Babi
Babi — The Encounter
Baboon-headed devourer who guards the underworld's gate · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Babi
Where the river of the dead narrows to a single black gate, Babi keeps watch. The grimoires of the Two Lands name him eldest of the baboons, lord of the slaughter that follows weighed hearts: when a soul is found wanting on the great scales, it is Babi who devours it, swallowing the unworthy whole. He is appetite given armor, his bowels said to be the bolt that bars the gate of heaven, his phallus the mast of the ferry that carries the just across. Hunters and the bereaved alike whisper his name, for he protects against snakes and the terrors of the night, yet turns that same ferocity on any who approach the threshold unbidden. He does not hunt for hate but for hunger, and hunger does not negotiate. To meet Babi in the dark is to learn what your own fear tastes like, an instant before his jaws close.
Run Babi in Sixty Seconds
- What he is: a frightening shield-and-spear bruiser built to anchor a line and protect a bigger boss, not to solo a party.
- Open with the 10-foot spear and Bestial Menace, so the front rank starts frightened and Babi gets advantage and self-heals off Devourer of Souls.
- Kill-priority: always swing at frightened or prone targets first, then bash-and-prone the next would-be flanker; deny PCs a clean melee.
- When bloodied, he goes berserk on the weakest standing PC, spending Guarding Aegis only to keep his own boss alive, not himself.
- Three ways to run him: lone gate-guardian mini-boss (T1), boss bodyguard who eats fear (T2), or a shield-wall honor guard in trios (T3).
Babi
Medium fiend (shapechanger), chaotic evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEDevourer of Souls. Signature. Babi feeds on fear. The first time each turn that Babi reduces a creature to 0 hit points or hits a frightened target, he regains 10 hit points and the round of bloodlust steadies his next strike (advantage on his next attack this turn).
Bestial Menace. Any non-fiend creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of Babi must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened until the start of its next turn. A creature that succeeds is immune to this trait for 24 hours.
Actions
Multiattack. Babi makes two attacks: one with his spear and one with his shield bash, or two with his spear if a target is beyond reach.
Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8+4 plus 1d6) piercing and necrotic damage; the wound bleeds for 1d6 necrotic at the start of the target's next turn (no save if the target is frightened).
Shield Bash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Guarding Aegis (Reaction). When a creature Babi can see hits an ally within 5 feet with an attack, Babi interposes his great round shield, granting the ally +3 AC against that attack. If this causes the attack to miss, Babi may make a shield bash against the attacker if it is within reach.
A towering baboon-headed warden in gilded Nile armor, one fist clenched on a long bronze spear, the other braced behind a sun-bright round shield, jaws parted in a perpetual snarl.
Babi, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEPack Terror (signature). While the Hound is within 10 feet of an ally, that ally has advantage on attacks against any creature that is frightened or prone.
Actions
Rending Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 13) if it is Medium or smaller.
Reactions
Drag Down. When the Hound's grappled target tries to move away, the Hound may use its reaction to make the creature fall prone if it fails a DC 13 Strength save.
A gaunt black war-hound chained to the threshold, eyes like coals, fed only on the fear of those who flee.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with the spear from 10 feet so melee can't close cleanly, then bash and prone the first PC to step inside. Kill-priority is anyone already frightened by Bestial Menace. Pair him with a caster or a bigger fiend; alone he is a brutal mini-boss for a four-person party.
This is the gate-guard piece, not the flagship. Plant him beside your boss, let Guarding Aegis tank hits for the spellcaster, and use Multiattack to prone-then-bleed whoever tries to flank. Hunt frightened targets first so Devourer of Souls keeps healing him; pull casters out of the Bestial Menace aura before they're locked down.
Field two or three as an elite honor guard for a deity-tier boss, forming a shield wall with overlapping Guarding Aegis reactions. Open by frightening the front line, then converge bites and spears on the most isolated PC. Kill-priority: whoever can remove the frightened condition (cleric, paladin).

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Babi?
Babi is built as CR 6 (XP 2,300) at his native Tier 2, a Levels 5-10 add-on threat. The stat block also scales down to roughly CR 2 for Tier 1 (Levels 1-4) and up to roughly CR 11 for Tier 3 (Levels 11-15); traits stay identical, only AC, HP, to-hit, and DC move.
Can Babi be a companion or ally?
Babi himself is an adversary, but the model ships with a bound ally, the Sentinel Hound of the Gate (AC 14, 71 HP), a frightener-and-grappler that gives advantage against prone or frightened foes. Use it as a player-aligned guardian or as Babi's own pack beast.
Is Babi a solo boss?
No. Babi is solo_capable=false: he has no legendary actions and is designed as an add-on, the gate-guard or bodyguard piece beside a larger flagship. He keeps his native-tier numbers with no band-drop, so pair him with a stronger centerpiece for a full encounter.
