Agares is the Second Spirit of the Ars Goetia, holding the rank of Duke in the infernal hierarchy. According to the Lesser Key of Solomon, Agares commands 31 legions of inferior spirits and belongs to the order of Dukes. As a Duke, Agares serves within the structured hierarchy beneath the Great Kings of the Goetia.

Appearance

He appeareth in the form of a comely Old Man, riding upon a Crocodile, carrying a Goshawk upon his fist.

Powers & Dominion

He maketh them to run that stand still, and bringeth back runaways. He teacheth all Languages or Tongues presently. He hath power also to destroy Dignities both Spiritual and Temporal, and causeth Earthquakes.

Summoning & Constraints

He is of the Order of Virtues. He must be invoked facing East.

Historical Note

The seal and description of Agares are drawn from the Ars Goetia, the first book of the Lemegeton (Lesser Key of Solomon), a 17th-century grimoire compiled from older Medieval and Renaissance sources. The 72 demons were said to have been conjured and bound by King Solomon using a brass vessel sealed with divine names. Each demon's seal, reproduced above, was used by the conjurer as a means of identification and control during the summoning ritual.
