Chalchiutotolin
Chalchiutotolin — The Encounter
The Jeweled Fowl, plague-bringer who sows fevered ruin · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Chalchiutotolin
Among the Mexica he is named Chalchiutotolin, the Jeweled Fowl, a nocturnal aspect of the smoking mirror and a bringer of plague and unclean fate. Where his shadow falls, wells curdle and grain blackens, and those who breathe his air burn with fevers no poultice can break. He is worshipped by the desperate as a god who can cleanse misfortune, for the same hand that sends disease may withdraw it, should the sacrifice please him. His mask is the grinning face of a flayed victim; his necklaces are the skulls of priests who failed their offerings. Diviners say he stalks the feast-days of pestilence, choosing whole villages to wither so that one favored soul might be spared. To gaze upon his obsidian crown is to know that sickness is not chance but judgment, and that the Jeweled Fowl keeps a ledger of every soul owed to the dark.
Run Chalchiutotolin in Sixty Seconds
- Aura first — its 10-ft. Aura of Pestilence poisons anyone who starts a turn near it AND blocks their healing, so position it where the most PCs cluster.
- Open with Fevered Curse on the squishiest back-liner (5d8 poison, recharge 5-6); keep recharging it onto whoever is healing the party.
- Kill-priority is the healer — between the aura's no-heal clause and Contagion's Reward, shutting down recovery is how this brute wins.
- When bloodied, drop low-HP foes deliberately: Contagion's Reward heals it 10 each time a poisoned creature hits 0.
- Three ways to run it — siege battering-ram (charge the line, maul twice), patient plague (kite at aura range, recharge the curse), or pack leader (chain it to Tlazol and a bigger boss as the muscle).
Chalchiutotolin
Large fiend, chaotic evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEAura of Pestilence. Signature. A miasma of sickness clings to the Jeweled Fowl. Each creature that starts its turn within 10 feet of Chalchiutotolin must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned until the start of its next turn. While poisoned this way, a creature can't regain hit points.
Plague Carrier. When a creature is reduced to 0 hit points by Chalchiutotolin's attacks, festering rot takes hold: the next creature to touch the body or move within 5 feet of it within 1 minute must make a DC 14 Constitution save or be poisoned for 1 hour.
Actions
Multiattack. Chalchiutotolin makes two attacks with its Obsidian Maul.
Obsidian Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 7 (2d6) poison damage as obsidian teeth tear sickness into the wound.
Fevered Curse (Recharge 5-6). Chalchiutotolin marks a creature it can see within 60 feet with the sign of the fowl. The target must make a DC 14 Constitution saving throw, taking 22 (5d8) poison damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature that fails is also poisoned until the end of its next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Contagion's Reward. Reaction. When a creature poisoned by Chalchiutotolin within 30 feet drops to 0 hit points, Chalchiutotolin regains 10 hit points as the spilt life feeds its rot.
A skull-masked god-brute crowned in obsidian feathers, draped in trophy skulls and bandaged in burial linen, dragging a runed maul lined with diseased teeth.
Chalchiutotolin, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINERot-Scent (signature). Chalchiutotolin has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell and can track a creature it has wounded across any distance for 24 hours.
Actions
Diseased Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d4 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be poisoned for 1 minute.
Reactions
Guard the God. When a creature within 5 feet hits Chalchiutotolin, Chalchiutotolin lunges and the attacker takes 4 (1d8) piercing damage.
A gaunt, scab-furred hound that pads at the god's heel, its breath a visible fog of contagion.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Fevered Curse on the healer or anyone clustered, then wade in with the maul. Park its Aura of Pestilence in the middle of a packed party so two or three suffer the no-healing poison each round. Kill-priority is whoever can cure disease or restore hit points. Pair it with a flagship plague boss; it is the heavy hitter, not the centerpiece.
Open with Fevered Curse on the back line, then stand where its 10-ft. Aura touches the most bodies so cluster-busters get punished. Two maul swings a round each carry a poison rider, so prioritize melee targets that lack hit points to spare. When bloodied it leans on Contagion's Reward, dropping low foes to heal itself. It is the muscle piece beside a bigger plague-god, never a true solo.
Lead with Fevered Curse on a spellcaster, then maul-rush into the tightest knot to bathe them in its Aura. The no-healing clause makes attrition lethal, so kill-priority is the party's cleric. Use Contagion's Reward to snowball off your own kills. Even scaled up it is an elite add-on flanking a stronger pestilence lord, not a standalone boss.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Chalchiutotolin?
Natively CR 6 (XP 2,300), a Tier 2 threat for parties of levels 5-10. The record also provides Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 3 (levels 11-15) stat lines so you can drop the same plague-brute into any campaign by swapping AC, HP, to-hit, and DC.
Can Chalchiutotolin be a companion or ally?
As a plague god he is built as an adversary, but a desperate cult or a character who has bargained for his favor could field him as a temporary ally. For a player-side pet, use the included companion Tlazol, the Bound Plague-Hound, instead.
Is Chalchiutotolin a solo boss?
No. He is solo_capable=false: a hard-hitting add-on with no legendary actions, meant to flank a true centerpiece. For a single climactic fight, pair him with a stronger pestilence lord and a few diseased minions rather than running him alone.
