Bangputys
Bangputys — The Encounter
Baltic sea-god who whips waves into drowning fury · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Bangputys
Where the Baltic grinds grey and cold against the shore, sailors learn early to name no name louder than Bangputys, lord of the ninth wave. The grimoires of the amber coast hold that nine brothers rule the sea, and that he is the eldest and the cruelest, the one who lifts the killing swell while his kin merely ripple. Fishermen cast the first cup of every catch overboard to him, for an unfed wave takes the boat instead of the bait. He is no devil for all his wings; the old tongues count him among the storm-spirits, neither kind nor wicked, only vast and tidal in his moods. They say he flies on membranes stretched from squall-cloud and keeps a fish ever at his heel, a herald that leaps before the breaker so the wise may yet reach harbor. To meet him in the deep is to bargain with the weather itself, and the weather seldom bargains fair.
Run Bangputys in Sixty Seconds
- Fight near water. Bangputys swims and flies 60 ft. and ignores water difficult terrain; on dry ground he is half the threat, so the encounter belongs on a deck, a reef, or a flooded hall.
- Open with Crashing Surge. The 30-ft. line is his alpha strike: 8d6 plus prone on the densest part of the party. Recharge it and fire it again the instant 5-6 comes up.
- Storm Wake punishes clustering. Anyone ending near him at the start of his turn is shoved and slowed. Melee parties must commit to re-closing every round or whiff their attacks.
- Kill-priority is the healer. Riptide Drag yanks a backline caster 15 ft. into reach, then Multiattack and legendary Trident Jabs finish the job before they recover.
- Three ways to run him: grim god of drowning (no parley, only sacrifice), capricious storm-spirit (let the party bargain mid-fight), or a wrathful guardian who relents once the Surf-Herald is spared.
Bangputys
Large celestial, chaotic neutral
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEAmphibious. Bangputys can breathe air and water, and suffers no movement penalty for fighting in or under the waves.
Storm Wake (signature). Bangputys is wreathed in a churning gale of spray and brine. At the start of each of his turns, each creature within 10 ft. of him must succeed on a DC 16 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 ft. away and have its speed halved until the end of its next turn. Difficult terrain caused by water, mud, or sand never costs him extra movement.
Magic Weapons. Bangputys's weapon attacks are magical.
Actions
Multiattack. Bangputys makes two Trident attacks and uses Crashing Surge if it is available.
Trident. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 6) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) lightning damage.
Crashing Surge (Recharge 5-6). Bangputys hurls a wall of seawater in a 30-foot line that is 5 ft. wide. Each creature in the line must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 28 (8d6) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failed save, or half as much damage and remaining standing on a success.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Riptide Drag (reaction). When a creature within 30 ft. that Bangputys can see hits him with a melee attack, he may pull that creature up to 15 ft. straight toward him.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Trident Jab. Bangputys makes one Trident attack.
Tide Step (Costs 1 Action). Bangputys swims or flies up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Thunderclap (Costs 2 Actions). Bangputys claps the waves together. Each creature within 15 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution saving throw or take 13 (3d8) thunder damage and be deafened until the end of its next turn.
A crowned, sea-bearded god rears on a storm-lashed rock, bat-winged and scale-legged, leveling a triple-pronged trident while a leaping fish breaks the spray beside him.
Bangputys, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEWave-Reader (signature). While the Bangputys is within 30 ft. of an ally, that ally has advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects that originate in or move through water.
Actions
Battering Leap. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Spray Screen. When an ally within 15 ft. is targeted by a ranged attack, the Bangputys bursts into spray, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll.
The great leaping fish that breaks before every wave Bangputys raises, a living warning to those quick enough to read it.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Crashing Surge to scatter the clustered party, then jab the prone with the trident. Keep Storm Wake pushing melee away so the heroes spend turns re-closing. Pair him with a couple of brine-thralls so a level-3 group cannot simply dogpile the god.
Lead with Crashing Surge on the tightest knot, then Multiattack the squishiest body it can reach. Use Riptide Drag to yank a fleeing caster back into Storm Wake range. He flies and swims, so fight near water and reposition every round rather than trading blows in melee.
Solo boss: open by flying to a watery vantage, recharge Crashing Surge on the cluster, and spend legendary actions on Trident Jabs and Tide Step to never be pinned. Kill-priority any healer with Riptide Drag plus Multiattack. When bloodied, dump Thunderclap to deafen and prone the front line before retreating into the deep.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Bangputys?
His native build is CR 11 (7,200 XP), tuned for an 11th-15th level party. As a solo_capable boss with legendary actions and a reaction, he drops one band so three to five players of that tier get a real centerpiece fight. Scaled-down CR 2 and CR 6 versions are provided in the tiers block for lower-level tables.
Can Bangputys be a companion or ally?
He is built as an adversary and solo boss, but a chaotic-neutral sea-god is easily turned ally by oath, tribute, or shared enemy. If the party earns his favor, run him as an NPC patron who calls storms from offscreen rather than fighting beside them. The Surf-Herald fish makes a cleaner ride-along companion using the companion stat block.
Is Bangputys a fiend because of the wings?
No. The bat-like wings are storm-spirit imagery, not infernal heritage. He is statted as a Large celestial (a primordial storm-god) with lightning and thunder immunity, so effects that target fiends, such as a paladin's divine smite bonus dice or banishment-of-fiends, do not key off him.
