Ammut — The Encounter

Devourer of the Dead, crocodile-jawed eater of unworthy souls · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Ammut

In the Hall of Two Truths the heart of every dead soul is weighed against the feather of Ma'at, and those found heavy with sin are cast down to her. Ammut waits beneath the scales: part crocodile, part lion, part river-beast, bound in the linen of the graves she has emptied. She does not kill for hunger but for verdict, and to be eaten by Ammut is the second death, the death that admits no resurrection, no name spoken in the afterlife, no return. The bandages she wears are stripped from those she has already swallowed, and the gold upon her is the funeral wealth of kings who failed their reckoning. Sorcerers who would cheat judgment sometimes call her up to devour a rival's soul outright, but the Devourer keeps no master long; she weighs the conjurer too, and finds them wanting, and feeds.

Eater of Hearts. When Ammut reduces a creature to 0 hit points with a melee attack, it may devour that creature's heart as part of the same attack. Ammut regains 10 hit points and, until the end of its next turn, its bite deals an extra 7 (2d6) necrotic damage. A creature whose heart is devoured cannot be restored to life by anything short of a wish spell.

Weight of Judgment. Ammut has advantage on melee attack rolls against any creature that is frightened or that has used a feature to deal damage since the start of Ammut's last turn.

Actions

Multiattack. Ammut makes one Khopesh attack and one Devouring Bite attack.

Khopesh. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8+4) slashing damage. On a hit, the target cannot regain hit points until the start of Ammut's next turn.

Devouring Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Maw of Terror (Recharge 5-6). As a bonus action, Ammut unhinges its crocodilian jaws and roars. Each creature within 15 ft. must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of Ammut until the end of its next turn.

A bandage-wrapped horror with the gaping crocodile jaws of a Nile devourer, gilded collar and greaves gleaming as it raises a great curved khopesh to harvest the unworthy.

Scent of Guilt (signature). Ammut has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) and Wisdom (Survival) checks to find a creature that has killed within the last day, and knows the precise direction to it within 1 mile.

Actions

Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14) if it is Medium or smaller.

Reactions

Drag to Judgment. When a creature Ammut has grappled tries to move away, Ammut may pull it 5 ft. toward Ammut instead.

A gaunt jackal-headed hound that pads beside the Devourer, dragging the condemned within reach of her jaws.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Maw of Terror to scatter the party, then close on whoever broke from cover. Kill-priority is anyone already wounded so Eater of Hearts heals her back up. Run her as a relentless executioner alongside a caster who keeps the front line frightened.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open Maw of Terror, then Multiattack the most frightened target to cash in Weight of Judgment's advantage. Drive her at the squishiest PC so a 0-hp drop triggers a heart-devour heal and a buffed bite. Pair her with a bigger Egyptian boss (a mummy lord or a divine avatar) and let Ammut be the dedicated soul-eater striker.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC16

Lead with Maw of Terror to lock down clustered targets, then full Multiattack the lowest-HP frightened PC to chain heart-devours. The no-healing rider on Khopesh shuts off the party healer's recovery, so prioritize whoever is keeping the group standing. Use her as the elite enforcer beside a true legendary boss, never solo at this tier.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Ammut?

Native CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier 2 striker built for parties of level 5-10. Stat blocks for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) are provided so you can scale her to your table.

Can Ammut be a companion or ally?

Not really — she is a neutral evil devourer who weighs and eats all souls, including her summoner's, so she makes a treacherous temporary tool at best. Her jackal hound Khenti, however, works as a tracking companion for a darker party.

What makes a fight with Ammut feel different?

She punishes the wounded. Her Eater of Hearts heal-on-kill and the permanent no-resurrection rider mean players feel real dread when a teammate drops near her, and her Khopesh's anti-healing makes the cleric's job genuinely harder.
