Amaguq
Amaguq — The Encounter
Wolf-trickster shaman who walks between the living and the dead · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Amaguq
Among the Inuit of the long dark, Amaguq is the wolf who is also a trickster — kin to the spirits the shamans bargain with rather than command. The grimoires of the snow-walkers warn that he runs at the head of no single pack but borrows them all, slipping between flesh and frost so that a hunter loses the trail at the very moment the trail seems surest. He is said to test the worthy and rob the careless, leaving the foolish to wander a whiteout that tightens like a snare. Some shamans court him for the dead-speaking gifts he grants, for he treads the thin ice between the living world and the world of departed souls and laughs at how little separates them. He is not cruel by nature, only hungry and capricious, and a clever offering — meat, a riddle, a true name — may turn his howl from a curse into a guide. Spurn him, and the snow itself becomes his teeth.
Run Amaguq in Sixty Seconds
- Open with Howl of the Hungry Dark on the tightest cluster — the frightened condition shuts down their best turn and feeds your wolves temp HP.
- Glue a wolf to him every round: Pack Cunning gives him advantage and Trickster's Step makes the first incoming hit miss, so he plays like a slippery duelist.
- Kill-priority is anyone who pins him — grapplers, ice-wall casters, and silvered/magic weapons that punch through his nonmagical resistance.
- When bloodied, Shifting Pelt into the dire wolf for a heavy bite-and-prone turn, then swap out with Trickster's Step before the retaliation lands.
- Three ways to run him: trickster harasser darting between allies (default), frost skirmisher kiting with cold-slow staff, or a brief dire-wolf bruiser when he must hold a chokepoint.
Amaguq
Medium fey (shapechanger), chaotic neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINETrickster's Step. (Signature.) Amaguq is never quite where he seemed to be. When a creature ends its turn within 30 feet of him, he can use no action to swap places with the nearest wolf or willing ally within 30 feet, leaving a swirl of snow behind. The first attack against him each round that hits has disadvantage if a wolf is within 5 feet of him.
Pack Cunning. Amaguq has advantage on attack rolls against a creature if at least one of his allies is within 5 feet of the creature and that ally isn't incapacitated.
Actions
Multiattack. Amaguq makes two attacks: one with his Bite and one with his Spirit Staff, or two Spirit Staff attacks.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+3) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Spirit Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d8+3) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) cold damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Howl of the Hungry Dark (Recharge 5-6). Amaguq looses a haunting, soul-thieving howl. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) psychic damage and becoming frightened of him until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and not frightened on a success. Allied wolves and fey within 30 feet instead gain 5 temporary hit points.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Shifting Pelt (Bonus Action). Amaguq magically transforms into a Large dire wolf, back into his hybrid form, or assumes the shape of a harmless Small humanoid. His statistics are the same in each form except for size; he reverts to his true form if he drops to 0 hit points.
Cold-Snap Counter (Reaction). When a creature within 30 feet hits Amaguq with a melee attack, he can lash frost across the attacker, dealing 7 (2d6) cold damage.
A wolf-headed spirit crowned with a sunburst mane of feathers and bone-pale horns, draped in scaled hide and clutching a forked spirit-staff, he balances on a crust of cracked tundra ice. His open clawed hand seems to beckon — though no one trusts where the gesture leads.
Amaguq, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEFrost-Bound Loyalty (signature). While within 30 feet of the creature it is bound to, Amaguq has advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed, and ignores difficult terrain made of snow or ice.
Actions
Rimefang Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) cold damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Pack Intercept. When an ally Amaguq can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Amaguq can lunge to take half the damage, dropping the rest onto itself.
A great snow-pale dire wolf that runs ahead of any blizzard, Amaguq answers Amaguq's howls and binds itself to those the trickster judges worthy of a guide.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by softening the party with Howl, then dart in beside a melee ally for Pack Cunning advantage. Keep a wolf glued to him so the first hit each round whiffs. Kill-priority: drop whoever tries to corner him before Trickster's Step swaps him to safety. Pair him with a tougher tundra beast — he is the harasser, not the wall.
Open with Howl of the Hungry Dark on the densest cluster, then Bite-knockdown the frightened front-liner so allies pile on. When melee closes, burn Trickster's Step and Cold-Snap Counter to punish chasers, shifting to dire-wolf form for a brutal turn if cornered. Kill-priority: nuke whatever locks him down. Best run as a skirmishing trickster beside a heavier ice boss (Ahklut or Sedna).
Lead with Howl every recharge to keep the party frightened, then Multiattack the staff to stack cold-slows so no one escapes the kill-box. Swap freely with summoned wolves so the party never lands two hits in a row. Kill-priority: whoever brings silvered or magic weapons — they bypass his resistance. Still an add-on: pair him with a legendary winter boss so the band can't focus him down.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Amaguq?
Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, ~2,300 XP) as a skirmishing trickster spirit. The sheet scales down to a CR 2-ish harasser for levels 1-4 and up to a CR 11-ish whiteout terror for levels 11-15 — same traits and actions, only the numbers move.
Can Amaguq be a companion or ally?
Yes, with caveats. He is chaotic and capricious, so he makes a fickle patron rather than a steadfast ally — best won over with an offering, a riddle, or a true name. His bound dire wolf, Tikaani the White Runner, is the more reliable companion and gladly guides those Amaguq deems worthy.
Is Amaguq a solo boss?
No. He has no legendary actions and is built to harass, not anchor a fight. Run him as an add-on beside a heavier centerpiece like Ahklut or Sedna; alone, a focused party will pin him down before his tricks pay off.
