Armaros — The Encounter

Six-armed angel who teaches the forbidden art of unmaking magic · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Armaros

Among the Watchers who fell, Armaros is named the Angel of Magick — the one who broke his oath to teach mortals the resolving of enchantments, the undoing of bindings, the counter-word that strangles another's spell in its throat. Where Azazel gave war and Samyaza gave pride, Armaros gave the most dangerous gift: the means to unmake what the heavens had woven. He keeps no army and no crown. He drifts above his summoning-stone, six hands forever shaping lessons for any sorcerer reckless enough to kneel, and the price of each lesson is a fragment of the student's own future. Grimoires warn that Armaros never strikes first; he waits, patient as a tutor, until a foe spends their finest spell — and then he plucks it from the air and feeds. To bargain with him is to learn quickly and pay slowly, and many a court-mage has woken to find the very magic that raised them now answering to a colder master in the dark behind their eyes.

Magick Resistance. Armaros has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Forbidden Tutelage. Signature. When a creature within 30 ft. that Armaros can see casts a spell, Armaros may use its reaction to counter or steal it: the spell fails (as counterspell against a spell of 3rd level or lower), and Armaros regains hit points equal to twice the spell's level. It can use this only once per round.

Actions

Multiattack. Armaros makes two Sigil Lash attacks and casts one of its at-will cantrips.

Sigil Lash. Melee Spell Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6+4) force damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll or saving throw.

Unraveling Bolt (Recharge 5-6). Armaros hurls a mote of dismantling light at a point it can see within 60 ft. Each creature in a 10-ft.-radius sphere must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) force damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails also has one beneficial magical effect on it (player's choice) ended, as dispel magic for 3rd level.

Spellcasting (At-Will). Armaros casts mage hand, minor illusion, or ray of frost (+7 to hit, 60 ft., 7 (2d8) cold damage), requiring no material components.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Misdirecting Step. (Reaction, when hit by an attack) Armaros teleports up to 15 ft. to an unoccupied space it can see and gains resistance to the triggering damage. The attacker must reroll the hit; on a miss the attack fails.

A weightless, six-armed angel hovers above a graven pentacle, its skull-crowned face haloed in writhing flame while its lower body trails away into roots of cold fire. Each hand weaves a different sigil, as though instructing an unseen pupil in the grammar of magic itself.

Echo of the Tutor (signature). Once per turn, when an ally within 30 ft. casts a spell, Armaros can use its reaction to grant that ally +1 to the spell's save DC for that casting.

Actions

Warding Glyph. Ranged Spell Attack: +5 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (3d6+3) radiant damage.

Reactions

Sever Spell. When a hostile creature it can see within 30 ft. casts a spell of 2nd level or lower, Armaros can attempt to end it (DC 13 ability check using your spellcasting modifier; success ends the spell).

A drifting fragment of Armaros's teaching, given shape as a single floating sigil-hand that wards an arcane ally and snuffs lesser spells aimed at them.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Sigil Lash on the party's caster to impose disadvantage, then hover out of melee reach. Save Forbidden Tutelage to swallow the first real spell thrown at it. Kill-priority for the party is closing distance — it has no ground speed and folds fast if pinned. Pair it with a frontline brute that keeps melee busy.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP19d8+38 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by holding its reaction, not attacking — let the party blow a spell, then counter-and-heal with Forbidden Tutelage. Lead Sigil Lash into the enemy caster, save Unraveling Bolt for clustered targets or to strip a key buff. When bloodied, Misdirecting Step away from melee every round. Pair it with a flagship boss (Samyaza or Lucifer) as the anti-magic piece that protects them.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP26d8+104 (221) To-hit+9Save DC17

Treat it as a caster-shutdown turret beside a true boss. Forbidden Tutelage now eats 3rd-level spells whole and heals it hard, so the party must out-action it rather than out-spell it. Open Unraveling Bolt on the densest cluster, then alternate Sigil Lash and Misdirecting Step to stay untouchable. Kill-priority: force it into melee or it never stops eating your magic.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Armaros?

Armaros is CR 6 (2,300 XP) at its native Tier 2, built for parties of levels 5-10. Identical traits scale down to a ~CR 2 version for levels 1-4 and up to a ~CR 11 version for levels 11-15 using the tier table; only the numbers change.

Can Armaros be a companion or ally?

Not directly — he is a fallen Watcher who tutors rather than serves. But the bound fragment of his lessons ("Lesson, Bound") works as an ally piece: AC 14, 74 HP, it boosts an arcane ally's save DC and severs lesser hostile spells aimed at them.

How do I beat an enemy that keeps countering our spells?

Stop feeding it. Forbidden Tutelage triggers once per round and heals Armaros, so lead with weapons, force-multiply with non-spell effects, and save your big spell for a round you can also burst it down. Grounding its hover or pinning it in melee removes its mobility entirely.
