Cueyatl
Cueyatl — The Encounter
The Swollen Rain-Toad, devourer of the drowned earth · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Cueyatl
When the sky-fathers loosed the waters to drown the old creation, it was Cueyatl who opened its jaws and drank the flood, swelling vast and bloated so the surviving peoples might keep their footing. The grateful tribes crowned the rain-toad in jade and raised it to the rank of a minor god, leaving offerings of maize and beetle-gold at the edges of every cenote and reed-choked marsh. Yet a swallowed flood must one day be given back. In seasons of drought the priests beat the water-drums until Cueyatl rouses, and where it crawls the rain comes sheeting down in a roar that no fire can survive. The lesser toad-folk who attend it are no mere beasts but its sworn warriors, and they will spear any who approach the god uninvited. To anger Cueyatl is to invite the deluge, for it can spit back every river it has ever drunk.
Run Cueyatl in Sixty Seconds
- Open with the Tongue. First turn, Lashing Tongue the most fragile PC, drag them 20 ft. in, then Crushing Maw to grapple. The whole fight is built around isolating one victim in the maw.
- Cloudburst is your control. Every turn, slide the 20-ft. rain onto the enemy ranged/caster line. It blinds them, kills their torches, and makes mud — you spend nothing and they lose accuracy.
- Kill-priority: the freer. Whoever can teleport, misty-step, or dimension-door the grappled ally out of the maw dies first. Bend Tongue and Wet Recoil toward them.
- When bloodied, flood the room. Save Deluge (10d6, cone, prone) for the moment three or more PCs cluster to heal or revive — then Swallowing Lunge the prone ones with legendary advantage.
- Three ways to run it: a wrathful drought-god the party must appease (roleplay, no kill); a swamp boss with its spear-acolytes as adds; or a raid centerpiece where solo_capable legendary actions let it duel a full party of five.
Cueyatl
Huge celestial (titan), neutral
CR 11 · 7,200 XP · GUIDELINEAmphibious. Cueyatl can breathe air and water.
Cloudburst Aura. Signature. A sheeting downpour falls in a 20-foot radius around Cueyatl. The area is heavily obscured to creatures relying on sight, and the ground within is difficult terrain of churning mud. At the start of each of its turns, the toad-god may shift this rain to any point it can see within 60 feet. Open flames (torches, the like) in the area are extinguished.
Standing Leap. Cueyatl's long jump is up to 30 feet and its high jump up to 15 feet, with or without a running start.
Actions
Multiattack. Cueyatl makes two attacks: one with its Crushing Maw and one with its Lashing Tongue.
Crushing Maw. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d8 + 6) piercing damage, and the target is grappled (escape DC 17) if it is Large or smaller. Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained and Cueyatl can't bite another.
Lashing Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 16 Strength save or be pulled up to 20 feet toward Cueyatl.
Deluge (Recharge 5-6). Cueyatl swells and disgorges a 30-foot cone of swallowed floodwater. Each creature in the area makes a DC 16 Dexterity save, taking 35 (10d6) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half damage and remaining standing on a success. The cone leaves the area difficult terrain until the end of Cueyatl's next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Wet Recoil. Reaction, when a creature Cueyatl can see hits it with a melee attack from within 25 feet: Cueyatl lashes its tongue, and the attacker must succeed on a DC 16 Dexterity save or take 9 (2d8) bludgeoning damage and be pulled 10 feet toward the toad-god.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Croak. Cueyatl bellows a flood-warning croak. Each creature within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Constitution save or be deafened until the end of its next turn.
Hop (Costs 1 Action). Cueyatl moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks, and may move its Cloudburst Aura to a point within 60 feet.
Swallowing Lunge (Costs 2 Actions). Cueyatl makes one Crushing Maw attack against a grappled or prone creature with advantage.
A mountain of warty, rain-slick flesh crowned in carved jade and curling horns, Cueyatl squats among its spear-bearing toad acolytes, tongue trailing in the mud like a hunting serpent.
Cueyatl, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEMarsh-Sure (signature). Cueyatl ignores difficult terrain created by water or mud and has advantage on saves against being knocked prone.
Actions
Obsidian Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.
Reactions
Ward the God. When a creature Cueyatl can see attacks Cueyatl, Cueyatl may interpose; the attacker has disadvantage on that attack roll, and Cueyatl must be within 5 feet of Cueyatl.
A wiry toad-warrior in a feathered crest, never more than a leap from its god, spear leveled at any who draw near.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Run it as a swamp landmark, not a slugfest: open with Lashing Tongue to drag the squishiest PC into Crushing Maw range, then grapple and hold. If the party clusters, save Deluge to scatter them and knock them prone. Pair it with the toad-acolytes as a terrifying set-piece a low party should outwit, not trade blows with.
Lead with Lashing Tongue to reel in a healer or caster, grapple with Crushing Maw, and let Cloudburst Aura blind ranged attackers. Kill-priority is anyone who can teleport the grappled ally free. Use Deluge the moment three or more bunch up, then mop up the prone.
Full boss mode: open by shifting Cloudburst Aura onto the ranged line, Tongue-pull the controller into the rain, and Maw-grapple them. Spend legendary Hops to keep the aura on the backline and Swallowing Lunge on whatever you've pinned. Hold Deluge for clustered melee; when bloodied, croak to deafen casters and pull a fresh target with Wet Recoil. Acolytes Ward the God against the hardest hitters.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Cueyatl?
Native CR 11 (XP 7,200), tuned for an 11th-15th level party. Because it has legendary actions it can solo a balanced party of that tier; scaled blocks for tiers 1 and 2 are provided so you can drop it into a level 1-4 or 5-10 game as a set-piece threat.
Can Cueyatl be a companion or ally?
Not directly — it is a Huge minor god. But its sworn warrior Tlalmati, the Spear-Acolyte (AC 14, HP 117) is built as a companion: marsh-sure footing, an obsidian spear, and a reaction to bodyguard whatever it's bound to. Run Tlalmati as a paladin's mount-equivalent, a guide through the marshes, or a defector who has left the god's service.
Why is Cueyatl a celestial and not a beast or fiend?
In Aztec folklore the rain-toad swallowed the world-drowning flood to save the surviving peoples and was raised to godhood for it, so it carries the celestial (titan) type and a neutral alignment — a benevolent-but-dangerous nature spirit. Its poison immunity, cold resistance, and Deluge all flow from that flood-swallowing myth rather than from any infernal source.
