Cronos — The Encounter

Titan of the harvest scythe, devourer who unbound his chains · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Cronos

Eldest of the elder powers, Cronos rose by the sickle and reigned in the golden age before the gods. Warned by prophecy that his own get would cast him down as he had cast down his sire, he swallowed each child at its birth, and so the fear of succession became his hunger and his ruin. In the end he was deceived, made to disgorge what he had eaten, and bound in chains beneath the world to wait out the long ages. The miniature shows that wait ended: the fetters are broken, the scythe is lifted again, and the Titan walks free with the harvest blade that once unmade his father. Where he treads, hours run thin and harvests come too soon or not at all; mortals near him feel their years spent against their will. He is no devil and no demon but a giant of the first making, vast, patient, and devouring, who measures every living thing for the reaping.

Devourer's Hunger. When a creature within 10 ft. of Cronos is reduced to 0 hit points, Cronos regains 15 hit points and his next attack this turn or his next turn is made with advantage. He hungers to swallow all that he sires.

Unbound Chains. Cronos drags the broken fetters of his old prison. As a bonus action he may lash them at a Large or smaller creature he can see within 15 ft.; that creature must succeed on a DC 17 Strength save or be restrained until the end of its next turn, pulled 5 ft. toward him.

Magic Weapons. Cronos's scythe attacks are magical.

Actions

Multiattack. Cronos makes two Harvest Scythe attacks. He may replace one with Stolen Hour (recharge in effect).

Harvest Scythe. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d10 + 7) slashing damage, and a creature that is Large or smaller is knocked prone on a failed DC 17 Strength save.

Stolen Hour (Recharge 5-6). Cronos warps time around a point he can see within 60 ft. Each creature within 20 ft. of that point must make a DC 17 Wisdom save, taking 36 (8d8) necrotic damage and being incapacitated until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and no condition on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Rewind (Reaction). When Cronos takes damage that would reduce him to 0 hit points, he may instead drop to 1 hit point and gain 25 temporary hit points as he reels an instant of time backward. Once used, he cannot use this again until he finishes a long rest.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Scythe Sweep. Cronos makes one Harvest Scythe attack.

Drag the Chains (Costs 2 Actions). Cronos uses Unbound Chains against a creature he can see within 15 ft., and may move up to 10 ft. without provoking opportunity attacks.

Slip the Moment (Costs 2 Actions). Each creature within 10 ft. of Cronos must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom save or have its speed reduced to 0 until the end of its next turn as time thickens around it.

A horn-helmed Titan looms over a ring of jagged teeth, harvest-scythe planted and a snapped manacle still trailing from his free hand. The chains that bound him hang broken, and time itself seems to slow in his shadow.

Borrowed Years (signature). Once per turn when this ally hits a creature, it siphons a moment of life: it gains 5 temporary hit points and the target's speed drops by 10 ft. until the end of that creature's next turn.

Actions

Reaping Hook. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (2d10 + 6) slashing damage.

Reactions

Harvest the Falling. When a creature within 10 ft. drops to 0 hit points, this ally may move up to its speed toward the Titan without provoking opportunity attacks.

A lesser harvest-spirit risen from the same broken prison, it gathers the slain so the Titan may feed.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP48 (7d10+10) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run as a looming half-myth: lead with Harvest Scythe to knock the front-liner prone, then chains-grab whoever flees. Kill-priority is the healer; deny rests with Stolen Hour. At this tier treat Rewind as a one-time scare and let him fall after.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP130 (15d10+45) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by chaining the squishiest caster to him, then Multiattack the prone target. If the party clusters, save Stolen Hour for three or more in the blast. Pair him with skeleton or Spartan adds so they finish the restrained victims he sets up.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP207 (18d12+90) To-hit+12Save DC17

His home tier and a true solo boss. Open with Stolen Hour into the cluster, then Multiattack the incapacitated target while Devourer's Hunger heals him off any drop. Spend legendary actions on Slip the Moment to freeze the melee, hold Rewind for the killing blow, and target the healer first.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Cronos?

Natively CR 13 at tier 3 (levels 11-15) — AC 18, 207 HP, +12 to hit, save DC 17. He is a solo boss with legendary actions and a once-per-rest Rewind, so his sheet plays up a band. Use the tier 1 and tier 2 lines to drop him into lower-level games as a looming, scaled-down threat.

Can Cronos be a companion or ally?

Cronos himself is a Titan adversary, not an ally. For a friendly version use the bundled companion, The Sickle Reaped, Bound — a lesser harvest-spirit (AC 16, 120 HP) that siphons years and gathers the slain. It pairs naturally beside the Titan or stands in as a smaller time-themed threat.

How do I scale Cronos for a lower-level party?

Use the tier 1 or tier 2 rows: keep every trait, action, and the legendary list identical and only swap the AC, HP, to-hit, and save DC. At tier 1-2 he is best run as a flagship boss with a few skeleton or Spartan adds so the lower numbers still feel like a Titan.
