Jhask the Defiler
Jhask the Defiler — The Encounter
Horned grave-sorcerer wreathed in grasping thorns of bone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Jhask the Defiler
They name him the Defiler because he leaves no grave at peace. Where Jhask passes, root and bone alike turn traitor: the soil vomits up thorned briars of marrow that drink the warmth from anything they pierce, and the buried dead twist beneath their markers in unwilling answer to his hum. He was, the village mourners whisper, a hedge-conjurer who bargained his own death away by binding his heart into the thicket that now crowns him; sever a hundred thorns and a hundred more uncoil from the loam. He speaks little, and what he speaks is half in the dry clicking tongue of the long-interred. He covets corpses not for armies but for fuel, dissolving the freshly slain to mend his own ruin. Those who have fled his groves describe a stillness first, then the sound of wood drinking, then the cold creeping in at the ankles. To find his thorns already at your boots is to have arrived too late to leave.
Run Jhask the Defiler in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the ring. Crown of Thorns makes the 10 ft. around Jhask difficult terrain and bites for 2d6 piercing on entry or start of turn there. Make the party pay to reach him.
- Open with Withering Bolt on the enemy healer or caster to shrink its hit point maximum, then Thorn Lash + drag the tank into the thorns.
- Kill-priority is healers. Use Siphon Life to erase their healing and refill your own bar; Defiler's Blight when three or more are clustered.
- When bloodied, Grave Defiance keeps you up on one corpse; go all-in on Defiler's Blight and Creeping Briar to lock the field down.
- Three ways to run him: grindy thorn-tank that punishes every approach; mobile drainer who lashes, drags, and Siphon-Lifes; or a lair-keeper amid risen dead. Thornward taxes anyone who hits him or tries to leave.
Jhask the Defiler
Medium undead, neutral evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINECrown of Thorns. Signature. Jhask is ringed by a writhing thicket of barbed bone-thorns. The 10-foot radius around him is difficult terrain for his enemies, and the first time a creature enters that area on a turn or starts its turn there, it takes 7 (2d6) piercing damage.
Grave Defiance. If damage would reduce Jhask to 0 hit points, he instead drops to 1 hit point if there is an enemy corpse within 30 feet, draining it to dust. Once used, this cannot recur until he finishes a long rest.
Actions
Multiattack. Jhask makes two attacks with his Thorn Lash, or casts one spell and makes one Thorn Lash attack.
Thorn Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be pulled up to 10 feet toward Jhask.
Withering Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6+4) necrotic damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by that amount until it finishes a long rest.
Defiler's Blight (Recharge 5-6). Jhask sows corruption in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on a point within 90 feet. Each creature there makes a DC 14 Constitution save, taking 22 (5d8) necrotic damage and being poisoned until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and no poison on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Thornward (Reaction). When a creature within 15 feet of Jhask hits him with an attack or moves out of his reach, the thorns answer: that creature must make a DC 14 Dexterity save or take 9 (2d8) piercing damage and have its speed reduced to 0 until the start of its next turn.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Lash. Jhask makes one Thorn Lash attack.
Creeping Briar (Costs 2 Actions). Thorns erupt beneath a point Jhask can see within 60 feet. Each creature within 10 feet of that point makes a DC 14 Dexterity save or takes 10 (3d6) piercing damage and is restrained until the start of Jhask's next turn.
Siphon Life (Costs 2 Actions). One creature within 60 feet makes a DC 14 Constitution save, taking 13 (3d8) necrotic damage on a failure. Jhask regains hit points equal to the damage dealt.
A horned cadaver-sorcerer in blackened plate and a trailing grave-shroud, Jhask stands at the heart of a splayed corona of barbed, blood-slick bone that ropes out of the earth like a crown turned weapon.
Jhask the Defiler, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINERooted Vigil (signature). While Jhask the Defiler is within 30 feet of an ally, that ally cannot be moved against its will by enemy effects, and the husk takes 5 less necrotic damage from all sources.
Actions
Bone Rake. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+3) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) necrotic damage.
Reactions
Bramble Shield. When an ally Jhask the Defiler can see within 10 feet is hit by an attack, Jhask the Defiler may interpose its thorns, reducing the damage by 7 (2d6) and taking that much piercing damage itself.
A half-dissolved corpse laced and held upright by living briars, Jhask the Defiler shambles where the thorns pull it, a loyal hedge against those who would harm its keeper.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Withering Bolt on the squishiest caster to chip its hit point maximum, then keep Crown of Thorns between you and melee so they bleed coming in. Save Defiler's Blight for a cluster. Pair him with skeletons or zombies so the party must wade through thorns and bodies both.
Open by lashing the frontliner and dragging it into the thorn ring, then spend legendary actions on Creeping Briar to restrain the rest. Kill-priority is healers; use Siphon Life to undo their work and top yourself off. When bloodied, lean on Grave Defiance and Defiler's Blight to punish anyone bunched up. Thornward makes melee a tax.
Run him as a lair-anchor rather than a lone duel: fill the field with risen dead so Creeping Briar and Siphon Life always have fuel and corpses for Grave Defiance. Open with Defiler's Blight on the densest knot, restrain spellcasters with briar, and let Thornward and Crown of Thorns grind any melee that closes. Pair him with a bigger flagship undead to carry the action economy.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Jhask the Defiler?
Jhask is built as a Challenge Rating 6 boss (2,300 XP) at his native Tier 2, tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Because he carries a real action-economy kit (multiple legendary options plus the Thornward reaction), he is solo-capable and his sheet is dropped one band so he plays up to a true centerpiece fight. Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) versions are provided with the same traits and rescaled numbers.
Can Jhask the Defiler be a companion or ally?
As written he is a malevolent grave-sorcerer and works best as an adversary. If you want him on the party's side, use the included companion, Sere the Thorn-Bound Husk, a scaled-down thorn-bound guardian that shields allies and rakes foes, or reflavor a redeemed Jhask as a reluctant warden of cursed groves bound to repay a debt to the heroes.
How do I keep the thorn ring from slowing my own game down?
Track Crown of Thorns once per creature per turn: 2d6 piercing the first time someone enters the 10 ft. radius or starts its turn inside it, and the area is difficult terrain for his enemies only. Resolve Thornward as a single reaction per round. Pre-roll Defiler's Blight and Withering Bolt damage so saves move fast at the table.
