Lucifer — The Encounter

The Morning Star, first to fall and crowned in horn · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Lucifer

Of the first light kindled in the dawn before dawn, none shone as Lucifer, the Morning Star, who stood nearest the throne and bore the brightest crown. Pride was his ruin: he would not bow, and for that the heavens cast him down, his radiance corrupted into the cold green flame that now answers his hand. He is not a beast of the pit but its prince and its first sorrow, lawful and patient, ruling by edict and elegant temptation rather than open slaughter. The horns that crown him are the heavens' brand made glory; the wings he no longer spreads are folded into his very bearing. He speaks softly, and emperors kneel. To bargain with him is to feel the old grief beneath the malice, the memory of a song unmade. Summoners who scribe his sigil are warned: he keeps every word of every pact, and the cost is never named until it is owed.

Magic Resistance. Lucifer has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Light That Was Lost. Signature. Lucifer was the brightest of the host before his fall, and his ruin still burns. The first time each turn Lucifer takes damage, he sheds a pulse of fallen radiance: each creature within 10 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) radiant damage and be blinded until the end of its next turn. When Lucifer is reduced to 0 hit points, he does not die but instead drops to 1 hit point once; the next turn this trait is suppressed.

Actions

Multiattack. Lucifer makes two Serpent Flame attacks, or casts a spell and makes one Serpent Flame attack.

Serpent Flame. Ranged Spell Attack: +9 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8+5) fire damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or the green flame coils around it, dealing 7 (2d6) fire damage at the start of its next turn.

Pride's Edict (Recharge 5-6). Lucifer speaks a word of dominion. Each creature of his choice within 30 ft. must make a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw, taking 33 (6d10) psychic damage and being frightened of Lucifer until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half as much damage and not frightened on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Fallen Grace. Reaction (recharges after a short or long rest): When Lucifer is hit by an attack, he can halve the damage taken and teleport up to 30 ft. to an unoccupied space he can see, trailing green fire.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Serpent Lash. Lucifer makes one Serpent Flame attack.

Morning Light (Costs 2 Actions). Lucifer flares with radiant fire. Each creature within 15 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw or take 14 (4d6) radiant damage.

Whispered Crown (Costs 2 Actions). Lucifer targets one creature he can see within 60 ft. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Charisma saving throw or be charmed until the end of its next turn, regarding Lucifer as a trusted lord.

A white-maned archangel in ruined crimson regalia stands amid molten ruin, golden eyes calm beneath a crown of immense curved horns while twin serpents of green fire uncoil from his open hands.

Coil of Fallen Light (signature). When a creature ends its turn within 5 ft. of the serpent, it takes 5 (1d10) fire damage from the writhing green flame.

Actions

Flame Bite. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) fire damage.

Reactions

Constrict the Striker. When an ally within 30 ft. is hit by a melee attack, the serpent lashes the attacker, who must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be restrained until the end of its next turn.

A length of living green fire summoned from Lucifer's open palm, it guards what its lord values and burns what he disdains.

Guideline numbers — formula-tuned and read from the miniature's design, not yet table-proven. Tell us how it ran in the comments.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP55 (10d8+10) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Serpent Flame on the squishiest caster, then drift up out of melee reach using hover. Save Pride's Edict for the moment two or more PCs cluster. Pair him with weaker imps so the party has to choose between the minions and the boss.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP126 (19d8+38) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Pride's Edict if the front line is bunched, then double Serpent Flame the most exposed target. Use Fallen Grace to peel away the instant a martial closes. Kill-priority is whoever can dispel or counter; he taunts them by name.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (23d8+92) To-hit+9Save DC16

Run him solo: open Pride's Edict on the cluster, then Multiattack the healer. Spend legendary actions on Serpent Lash and Whispered Crown to charm the party's heaviest hitter onto its own side. When bloodied, lean on Light That Was Lost punishing melee and Fallen Grace to reposition.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Lucifer?

As built here his home tier is Tier 3 (levels 11-15), CR 11, balanced as a solo boss whose legendary actions and reaction let him play up. Scale him down using the Tier 1 or Tier 2 columns for lower-level parties; traits and tactics stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage move.

Can Lucifer be a companion or ally?

Not as a controlled pet. He is a prince of Hell who deals only in binding pacts. A party can win his favor or a single owed boon through a bargain, but treat any aid as a contract with a hidden price and an inevitable cost. The Morningfire Serpent companion block is the safer summon for ally use.

Why is Lucifer a devil and not a celestial?

He began as the brightest of the angelic host, which is why his fire still burns radiant, but the render shows the fallen prince after his ruin: infernal regalia, the branded horn-crown, and corrupted green flame. He is statted as a lawful evil devil with leftover radiant traits, not a celestial.
