Camiel
Camiel — The Encounter
Lion-Maned Angel of Holy Severity and the Sundering Maul · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Camiel
In the old hierarchies Camiel is named among the captains of divine severity, the angel who carries justice as a weapon rather than a word. Where gentler messengers plead, Camiel arrives armored, lion-maned, and silent, for it is sent only when warning has already failed. The grimoires call it the Strength of God made manifest: a being that does not hate those it strikes but will not be turned aside from the sentence it bears. Its maul is said to break not merely bone but pride, leaving the guilty unable to look away from the one who judges them. Soldiers of holy orders invoke its name before a hopeless stand, trusting that Camiel measures courage and cowardice alike. Yet it is no tyrant; it stays its hand the instant a wrong is mended, and it shields the faithful with its own body before it ever raises its hammer in anger.
Run Camiel in Sixty Seconds
- Identity Camiel is a Large celestial warrior-angel, AC 17, HP 127 at home tier; a relentless melee anvil with radiant burst, not a flier-skirmisher.
- Open with fly into reach and Multiattack the enemy controller or healer, triggering Mantle of Severity to drag its attention onto Camiel.
- Kill-priority back-line casters and healers first; the prone rider on its maul sets up advantage for the rest of your host.
- When bloodied stop advancing and turtle: park beside your flagship boss and spend Shield of the Host every round to keep that boss upright.
- Three ways to run it (1) frontline bruiser beside a spellcasting angel, (2) bodyguard whose whole job is Shield of the Host, (3) lone judge that single-targets and prone-locks the party's biggest threat.
Camiel
Large celestial, lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEMantle of Severity. Signature. Camiel radiates unbending judgment. The first time on each of its turns it hits a creature with the Sundering Maul, that creature must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on attack rolls against any target other than Camiel until the start of Camiel's next turn, compelled to face the one who struck it.
Angelic Weapons. Camiel's weapon attacks are magical. When it hits with the Sundering Maul, the attack deals an extra 2d8 radiant damage (included below).
Actions
Multiattack. Camiel makes two Sundering Maul attacks.
Sundering Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Searing Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +5 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d8) radiant damage, and the target sheds dim light in a 5-foot radius until the end of its next turn, gaining no benefit from being invisible against Camiel's next attack.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Shield of the Host (Reaction). When a creature Camiel can see within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Camiel interposes its shield, granting that creature a +3 bonus to AC against the triggering attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.
A towering angel clad in burnished plate, its lion-maned helm framed by vast crimson-and-azure wings, bracing a great warhammer over one pauldron above a heavy kite shield. It stands upon scorched, snow-flecked earth like a sentinel posted at the edge of grace.
Camiel, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEWheel of Embers (signature). Camiel is wreathed in slow-turning rings of holy fire. A creature that starts its turn within 5 feet of Camiel takes 4 (1d8) radiant damage, and the area within 5 feet is difficult terrain for fiends and undead.
Actions
Ember Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) radiant damage.
Reactions
Kindled Ward. When an ally within 30 feet takes radiant or fire damage, Camiel can reduce that damage by 1d8 + 4 as the flame turns aside.
A lesser fire-angel bound to Camiel's vigil, a slow halo of living embers that herds the unclean back toward the maul.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Searing Bolt to pin one target's light, then close and Sundering Maul the squishiest caster. Use Shield of the Host on your lowest-AC frontliner. Pair Camiel with a captain-tier flagship; here it is the heavy-hitter add-on, not a solo.
Open by flying in and Multiattacking the party's controller, using Mantle of Severity to lock its attention onto Camiel. Knock-prone the tankiest melee so allies get advantage. Kill-priority: enemy healers; pair Camiel as the bruiser beside a spellcasting angel or a bigger boss.
Treat as the elite anvil of an angelic host: wade into the densest cluster, Multiattack, and lean on Shield of the Host every round to keep a flagship boss alive. Prone-lock the party's best DPR. It still has no legendary actions, so flank it with a true solo centerpiece.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Camiel?
Camiel is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) in its native Tier 2, sized for a party of levels 5-10. The included Tier 1 and Tier 3 sheets rescale the same traits down to roughly CR 2 or up to roughly CR 11 by adjusting only AC, HP, to-hit, save DC, and damage.
Can Camiel be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a lawful-neutral angel of justice, Camiel makes an excellent guardian NPC or temporary ally for a paladin or holy order. As a controlled ally, run it as a defender: Multiattack, prone-lock the worst enemy, and spend Shield of the Host to protect the party's front line.
Is Camiel a solo boss?
No. Camiel has no legendary actions, so action economy will overwhelm it one-on-one against a full party. It is designed as a centerpiece add-on: pair it with a true solo flagship (a spellcasting archangel or a larger boss) where it serves as the unkillable anvil and bodyguard.
