and pepper melee only when Vengeful Wing can answer. Best run alongside minions or a flagship boss, not alone.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d10 + 100 (210) To-hit+9Save DC16

Use it as a lieutenant in a lair or alongside a larger threat, not as the lone boss. Open from above on the back line, Withering Curse the cleric, and let Vengeful Wing punish anyone who locks it down. Spread max-HP reduction across multiple PCs so the whole party is fragile when the main villain commits.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Cursedwraith?

Its home tier is CR 6 (2,300 XP), built for level 5-10 parties. Scale it down to roughly CR 2 for tiers 1-4 or up to about CR 11 for tiers 11-15 using the tier table; the traits stay identical and only AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC change.

Can Cursedwraith be a companion or ally?

As written it is a hostile demon, but a high-Charisma binder or a desperate warlock could leash it for a scene. It bargains only in curses and betrays the moment its oath is satisfied, so treat any alliance as temporary and dangerous.

Is the cursedwraith actually undead despite the name?

Mechanically it is a fiend (demon), not undead, so turn undead and undead-specific effects do not work on it. Its 'wraith' name comes from the lingering half-death it inflicts via Withering Curse, not from its own type.
