Azazel — The Encounter

Four-Winged Angel of War, twin glaives drawn · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Azazel

Before kingdoms had names, Azazel walked among men and taught them the craft of war: to fold metal into blades, to set a line, to break a charge. The grimoires count him among the host that fell for loving creation too fiercely, yet his bearing remains that of a captain, not a beast. He carries twin glaives because he refuses to choose between attack and guard, and he fights forward, never yielding ground he has claimed. Where Azazel lands, ranks tighten and the timid stand firm, for terror cannot touch a soldier who marches beside the angel who invented courage. He neither pleads nor parleys. He gives an army its orders in a voice felt rather than heard, and expects the slaughter that follows to be clean, swift, and complete. Those who summon him learn the cost of borrowing a teacher who measures every life by how well it serves the line.

Angelic Weapons. Azazel's glaive attacks are magical. When he hits with either glaive, the attack deals an extra 2d8 radiant damage (included below).

War-Drilled (signature). Azazel taught the first armies how to kill. On a turn he both moves at least 20 ft. and hits a creature, that creature has disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the start of Azazel's next turn. The first time each round an ally Azazel can see hits the same target, that ally deals an extra 1d6 damage.

Actions

Multiattack. Azazel makes two Twin Glaive attacks.

Twin Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d8 + 4 slashing plus 2d8 radiant) damage.

Skyfall Plunge (Recharge 5-6). Azazel flies up to 60 ft. and slams down. Each creature within 10 ft. of his landing point must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d8 + 4) radiant damage and being knocked prone on a failed save, or half damage and not knocked prone on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wingstorm (Reaction). When a creature within 5 ft. hits Azazel with a melee attack, he beats his four wings and flies up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A four-winged warrior in ankh-graven warplate stands astride a coil of cloud, a long bladed glaive locked in each fist. His face is serene; his wings are a wall of bronze feathers.

Banner of Resolve (signature). Allies within 15 ft. of the standard-bearer have advantage on saving throws against being frightened and add 1d4 to their first attack roll each turn.

Actions

Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 3 piercing plus 1d6 radiant) damage.

Reactions

Hold the Line. When an ally within 10 ft. is reduced to 0 hit points, the standard-bearer can have that ally drop to 1 hit point instead. Once it does so, it cannot again until it finishes a long rest.

A small winged herald who raises Azazel's colors and keeps the rank from breaking.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by flying in and making both glaive attacks on the squishiest front-liner, then use War-Drilled to soften their counterattack. If the party clusters, save Skyfall Plunge to knock two or three prone at once. Pair him with archers or a caster boss so allies cash in his bonus damage.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC17HP15d8+60 (127) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with Skyfall Plunge into the tightest cluster, then Multiattack the lowest-AC caster. Kill-priority is healers and controllers; the radiant rider punishes them. He is the elite enforcer beside a bigger flagship boss, so let him dive on a target your boss marks and feed the War-Drilled bonus to your other adds. Wingstorm out the moment a melee bruiser pins him down.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP22d8+110 (209) To-hit+9Save DC17

Open Multiattack on whoever concentrates, then Skyfall Plunge on recharge to scatter the line and reset positioning. Kill-priority stays casters and clerics. Run him as the captain of a flying strike wing: he flies, marks the target with War-Drilled, and his lesser angels pile on the bonus damage. Keep him airborne and use Wingstorm to deny opportunity attacks.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Azazel?

His native build is CR 6 (Tier 2, ~2,300 XP): AC 17, 127 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Scale him down to CR 2 for levels 1-4 or up toward CR 11 for levels 11-15 using the tier table; traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Azazel be a companion or ally?

Yes. As the Angel of War he reads cleanly as a lawful-neutral captain who can be bargained with or summoned. Used as an ally, run him as a forward bodyguard: he dives, marks a target with War-Drilled, and his radiant glaives let your party's strikers pile on bonus damage.

Is Azazel meant to fight the party alone?

No. He is solo_capable=false and has no legendary actions, so a single PC team will action-economy him quickly. Pair him with a flagship boss or a wing of lesser angels and let him be the elite blade rather than the centerpiece.
