Bezaliel
Bezaliel — The Encounter
Watcher of shadow, the angel who walked into the dark · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Bezaliel
Among the Watchers set above the lower heavens, Bezaliel was charged to keep vigil over the shadow side of the world, where the light of the seven heavens does not reach. The grimoires name it a Watcher who learned the dark too well: it walked the threshold between the host and the deep, and in that walking some of the night settled into its feathers. Even now its wings carry a barred dusk, and where it passes the air dims as though a cloud had crossed an unseen sun. It is not yet fallen, but it stands at the edge of falling, neither wholly of the loyal choir nor of the rebels who would later cast themselves down. Summoners who bind Bezaliel find an angel that obeys the letter of its oath with cold exactness, granting sight into hidden things and dominion over twilight, yet always with the unspoken price of standing nearer to the dark than is wholly safe.
Run Bezaliel in Sixty Seconds
- Lights out first. Drop Veil of Twilight on turn one; the 20-ft dim-light bubble strips reactions from anyone who starts adjacent (DC scales by tier) and hides Bezaliel for Stealth.
- Open with the gaze. Eclipsing Gaze on the enemy healer or top single-target striker — blinded + psychic damage neuters their next turn before melee even begins.
- Kill-priority is the light-bringer. Whoever casts daylight, faerie fire, or magic-resistance buffs is the threat; everything Bezaliel does keys off staying in dim light, so it should focus or flee them.
- When bloodied, take to the air. Use Folded Wing to dodge the alpha strike, fly out of reach, and switch to gaze-only — it has no legendary actions, so don't let it get pinned in melee.
- Three ways to run it: a lone twilight skirmisher harassing from the dark; the control elite paired under a flagship boss (its best role); or a moral wildcard the party can talk down before it fully falls.
Bezaliel
Medium celestial (angel), lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEMagic Resistance. The angel has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.
Veil of Twilight. Signature. Bezaliel sheds dim light in a 20-foot radius and can dismiss or resume it as a bonus action. While in dim light or darkness, it has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and any creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of the angel must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn, its sight dimmed by shadow.
Actions
Multiattack. Bezaliel makes two Shadow-Touched Blade attacks, or it makes one such attack and uses Eclipsing Gaze.
Shadow-Touched Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) radiant damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage, and the target cannot regain hit points until the start of the angel's next turn.
Eclipsing Gaze. Bezaliel fixes its gaze on one creature it can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or take 18 (4d8) psychic damage and be blinded until the end of its next turn. On a success, it takes half damage and is not blinded.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Folded Wing (Reaction). When Bezaliel is hit by an attack, it can fold a wing to gain +3 AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. If it still hits, the angel can immediately fly up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Four great feathered wings sweep upward in a storm of barred plumes, framing a robed Watcher whose cloak burns away into glowing tatters of fallen light.
Bezaliel, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEShroud Bond (signature). While within 30 feet of Bezaliel, the familiar shares the angel's Veil of Twilight dim light and has advantage on Stealth checks made in it.
Actions
Raking Talons. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4+4) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) necrotic damage.
Reactions
Veil Step. When a creature it can see ends its turn within 10 feet, the familiar can teleport up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space it can see, leaving a swirl of shadow behind.
A coil of living dusk that orbits the angel like a second shadow, drawn from the night caught in its wings.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by killing the lights with Veil of Twilight, then single out the party's healer with Eclipsing Gaze so wounds stay open. Lead a melee bruiser or undead pack — Bezaliel is the control piece, not the wall. If it drops below half, fly up and snipe with the gaze rather than trading blows.
Open with Veil of Twilight to lock down reactions, then Multiattack the squishiest cluster; the no-healing rider punishes parties that bunch up. Kill-priority is whoever removes its dim light or casts daylight-type effects. Pair it under a flagship boss as the elite skirmisher that blinds and isolates while the boss does the heavy hitting.
Run it as a flying lieutenant beside a true boss: open with Eclipsing Gaze on the strongest single-target damage dealer, then Folded Wing your way out of every alpha strike. Keep dim light up so foes lose reactions and your allies hit from stealth. Focus the player who brings light or magic-resistance buffs first.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Bezaliel?
Native CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier-2 encounter for levels 5-10. The sheet scales down to a ~CR 2 brush at levels 1-4 and up to ~CR 11 at levels 11-15; traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.
Can Bezaliel be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a lawful-neutral Watcher it can be bound, bargained with, or recruited by a party that proves itself, granting twilight sight and shadow control. Use its companion piece, the Umbral Familiar, when you want a lighter allied version at the table.
Is Bezaliel a solo boss?
No. It has no legendary actions, so a full party will overwhelm it alone. Bezaliel shines as an add-on: pair it under a flagship boss where it blinds, isolates, and shuts off healing while the bigger threat lands the killing blows.
