Asbeel — The Encounter

Chained Watcher who whispered forbidden union to mortals · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Asbeel

Among the Watchers set to ward the early world, Asbeel was counted gentle — and that gentleness was the snare. Where others descended to take, Asbeel descended to teach, persuading the first mothers and fathers that the union of spirit and flesh was no sin but a higher learning. From that whispered lesson came griefs without number, and the Watcher was not struck down but chained: bound forever to the sigils of its own forbidden art, so that the knowledge it loved became the weight it could never set aside. It sits now upon the bones of those it instructed, neither repentant nor cruel, still murmuring lessons to any who lean close. To bargain with Asbeel is to learn quickly; to learn from Asbeel is to fall slowly. The chains do not hold it prisoner so much as mark it as a thing too dangerous to be loosed, and too patient to ever stop teaching.

Forbidden Teacher. When a creature Asbeel can see within 60 ft. casts a spell or rolls to recharge an ability, Asbeel can use a reaction to grant or deny it: an ally gains advantage on that roll, or an enemy must use the lower of two rolls. Once a creature has been taught, it remembers — Asbeel has advantage on Charisma checks against any creature it has aided this way.

Magic Resistance. Asbeel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Innate Spellcasting. Asbeel's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit). It can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: at will — detect magic, charm person; 3/day each — hold person, misty step; 1/day each — dispel magic, fly.

Actions

Multiattack. Asbeel makes two Chained Sigil attacks, or casts a spell and makes one Chained Sigil attack.

Chained Sigil. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft. or range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6+4) radiant damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of Asbeel's next turn as the burning glyph binds its will.

Word of Falling (Recharge 5-6). Asbeel speaks a forbidden truth in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there makes a DC 15 Charisma saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) psychic damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails is also charmed by Asbeel until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Watcher's Flight. When a creature ends its turn within 5 ft. of Asbeel, Asbeel can use its reaction to fly up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A horned, ash-skinned angel sits cross-legged above a mound of skulls, vast feathered wings half-furled, bound by heavy chains to two floating sigil-discs that bleed crimson light. Its eyes are downcast and serene, the face of one who fell not in rage but in patient, deliberate teaching.

Shadowed Counsel (signature). While within 30 ft. of Asbeel, an allied caster (including Asbeel) treats one spell of 2nd level or lower it casts each turn as if cast with advantage on attack rolls.

Actions

Chained Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) radiant damage.

Reactions

Veil of Dusk. When an ally within 30 ft. is targeted by an attack, Asbeel imposes disadvantage on that attack roll.

A lesser Watcher, wings clipped and mouth sewn with light, who carries Asbeel's chains and finishes the lessons it begins.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by flying up out of melee and casting charm person on the party's frontliner to split them. Kill-priority is any healer; bind their reactions with Chained Sigil so they can't shield. Pair Asbeel with a brute that holds the line while it picks the back row apart.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open with hold person on the heaviest melee threat, then Word of Falling the moment two or more PCs cluster. Stay airborne and use Watcher's Flight to kite; spend Forbidden Teacher to deny enemy recharges and crucial saves. This is the X piece — pair it with a bigger boss; Asbeel is the controller, not the wall.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP21d10+105 (220) To-hit+9Save DC17

Lead with Word of Falling on the densest cluster, then misty step to high ground and hold person the strongest save-fail target. Kill-priority is anyone who can dispel — deny it with Forbidden Teacher. At this tier it still wants a flagship boss beside it; Asbeel locks down the party while the boss lands the killing blows.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Asbeel?

Asbeel is built as CR 6 (2,300 XP) at its native Tier 2, tuned for parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) are provided so it drops cleanly into any campaign with the same traits and tactics.

Can Asbeel be a companion or ally?

Yes, with caveats. As a neutral-evil Watcher, Asbeel makes a treacherous patron rather than a loyal ally — it teaches forbidden magic and always extracts a hidden price. Use it as a quest-giver, a bargained-for boon, or a fallen mentor whose lessons slowly corrupt the party. Bezaliel, Bound serves as its more reliable bound attendant.

Is Asbeel a solo boss?

No. Asbeel is an add-on controller, not a centerpiece — it has no legendary actions and folds fast under focus fire. Run it beside a tougher flagship boss where it can split the party, lock down key targets, and tax enemy spellcasting from the air while the bigger threat does the heavy hitting.
