Beatrice — The Encounter

Crowned bride of Hell, throned upon the damned · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Beatrice

Where the poet's guide once descended to lift him toward grace, this Beatrice was unmade by the Inferno and remade into its bride. Hell took the name that meant she who blesses and pressed it into a crown of horn and barbed iron, so that her every word now damns rather than redeems. She does not wage war; she invites. Sinners climb the slope of writhing flesh she calls a throne believing they ascend toward her favor, and she lets them — for the mound beneath her is made of all who came before, and her clutching court drags the next supplicant down to swell it. Her gauntlets weep cinders; her gaze rewrites longing into obedience. To strike her is to feel the dead grasp your ankles, and to flee is to find her beauty pulling you back. She is the lie that paradise can be reached by craving alone, given claws and a smile.

Magic Resistance. Beatrice has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Throne of the Damned. Signature. Beatrice stands atop a writhing mound of the damned. While she is within 10 ft. of the mound, she has half cover, and at the start of each of her turns one grasping hand erupts from it: each creature within 10 ft. of her must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or be grappled (escape DC 17) by a clutching arm of the dead. She can have only one creature grappled this way at a time.

Hellish Allure. When a creature that can see Beatrice starts its turn within 30 ft. of her, she can force it to make a DC 17 Wisdom save if she isn't incapacitated and can see the creature. On a failure, the creature can't take reactions until the start of its next turn and must move toward her by the safest route. A creature that succeeds is immune to this trait for 24 hours.

Actions

Multiattack. Beatrice makes two Rending Claw attacks and uses Infernal Word if it is available.

Rending Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8+3) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) fire damage.

Infernal Word (Recharge 5-6). Beatrice utters a word of damning command. Each creature of her choice within 30 ft. must make a DC 17 Wisdom save, taking 27 (6d8) psychic damage and being frightened of her until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half as much damage and not frightened on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wreath of Cinders (Bonus Action). Beatrice cloaks herself in hellfire until the start of her next turn. The first creature that hits her with a melee attack during that time takes 9 (2d8) fire damage.

Beguiling Recoil (Reaction). When a creature within 30 ft. that is charmed or frightened by Beatrice would attack her, she can redirect the attack to another creature she can see within 5 ft. of the attacker.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Claw. Beatrice makes one Rending Claw attack.

Beckon (Costs 1 Action). Beatrice targets one creature she can see within 60 ft. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom save or be pulled 20 ft. straight toward her.

Hell's Tithe (Costs 2 Actions). A burst of hellfire erupts from the throne of the damned. Each creature within 15 ft. of Beatrice must make a DC 17 Dexterity save, taking 14 (4d6) fire damage on a failure, or half as much on a success.

A crowned, claw-gauntleted she-devil of terrible beauty stands astride a heaving mound of grasping, damned bodies, her spiked diadem catching the furnace-light of the pit.

Mound of the Damned (signature). Beatrice is a knot of fused, animate corpses. Difficult terrain within 10 ft. of it costs an extra 5 ft. of movement for enemies, and it can't be knocked prone.

Actions

Grasping Surge. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d10+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 14) if it is Medium or smaller.

Reactions

Drag Under. When a creature it has grappled tries to move away, the Tithe-Hand can pull that creature 10 ft. toward Beatrice.

The living altar beneath her feet — a mound of clutching, half-living damned that hauls the faithful into the heap.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+5Save DC13

Open with Hellish Allure to drag a melee hero into the mound, then Infernal Word the cluster behind it. Kill-priority is whoever can free the grappled ally; she wants them isolated. Drop Throne of the Damned's DC to 12 here so it slows rather than locks the party.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP12d8+48 (102) To-hit+7Save DC15

She charms the party's striker with Hellish Allure, then Beguiling Recoils their swing into a squishy caster. Open Infernal Word the moment two or more bunch up near her throne. Pair her with the Tithe-Hand so escaping melee always gets dragged back into claw range.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC17HP15d8+75 (142) To-hit+9Save DC17

Run her as a true solo: spend legendary Beckon to yank fleeing PCs back, Hell's Tithe to punish clusters, and Claw to keep pressure on the bloodied. Kill-priority for the party is the Tithe-Hand grappler; for her, it's whoever can dispel her charms. When bloodied she leans on Wreath of Cinders every round and beckons the healer onto the mound.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Beatrice?

Natively CR 9 (XP 5,000) at Tier 3 — a solo-capable boss whose legendary actions let her play up against an 11th-15th level party. Scale her down to the Tier 1 or Tier 2 line for lower tables; traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers shift.

Can Beatrice be a companion or ally?

Not as a player ally — she is lawful evil and damns those who approach her. If you want her on the board as a benefactor, use her companion, the Tithe-Hand, as a guardian construct, or reflavor her charm as a fey patron's geas for a corrupted-bargain subplot.

How do I stop her solo fight from being a grapple lockdown?

Throne of the Damned grapples only one creature at a time, and Hellish Allure can be saved out of permanently. Give the party a clear way to topple her off the mound (it removes her half cover and the auto-grapple), and the encounter becomes a mobility duel instead of a stun-lock.
