Bagiennik — The Encounter

Scalding swamp-imp of the Slavic bog · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Bagiennik

In the Slavic Mythos the bagiennik is a spirit of the bog, neither wholly beast nor wholly fey, born where rotting reed meets black water. It dwells in the deepest fens, glimpsed only as a ripple and a pair of luminous eyes, and it weeps a scalding, oily slime that can scald a careless hand to the bone or, smeared upon a festering wound, draw out disease and rot. For this the marsh-folk leave it offerings of bread and salt at the water's edge, and curse the fool who spits in its mire. Spiteful and territorial, a bagiennik will blind a trespasser with a gout of boiling spittle, then vanish beneath the muck to circle and strike again. They gather in mucky bands beneath a standard of swamp-rag and bone, harrying travelers who stray from the causeway until the fen itself seems to rise against them.

Amphibious. The bagiennik can breathe air and water, and is never slowed by mud, muck, or shallow swamp water.

Scalding Secretion. Signature. The bagiennik's hide weeps a near-boiling oily slime. The first time each turn a creature hits it with a melee attack from within 5 ft., that creature takes 3 (1d6) fire damage. The same slime, smeared on a wound, can cure disease, which is why bog-folk both fear and seek the creature out.

Actions

Multiattack. The bagiennik makes two attacks: one with its Rusted Knife and one with its Scalding Spit.

Rusted Knife. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d6+3) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) poison damage.

Scalding Spit. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 30 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8+3) fire damage, and a creature hit must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Bog Slip. When a creature ends its turn within 5 ft. of the bagiennik while it stands in mud or water, the bagiennik can use its reaction to move up to half its swim speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A hunched, frog-eyed swamp-imp the size of a child, its scaled hide glistening with steaming slime as it clutches a rusted knife and a tattered marsh-standard.

Healing Balm (signature). As an action, Bagiennik smears her slime on an ally she can touch, ending one disease or the poisoned condition on that creature and restoring 5 (1d6+2) hit points. She can do this 3 times per long rest.

Actions

Rusted Knife. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6+2) piercing damage plus 2 (1d4) poison damage.

Reactions

Scald the Striker. When a creature within 5 ft. hits Bagiennik, she can use her reaction to deal 3 (1d6) fire damage to it.

A bog-imp who chose the party's hearth over the lonely fen, paying her keep in disease-cures and ambush craft.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · NATIVE
AC14HP45 (10d6+10) To-hit+5Save DC12

Open from cover with Scalding Spit to blind the squishiest caster, then dart into mud and use Bog Slip to reposition. Kill-priority is whoever tries to grapple it in melee, since Scalding Secretion punishes them automatically. Pair a 2-3 bagienniks with a bigger swamp threat (a Leshy or Vukodlak); they are the harassing chip-pieces, not the main event.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP115 (18d8+36) To-hit+6Save DC14

Run a pack of four as skirmishers in front of a flagship boss. Lead with spit to blind, knife the blinded target, then Bog Slip away before opportunity attacks land. Focus fire whoever lacks fire resistance.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP190 (20d10+80) To-hit+8Save DC16

At this tier the bagiennik is a fen-elder leading lesser kin. Use it as an elite add to a Slavic boss: it blinds the front line, scalds grapplers, and vanishes into the muck on its reaction. Kill it last unless your party can negate its fire damage.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Bagiennik?

Its home statline is CR 2 (450 XP), a Tier 1 add-on built to harass parties of levels 1-4. Scaled blocks for Tier 2 (levels 5-10) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) are provided so it stays relevant beside bigger Slavic threats.

Can Bagiennik be a companion or ally?

Yes. The companion block 'Mokrina, Bound' is a tamer bog-imp who pays her keep in disease-cures and healing balm, plus a knife and a scalding reaction. She fits a swamp-born ranger, druid, or anyone who spared her in the fen.

Is its slime good or bad?

Both. Raw it scalds like boiling oil (its fire damage), but smeared on a wound it cures disease and the poisoned condition. That duality is why marsh-folk leave offerings rather than hunt it.
