Chang'e
Chang'e — The Encounter
Exiled lady of the moon, who drank immortality alone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Chang'e
She was a mortal woman once, wife to the archer who shot down the burning suns and earned from the heavens a single draught of immortality, enough for one. Whether to keep it from a thief or to spare herself a cruel fate, she swallowed the elixir whole and rose, weightless, beyond the reach of the earth she loved. The moon took her and would not give her back. Now she dwells in the cold silver palace of the lunar disc, attended only by the Jade Rabbit that pounds the herbs of long life in an endless mortar. On the night of the harvest moon, the people below set out cakes and lanterns and gaze upward, and sometimes she gazes back, beautiful and unbearably distant. Those who climb to her in dreams find no cruelty in her, only a sorrow as wide as the night sky, and a power that falls quiet and absolute as moonlight on snow.
Run Chang'e in Sixty Seconds
- Hold position: she fights from range on the crescent. Never let her close to melee by choice. Open with greater invisibility, then rays from cover.
- Kill-priority: her Silver Ray makes a target shed light so it can't hide. Aim it at your rogue or anyone relying on stealth, then at the healer.
- When bloodied: lead with Cone of Cold or Moonbeam on the tightest cluster, then Moonfall to deny reactions, then teleport to fresh dim light and reset.
- Three ways to run her: as a tragic talk-her-down encounter (she is neutral good and immune to fear), as a pure kite-boss who never stands still, or paired with dragon/spirit adds as the untouchable artillery behind the wall.
- Her escape valve: Immortal's Distance + Lunar Step + Veil of Mist mean a single fighter cannot lock her down. Use forced movement, grapples, or counterspell pressure instead of chasing.
Chang'e
Medium celestial, neutral good
CR 9 · 5,000 XP · GUIDELINEMoonlit Form. Chang'e sheds dim light in a 20-foot radius. While in dim light or darkness, she has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks and ranged attacks against her are made with disadvantage as she fades to silver mist.
Innate Spellcasting. Chang'e's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 15). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: At will: light, sacred flame, sleep. 3/day each: moonbeam, calm emotions. 1/day each: greater invisibility, cone of cold.
Immortal's Distance. Signature. Chang'e drank the elixir alone and lives apart from all things. The first time each turn a creature within 5 feet hits her with a melee attack, she may teleport up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space she can see and the attacker is wreathed in cold lunar fire, taking 7 (2d6) cold damage.
Actions
Multiattack. Chang'e makes two Silver Ray attacks, or casts one spell and makes one Silver Ray attack.
Silver Ray. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6+4) radiant damage, and the target sheds dim light for 1 minute (it gains no benefit from being unseen).
Touch of the Cold Moon. Melee Spell Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6+5) cold damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Lunar Step (Bonus Action). Chang'e magically teleports, along with any equipment she is wearing or carrying, up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see that is in dim light or darkness.
Veil of Mist (Reaction). When a creature she can see makes an attack roll against her, Chang'e adds 3 to her AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. She fades partly to silver vapor.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Silver Ray. Chang'e makes one Silver Ray attack.
Drifting Cloud (Costs 1 Action). Chang'e flies up to half her flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Moonfall (Costs 2 Actions). Chang'e calls down cold light at a point within 60 feet. Each creature within 10 feet of that point must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or take 14 (4d6) cold damage and be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn.
A serene immortal reclines upon a silver crescent above rolling clouds, her lunar crown crowned with a horned diadem, the Jade Rabbit pressed faithfully to her side.
Chang'e, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEElixir Pestle (signature). The Chang'e grinds the herbs of immortality. As an action, it touches a willing creature within 5 feet; that creature regains 11 (2d8+2) hit points and is cured of one disease or the poisoned condition. It can do this 3 times per day.
Actions
Mortar Strike. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6+4) bludgeoning damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage.
Reactions
Faithful Leap. When Chang'e takes damage from an attack within 10 feet, the Chang'e can leap in the way, taking half that damage in her stead.
The pale rabbit of the moon, ever at her side, its mortar full of the silver herbs that keep death at bay.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open from the crescent at range with Silver Ray on whoever wears the least armor, marking them so they cannot hide. If the party clusters, drop Moonbeam and walk it onto them each turn. Lunar Step away the instant a melee fighter closes; let the Jade Rabbit body-block while she chips from the dark.
She is the centerpiece, not an add-on. Open with greater invisibility, then Multiattack rays from cover; spend legendary actions on Silver Ray and Drifting Cloud to stay 60+ feet from the front line. Kill-priority is the party healer, blinded by her glow so they can't hide; when bloodied, lead with Cone of Cold on the cluster, then Moonfall to lock down reactions before she steps to fresh dim light.
Run her as a high-tier skirmish boss who simply cannot be pinned. Lead Moonfall + Cone of Cold on any cluster, then teleport every round with Lunar Step and Immortal's Distance so melee never lands twice. Pair with cloud-spirit or dragon adds (Qinglong, Black Tortoise) to wall off the casters while she snipes from the moon.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Chang'e?
Her native sheet is CR 9 (5,000 XP), a Tier 2 solo centerpiece for a party of levels 5-10. Because she carries legendary actions and three teleport effects she plays up a band, behaving like a CR 11 fight despite the leaner numbers. Scale her to AC 14 / DC 13 for Tier 1 or AC 18 / DC 17 / 190 HP for Tier 3.
Can Chang'e be a companion or ally?
Yes. She is neutral good and immune to being charmed or frightened, so she makes a natural patron, oracle, or reluctant ally rather than a brute. Use her companion stat block, the Jade Rabbit, as a healing-support familiar for a player or NPC; its Elixir Pestle restores hit points and cures poison or disease three times a day.
Why is Chang'e a celestial and not a monster to simply kill?
She is an exiled immortal of the moon, not a fiend, and the encounter is built to be won by talking, riddling, or out-positioning as much as by damage. She refuses to be pinned in melee, so reward players who use forced movement, illumination, and persuasion over a straight slugfest.
