Abaddon — The Encounter

Chained Destroyer who drags the gates of the abyss · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Abaddon

When the Pit needed a thing to drag its prisoners down and its gates wide open, it forged Abaddon — not a rider's mount but the mount that needs no rider. The grimoires name him the Destroyer, the chained steed whose hooves are said to have trampled the foundations of a thousand fallen cities. Smiths of the lower hells riveted the gate-chains of the abyss directly to his barding; he wears them now as both armor and weapon, and the rattle of their dragging announces him long before his burning eyes crest the ridge. He answers no command but the oldest one: pull. What he is harnessed to, he tears loose. What stands before him, he runs down. Three war hounds once coursed at his flanks, and the pillars he gallops between still bear the runes that bound them. Conjurers who summon Abaddon for his strength learn too late that a thing made to drag does not stop when the target is reached.

Trampling Charge. If Abaddon moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a creature and then hits it with a Hooves attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, Abaddon can make one Bite attack against it as a bonus action.

Dragged Chains. Signature. The abyssal gate-chains bolted to Abaddon's barding sweep a 15-foot radius. The first time a creature enters that area on a turn or starts its turn there, it takes 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage and its speed is halved until the start of its next turn (no save). Difficult terrain costs Abaddon no extra movement, and its chains can shatter mundane barriers it gallops through.

Unstoppable. Abaddon can't be frightened, and difficult terrain doesn't slow its charge.

Actions

Multiattack. Abaddon makes one Hooves attack and one Bite attack, or two Hooves attacks.

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d6 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 17) by Abaddon's chains.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Whip of Chains (Reaction). When a creature within 15 ft. of Abaddon moves away or stands up from prone, Abaddon lashes a chain at it. The creature must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be pulled 10 ft. toward Abaddon and take 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Hooves. Abaddon makes one Hooves attack.

Drag (Costs 2 Actions). Abaddon moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks. Each creature grappled by it or within its chain radius moves with it, taking 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage if pulled across difficult terrain or barriers.

Hellish Bray (Costs 2 Actions). Abaddon brays the dirge of the abyss. Each creature within 30 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the end of its next turn.

A Huge infernal warhorse cased in spiked black barding, ram-horned and burning-eyed, hauling the broken chains of the abyssal gate as it rears over a circle of runed pillars.

Actions

Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 5) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Run It Down. When a creature within 10 ft. stands up from prone, the hound moves up to 10 ft. toward it without provoking opportunity attacks.

One of the three abyssal war hounds that course at Abaddon's flanks, sent ahead to pin what the Destroyer will trample.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP50 (8d10+6) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with a 20-ft. Trampling Charge to knock one PC prone, then Bite to grapple. Kill-priority: anyone who tries to flee the chain radius — use Whip of Chains to yank them back. Pair it with a caster boss; at this tier it is the wall that pins the party in place.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP120 (16d10+32) To-hit+7Save DC15

Charge the cluster so Dragged Chains hits everyone, then Multiattack the grappled target. If PCs spread out, Drag the grappled one back into the pack. Kill-priority: the mobile striker — chain-grapple and slow them so the rest of the threat can land hits.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (17d12+85) To-hit+10Save DC17

Open with a straight charge through the cluster (Dragged Chains + Trampling Charge prone), Bite-grapple the squishiest, then spend legendary actions on Drag to haul them out of healer range. When bloodied, lead each round with Hellish Bray to frighten before stampeding. Kill-priority: whoever is grappled — isolate and crush.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Abaddon?

Native CR 11 (Tier 3, levels 11-15) at AC 18, HP 195, +10 to hit, DC 17. As a solo centerpiece with legendary actions it plays up toward CR 12-13. Scaled-down stat blocks for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 2 (~CR 6) are provided in the tiers array.

Can Abaddon be a companion or ally?

Abaddon is a lawful evil infernal warbeast built as an adversary and boss, not a player ally. If you want a friendlier version, use the Coursing Hound, Bound companion block — a single bound war hound that drags and pins for an allied front-liner.

How do I keep the chain aura from feeling like a static damage tax?

Move it. The aura matters because Abaddon charges through the party every turn and uses Drag to relocate grappled PCs into it. Treat the 15-ft. radius as a moving hazard tied to his line of charge, not a stationary field, and the encounter stays kinetic.
