Athena
Athena — The Encounter
Grey-eyed strategist whose spear ends every battle she predicts · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Athena
Of the seventy-two who plead and the dead gods who slept, none was born as Athena was: full-grown and armored from the splitting of a god's own skull, screaming a war-cry before she drew first breath. She is not the rage of battle but its arithmetic. Where lesser powers covet, she calculates; where they strike, she has already chosen the ground, the hour, and the wound. Mortals who built her temples did so not from love but from a wiser fear, for she rewards the prepared and abandons the proud at the exact instant their hubris outruns their planning. Her great owl is no pet but an extension of her sight, carrying her gaze across a battlefield she will win before the first blade falls. To face Athena is to learn that the contest was decided in the moment you announced your intention. She offers terms only to the clever, and mercy only to those who have already surrendered to reason.
Run Athena in Sixty Seconds
- She acts twice. Athena has legendary actions plus a strong reaction, so never let her turn end quietly: spend Spear Jab or Read the Field on someone else's turn every round.
- Open with positioning, not damage. Owl's Eyes her into the backline first turn, then Multiattack the caster or healer. She wins by removing the brain of the party, not by trading hits.
- Aegis Flare is your cluster-punish. Hold the recharge cone until three or more PCs stand within 30 ft.; the blind shuts down their next round of melee.
- When bloodied (97 HP), go evasive. Lean on Tactical Withdraw and her foresight disadvantage trait, kiting at 40 ft. while Glaukopis interposes wings. She does not brawl when losing.
- Three ways to run her: lone duel boss with the owl as her only ally; warlord leading SRD cultists where she buffs their attacks with Read the Field; or grey-eyed mentor who tests the party non-lethally and yields if outthought.
Athena
Medium celestial (demigod), lawful good
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEStrategist's Foresight. Signature. Athena cannot be surprised and has advantage on initiative. When a creature she can see attacks her, she may have already read the strike: the first attack against her each round has disadvantage.
Magic Resistance. Athena has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Divine Weapons. Her spear attacks are magical and deal an extra 9 (2d8) radiant damage (included below).
Actions
Multiattack. Athena makes two attacks with her Spear of Doru.
Spear of Doru. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage.
Aegis Flare (Recharge 5-6). Athena raises her shield and unleashes blinding daylight in a 30-foot cone. Each creature there makes a DC 16 Constitution save, taking 36 (8d8) radiant damage and being blinded until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and no blindness on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Tactical Withdraw. Reaction. When a creature within 5 feet hits Athena with a melee attack, she steps 10 feet away without provoking opportunity attacks and the triggering attacker grants advantage to the next attack made against it before her next turn.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Spear Jab. Athena makes one Spear of Doru attack.
Read the Field (Costs 2 Actions). Athena names one creature she can see; until the end of her next turn, she and her allies have advantage on attack rolls against that creature.
Owl's Eyes. Athena moves up to her speed without provoking opportunity attacks and may make a Perception check; until her next turn she ignores half and three-quarters cover when attacking.
A tall, hard-eyed goddess in scaled aegis stands spear-set before a colossal horned owl, her round shield braced and her cloak snapping in a wind only she seems to feel.
Athena, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEAll-Seeing Watch (signature). Athena has advantage on Perception checks relying on sight and grants the creature it guards advantage on initiative rolls while within 30 feet.
Actions
Rending Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6+6) slashing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 15) if Medium or smaller.
Reactions
Sheltering Wing. Reaction. When an ally within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Athena interposes a wing, reducing that damage by 10 (3d6).
A horned owl the size of a warhorse, its feathered crest curling like a crown, watching everything with twin lamps of patient gold.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Run her as a wandering champion the party shouldn't fight head-on. Open with Aegis Flare to blind clustered low-level PCs, then jab the spell-caster. If overwhelmed, use Tactical Withdraw to peel away and let her owl screen her.
Open by naming the party's heaviest hitter with Read the Field, then focus the squishiest target with Multiattack. Save Aegis Flare for when two or more PCs bunch up. Pair her with cultists or constructs so legendary actions keep her acting while adds tie up the front line.
She is the centerpiece boss. Open with Owl's Eyes to reposition into the spellcaster's flank, then Multiattack and spend legendaries on Read the Field every round. Kill-priority is the party healer; use Aegis Flare the moment three PCs cluster, and let Glaukopis grapple the melee bruiser away from her.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Athena?
Her native tier is 3 (levels 11-15), statted at CR 11, 7,200 XP. Because she is solo_capable with legendary actions, her sheet sits one band lower than a non-legendary T3 add would: AC 18, HP 195, +9 to hit, save DC 16. Drop to the tier-2 or tier-1 lines for lower-level tables.
Can Athena be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a lawful good demigod of strategy she makes a powerful patron or temporary ally. Run her buffing the party with Read the Field and Owl's Eyes rather than attacking, and lend Glaukopis as a scout. Just keep her foresight in play so she always seems three moves ahead.
What is the giant owl for?
Glaukopis is Athena's bound companion (AC 14, HP 95), not a separate encounter. It grapples a melee threat away from her, shields allies with Sheltering Wing, and grants her advantage on initiative. Field it beside her or, on a budget, drop it and add 1 to her save DC.
