KING PAIMON — The Encounter

Crowned scholar-king who teaches in fire and ceremony · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is KING PAIMON

The seventh seal of the lesser key crowns Paimon a king of the western throne, most obedient of the spirits that knelt to the Morningstar, and commander of two hundred legions of the damned. He is no brute of pit and chain but the scholar-king of the abyss: he teaches the sciences, the arts, and all hidden philosophy, and to those who summon him with proper ceremony and music he reveals the secret architecture of the world. Conjurers are warned to face the north when they call him, for he comes crowned and attended, his retinue announcing him before he speaks. His tutelage is corrupting, for every lesson binds the student a little tighter to his service. He governs the dignities of the earth, confirms titles, and unmakes them; men who would rule beg his blessing and pay for it across lifetimes. Calm, controlled, and devastating, Paimon channels his arcane mastery through quiet flame, ruling not by terror but by the unanswerable certainty of a teacher whose word is law.

Magic Resistance. The king has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Scholar's Decree. Signature. Paimon's voice carries the authority of a teacher who is never questioned. When he casts a spell or uses a ceremonial action, he may name one creature he can see; that creature has disadvantage on the first saving throw it makes against him this turn, as his measured command unmakes its resolve.

Actions

Multiattack. The king makes two Scholar's Flame attacks, or makes one Scholar's Flame attack and casts a spell.

Scholar's Flame. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6 + 4) fire damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be unable to speak or cast spells with verbal components until the end of its next turn.

Ceremony of Compulsion (Recharge 5-6). Paimon raises his sigil-flame and intones a command. Each creature of his choice within 30 ft. must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 21 (6d6) psychic damage and is charmed until the end of its next turn, moving as Paimon directs; on a success, it takes half damage and is not charmed.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Cloak of Ash (Reaction). When a creature the king can see hits him with an attack, he wreathes himself in ceremonial smoke. The attacker has disadvantage on the triggering attack roll, and Paimon may then fly up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A crowned sovereign in trailing robes raises two fingers in cold decree, a tongue of bound sigil-fire cupped in his open palm. He does not raise his voice; the abyss simply obeys.

Heralded Approach (signature). KING PAIMON trumpets Paimon's titles before any parley. Allies within 30 ft. of KING PAIMON have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Intimidation) checks made against creatures who can hear him.

Actions

Brazen Horn. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6 + 3) thunder damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be deafened until the end of its next turn.

Reactions

Fanfare of Warning. When an enemy moves within 10 ft. of Paimon, KING PAIMON sounds an alarm; Paimon may immediately use Cloak of Ash even if his reaction is spent.

A lesser devil chained to perpetual ceremony, KING PAIMON exists only to announce his king and ensure no one approaches the throne unwelcomed.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open at max range with Scholar's Flame to silence the party's caster, then back away with Cloak of Ash. If the party clusters, save Ceremony of Compulsion to turn the frontliner against them. Pair Paimon with a melee devil; he is the control piece, not the wall.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC15HP16d8+48 (120) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by naming the healer with Scholar's Decree and lock down their verbal casting with Scholar's Flame. When the party bunches to pressure him, fire Ceremony of Compulsion to charm the heaviest hitter and walk it into its own allies. Kill-priority for the DM: protect Paimon's line of sight; he is an add-on caster behind a flagship boss, so keep a bruiser between him and the melee.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP22d8+88 (187) To-hit+9Save DC17

Lead with Scholar's Decree on whoever has the strongest save, then Ceremony of Compulsion to seize a striker every recharge. Use Cloak of Ash to reposition out of melee each round and keep flying. As a high-tier add-on he punishes clustered parties hard; pair him with a true legendary boss and let Paimon dictate who fights whom.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is KING PAIMON?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, ~levels 5-10): AC 15, 120 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. The record also provides Tier 1 (CR 2-ish) and Tier 3 (CR 11-ish) stat lines so you can drop him into any party without rebuilding him.

Can KING PAIMON be a companion or ally?

He works far better as an adversary or a dangerous patron than a party member, but yes — as a bound or bargained ally he is a devastating standoff controller who silences enemy casters and charms their heaviest hitter. Treat any alliance as conditional; his tutelage always extracts a price.

Is Paimon meant to fight solo?

No. He is solo_capable=false — an add-on caster designed to support a flagship boss. He has no legendary actions and folds under focused melee, so always screen him with a bruiser or pair him with a larger threat.
