Mammon
Mammon — The Encounter
Bloated Prince of Greed, enthroned upon his hoard · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Mammon
Among the rebel angels who fell screaming into the Abyss, none clutched the ruin of Heaven so tightly as Mammon. Where his brothers nursed wrath, he nursed want. He gathered the molten slag of the burning host and from it forged the first coin, declaring that all things, even mercy, even souls, carry a price. Now he sits the lowest and heaviest of the Princes of Hell, too vast to rise, too rich to fall. His court is a midden of plundered crowns and the teeth of the damned, and his hunger is a debt that compounds forever. Mortals who barter with him always win the bargain at first, for Mammon is patient as interest; the bill arrives only when there is nothing left to seize but the seeker. To his servants he is generous beyond reason. To everyone else he is the appetite that wears a smile and counts your fingers as you shake his hand.
Run Mammon in Sixty Seconds
- Fight near the gold. Bound to the Hoard hands Mammon 30 temp HP every turn while he sits on 1,000+ gp of treasure, capped at 60. If you place him anywhere else, you have gutted the boss.
- Kill-priority is the hoard, not the demon. Reward players who loot or scatter the pile; the moment it is empty he loses temp HP, his Pull stops recharging, and he falls prone wailing.
- Open with Coin-Storm Vomit on a cluster. The 30-foot cone hits for 28 fire + 14 bludgeoning and turns the floor to difficult treasure-terrain, splitting a bunched party immediately.
- When bloodied, lean on Bribe the Blade and Whispered Avarice. Charm the hardest hitter off its turn and yank ranged PCs into reach so the temp-HP grind tilts in his favor.
- Three ways to run him: greed-trap boss (the hoard is bait, defending it kills the PCs), brutal grapple-and-burn bruiser, or a corrupting tempter who never throws a punch until cornered.
Mammon
Large fiend (devil), lawful evil
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEMagic Resistance. Mammon has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Bound to the Hoard. Signature. While Mammon sits upon a pile of treasure worth 1,000 gp or more, he gains 30 temporary hit points at the start of each of his turns (to a maximum of 60) and his Avaricious Pull recharges automatically. If the hoard is fully looted or scattered, he loses this trait and falls prone with a thunderous wail.
Glutton's Endurance. Mammon has advantage on saving throws against effects that would move him, knock him prone, or reduce his speed to 0.
Actions
Multiattack. Mammon makes two Grasping Claw attacks and uses Avaricious Pull if it is available.
Grasping Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 17) as gold-greedy talons drag it close.
Coin-Storm Vomit (Recharge 5-6). Mammon disgorges a 30-foot cone of molten coins. Each creature in the cone makes a DC 16 Dexterity save, taking 28 (8d6) fire damage and 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. The ground in the cone becomes difficult terrain of loose treasure until the end of Mammon's next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Bribe the Blade. Reaction, when a creature Mammon can see hits him with an attack: Mammon hurls a fistful of cursed gold. The attacker must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or be charmed until the end of its next turn, wasting its remaining attacks scrabbling for the coins instead of striking.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Coin Lash. Mammon makes one Grasping Claw attack.
Hoard Surge (Costs 2 Actions). Treasure boils up around Mammon. Each creature within 15 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Strength save or be knocked prone in the shifting gold and take 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage.
Whispered Avarice. Mammon murmurs a promise of wealth at one creature within 60 feet. That creature must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or use its reaction (if available) to move toward Mammon and the hoard.
A mountain of crimson flesh wedged onto a throne and drowning in his own treasure, Mammon raises a gem-studded ring to gloating eyes while gold spills endlessly from beneath him.
Mammon, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINETreasure-Scent (signature). Mammon has advantage on attacks against any creature carrying 100 gp or more of coin, gems, or magic items, sensing the wealth on them like blood.
Actions
Vault Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d6 + 6) piercing damage, and if the target carries any treasure it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or drop one carried item or coin pouch.
Reactions
Guard the Pile. When a creature within 5 feet of Mammon tries to pick up treasure, Mammon makes a Vault Bite against it.
A gaunt hound of welded coins and snapping vault-doors, loyal only to whoever owns the most gold.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Coin-Storm Vomit to scatter a clustered party, then claw the closest greedy front-liner and grapple it onto the hoard. Kill-priority is anyone trying to loot the treasure pile, since that ends his free temp HP. Pair him with a couple of devil grunts; even shrunk to T1 he plays as a heavy because of his band-drop, so keep the fight near his gold.
Lead with two Grasping Claws to lock a striker in place, save Coin-Storm Vomit for when three or more enemies bunch up. Use Bribe the Blade on the biggest hitter to waste its turn. Kill-priority remains anyone disrupting the hoard; if players ignore the gold he just grinds them down.
Run him as a band-dropped solo boss. Open by grappling a melee PC and Coin-Storm Vomiting the casters, then spend legendary actions on Whispered Avarice to drag ranged characters into the kill zone. When bloodied his Bound to the Hoard temp HP swings the attrition war, so make looting the pile the obvious win-condition and watch the party split.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Mammon?
Mammon is CR 11 (7,200 XP) at his native Tier 3, built as a solo-capable boss. His legendary actions and Bound to the Hoard trait let him play up a band, so he is dropped one step from a CR 13-ish chassis; scale him to CR 2 (Tier 1) or CR 6 (Tier 2) using the tier table.
Can Mammon be a companion or ally?
Not personally; he is a Prince of Hell who treats every alliance as a loan with crushing interest. For a player-side option, use his bound hound Coffer (AC 15, 124 HP), who sniffs out treasure and guards the pile, or have Mammon broker a deal the party will regret.
How do I keep the Bound to the Hoard fight from grinding forever?
Make the hoard interactable: let PCs use actions to loot, scatter, or burn the treasure, reducing its value below 1,000 gp to switch off his temp HP. Telegraph this early so the table understands attacking the gold, not just Mammon, is the path to victory.
