Camazots — The Encounter

The Death Bat of the Maya, Hunger Carved in Stone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Camazots

In the long night of the cave-temples, the priests of the first peoples spoke his name only with closed eyes: Camazots, the Death Bat, who dwells in the House of Bats on the road of the dead. They tell that he sheared the head from a hero in the black hours before dawn, and that since then he hungers not for blood alone but for the warmth of a living name. He wears the threshold-stone of a fallen ziggurat across his shoulders, for he is a guardian of doorways no soul should cross unbidden. His lanterns are not for seeing, for he has no eyes; they are jars in which he keeps the last breath of those who screamed. Heat and heartbeat call to him through stone, and his shriek unmakes courage as the night unmakes the day. To hear his wings is to learn that the dark is awake and listening.

Echoing Maw. Camazots perceives by sound and heat through its blindsight. While it can hear, it cannot be blinded, and it has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that cannot see it. A creature it cannot perceive has advantage on saving throws against its Maddening Shriek.

Stone-Slab Bulwark. The carved monolith borne on its shoulders is part of its body. Camazots has advantage on saving throws against being moved against its will, and the first time each turn it is forced to move, the distance is halved.

Actions

Multiattack. Camazots makes two attacks: one with its Rending Claws and one with its Tearing Bite. It can replace the bite with Maddening Shriek if available.

Rending Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+4) slashing damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by 7 (2d6) until it finishes a long rest.

Tearing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Maddening Shriek (Recharge 5-6). Camazots looses a soul-flaying screech. Each creature within a 30-foot cone must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or take 18 (4d8) thunder damage and be frightened until the end of its next turn. On a success, a creature takes half damage and is not frightened.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Lantern-Staff Beacon. Bonus Action. Camazots raises its hanging lanterns; until the start of its next turn, the first creature to hit it with a melee attack takes 7 (2d6) necrotic damage as their lifeforce is drawn into the lamps.

A hulking blue-furred death-bat the height of a doorway, shouldering a glyph-carved stone monolith like a yoke and clutching a lantern-hung staff in claws meant for tearing. Gold Maya plates ring its limbs and chest, and where a face should be there is only a hooded, listening dark.

Cloud of Wings (signature). The swarm of bound bats occupies a 10-foot space and can move through any opening at least 1 inch wide. It has resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage and grants Camazots half cover while sharing its space.

Actions

Draining Flurry. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target in the swarm's space. Hit: 10 (4d4) piercing damage, or 5 (2d4) if the swarm has half its hit points or fewer.

Reactions

Veiling Flight. When a creature targets Camazots with an attack, the swarm sweeps across, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll, then moves up to 10 feet.

A living shroud of cave-bats that Camazots calls from the dark to blind and bleed those who would face him.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open by flying in and shrieking a cone into the clustered party to scatter and frighten them. Kill-priority is the loudest caster or healer that his blindsight pins by sound. He is a brutal mid-fight spike for a low table, not a solo boss; pair him with a cult leader who hides behind the swarm.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP12d10+60 (126) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open at range, fly into the densest knot of PCs and recharge-shriek the moment three or more are in a 30-foot cone. Lead claws into anyone with low HP-max to stack the reduction, and bite the frightened. This is a flagship's heavy add-on, not a solo: stand him beside a spellcaster or warlord and let the swarm screen the casters while he tears the front line.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP18d12+108 (225) To-hit+9Save DC17

Same script, harder: shriek to control a high-level cluster, then full multiattack the most exposed striker, dropping hit-point maxima so healing can't outpace him. Keep the lantern beacon up against melee. Still an add-on at this tier; flank him with a true boss and a second flyer so the party can't focus him down.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Camazots?

Native CR 6 (XP 2,300) for a party of levels 5-10. The block also scales down to roughly CR 2 for levels 1-4 and up to about CR 11 for levels 11-15; traits stay the same and only the numbers move.

Can Camazots be a companion or ally?

Not as written; he is an add-on adversary, not a solo boss and not a player ally. If your story needs a bound version, run him as a powerful summoned guardian under an NPC's command, and use Itzpapal the Bound Swarm-Shadow as the lighter creature he calls to screen and bleed his foes.

Why is Camazots a fiend and not a beast or celestial?

He is the Maya death-bat god of the cave-road of the dead, a malevolent threshold-spirit who feeds on warmth and breath, so he is statted as a Large fiend (devil) with necrotic-draining attacks. He is grounded entirely in public-domain Maya mythology, not any proprietary cosmology.
