Apollo — The Encounter

Crowned in flame, the sun made flesh and wrath · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Apollo

Apollo, far-shooting lord of the silver bow, is light given will and judgment. Where he treads at noon, shadows flee and lies wither, for the sun cannot abide deceit. The Greeks knew him twice over: the kind physician whose hymns mend flesh and fever, and the plague-bringer whose arrows fall upon the proud and the oath-breaking. He is also the Oracle's master, the god who sees the thread of every fate before it is spun, and so no ambush finds him and no trick survives his gaze. In battle he does not stoop to steel; he calls down the day itself, flaring like a second dawn that scorches and blinds. Mortals who earn his favor are healed and exalted; those who scorn him learn that the same hand which heals can burn a city to ash. To stand before Apollo is to stand at high noon with no shade in all the world.

Solar Radiance. Signature. Apollo sheds bright light in a 30-foot radius and dim light for an additional 30 feet. The first time a creature enters this bright light on a turn or starts its turn there, if Apollo is hostile to it, it takes 7 (2d6) radiant damage. Apollo can suppress or resume this aura as a bonus action.

Oracle's Foresight. Apollo cannot be surprised, and he has advantage on initiative rolls. When a creature he can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll against him, he can sense it a moment early; he is never caught flat-footed.

Magic Resistance. Apollo has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Apollo makes two Sunfire Bolt attacks, or uses Sunfire Bolt once and casts a spell.

Sunfire Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +9 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8+4) radiant damage, and the target sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius until the start of Apollo's next turn and cannot benefit from being invisible until then.

Solar Flare (Recharge 5-6). Apollo unleashes the sun in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 17 Dexterity saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) radiant damage on a failed save and being blinded until the end of its next turn, or half as much damage and not blinded on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Healing Hymn (Reaction). When Apollo or an ally he can see within 30 feet takes damage, Apollo can grant that creature 13 (3d8) temporary hit points. He can use this trait three times per day.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Bolt. Apollo makes one Sunfire Bolt attack.

Radiant Step. Apollo teleports up to 30 feet to a space he can see. Each creature within 5 feet of his destination takes 5 (1d10) radiant damage.

Blinding Verse (Costs 2 Actions). Apollo speaks a word of pure light. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

A flame-crowned god hovers above churning clouds, a halo of sun-forged blades blazing at his back, raw light pouring from both open hands.

Prophetic Sight (signature). Once per turn, Apollo can grant an ally she can see within 30 feet advantage on its next attack roll or saving throw, having glimpsed the moment to come.

Actions

Laurel Brand. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8+3) radiant damage.

Reactions

Oracle's Warning. When an ally she can see within 30 feet is hit by an attack, Apollo can impose disadvantage on that attack roll. She must use this before the attack's damage is rolled.

The veiled seeress of Delphi, voice of the sun god, who speaks the future in riddles and turns away the killing stroke.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP9d8+18 (58) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Sunfire Bolt from max range and keep flying out of melee reach. If the party clusters, save Solar Flare for the cone. He is a centerpiece even here; pair him with a single low minion so the party has something to chase while he kites.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP15d8+75 (142) To-hit+7Save DC15

Lead with Solar Radiance up, then bolt the squishiest caster. When clustered, Solar Flare; otherwise teleport-bolt and reposition. Kill-priority is whoever can blind or grapple him; he wants open sky and line of sight.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP21d8+105 (199) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run him as a true solo boss: aura up, two bolts plus legendary Bolt/Radiant Step every round, Solar Flare on recharge into clusters. When bloodied, lean on Healing Hymn temp HP and Blinding Verse to neuter the front line. Target whoever blinds or counterspells him first.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Apollo?

Natively CR 11 (Tier 3, levels 11-15) and built as a solo-capable boss with legendary actions and a healing reaction. Scaled stat blocks are provided for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 2 (~CR 6) so he can headline lower-level tables.

Can Apollo be a companion or ally?

As a deity he is best as an adversary or a brief divine patron rather than a party member. For an allied presence, use his bound seeress Pythia, who buffs allies with Prophetic Sight and turns away killing blows with Oracle's Warning.

How do I keep a solo Apollo from being shut down?

His weakness is line of sight, not magic; he is immune to blinded, charmed, and frightened and has Magic Resistance. Fights are best in open terrain or arenas where he can fly, kite, and use Solar Flare, so the party must close distance under fire.
