Sathanas — The Encounter

Scarred adversary-prince of the fallen, throned on skulls · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Sathanas

Among the first monarchs to claw free of the Abyss after the great fall, Sathanas bears the war upon his body. Where the archangels' blades found him, the wounds never closed; they hardened instead into the spiked crimson plate he now wears as both armor and accusation. One wing remains the leathered bat-span of the pit, the other the torn and feathered remnant of the angel he once was, kept unhealed so none forget what was taken from him. He is the Adversary in the oldest sense, the lord of opposition, and his hatred is not hot but patient and lawful, meted out in oaths and grudges. The serpentine tails that trail from his throne are the cunning he turned against Heaven, each tipped to seize and not release. Those who treat with him learn that he forgives nothing and forgets less, and that every wound dealt to him is one day repaid with interest drawn from the soul.

Magic Resistance. Sathanas has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Scars of the Rebellion. Signature. Sathanas remembers every wound of the war in Heaven. The first time each round he takes damage, his next melee hit before the end of his next turn deals an extra 9 (2d8) necrotic damage as old hatred reopens. While bloodied (90 hp or fewer), he has advantage on melee attack rolls.

Actions

Multiattack. Sathanas makes three attacks: one with his Jagged Blade, one with his Spiked Flail, and one with his Barbed Tails.

Jagged Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 6) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Spiked Flail. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Barbed Tails. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 16) by one of Sathanas's serpentine tails.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Hellfire Glare (Reaction). When a creature Sathanas can see ends its turn within 30 feet, he can lock eyes with it. The target must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or take 11 (2d10) fire damage and be frightened of Sathanas until the end of its next turn.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Tail Lash. Sathanas makes one Barbed Tails attack.

Beat of the Fallen Wings (Costs 2 Actions). Sathanas beats his great wings. Each creature within 15 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Dexterity save or take 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage and be pushed 10 feet. Sathanas can then fly up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Brand of Hatred (Costs 2 Actions). Sathanas marks one creature he can see within 60 feet. Until the end of his next turn, the first creature to hit that target with a melee attack adds 9 (2d8) necrotic damage to the hit.

A scar-laced rebel prince in spiked crimson plate, one bat wing and one shredded feathered wing spread wide, gripping a jagged sword and a chained spiked flail while a knot of barbed serpentine tails coils from a throne of skulls.

Sworn Lieutenant (signature). While within 30 feet of Sathanas, Sathanas has advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed, and the first time each turn he hits a creature already targeted by Sathanas's Brand of Hatred, he deals an extra 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Actions

Infernal Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.

Reactions

Take the Blow. When Sathanas is hit by an attack while Sathanas is within 5 feet of him, Sathanas can swap places and become the target, taking the damage instead.

A lesser fallen prince chained to his lord's cause, Sathanas throws himself between Sathanas and harm and hunts whoever his master has marked.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP55 (9d10+6) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Hellfire Glare to frighten the front-line, then fly in and lead with the flail to knock down whoever has the highest AC. If two or more heroes cluster, beat the wings to scatter them. Kill-priority: anyone healing. Pairs with gorier minions to screen him.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP130 (15d10+45) To-hit+7Save DC15

Full Multiattack on the party tank, using the tails to grapple a back-line caster and drag them forward. When bloodied, take advantage on melee and brand the squishiest target so an ally finishes them. Kill-priority: concentration casters. Pairs with Belial to bodyguard him.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (17d10+102) To-hit+10Save DC17

Open by flying over the cluster and beating the wings, then Multiattack the marked target while tails pin a second hero. Spend legendary actions on Tail Lash and Brand of Hatred between turns so allies pile on. When bloodied, his hatred sharpens (advantage on melee) and the extra-damage trait stacks fast. Kill-priority: whoever just hurt him.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Sathanas?

Native CR 11 (7,200 XP) for a Tier 3 party of levels 11-15, and he is solo-capable thanks to his legendary actions and Hellfire Glare reaction. Scaled blocks are provided for Tier 1 (~CR 2 feel) and Tier 2 (~CR 6 feel); traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Sathanas be a companion or ally?

He is built as an adversary boss, but a high-level patron, warlock, or infernal-pact campaign could field him as a temporary ally. If so, drop his legendary actions and treat his grudges as a leash: he aids only those who have wronged his enemies, and he keeps a tally.

How do the grappling tails work in play?

His Barbed Tails attack grapples on a hit (escape DC 16), with 15-foot reach so he can seize someone two squares away. Use it to pull a back-line PC into the kill zone, then spend Tail Lash legendary actions to keep them locked while the flail and blade do the work.
