Dagda — The Encounter

The Good God, club-bearer of life and death · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Dagda

Know him as the Dagda, the Good God of the Tuatha De Danann, not good in gentleness but good in skill, for there is no craft he cannot turn his hand to. He bears the Lorg Mor, a club so great that eight men carry it on a wheeled cart, and which leaves a furrow like a boundary-ditch where its head drags. With one end he slays nine men at a single blow; with the other he wakes the slain to breath again, so that he is both the bringer of death and the undoer of it. At his back hangs his cauldron, from which no company ever went unsatisfied, and at his side his living harp, Uaithne, that orders the seasons and calls forth the threefold music of weeping, of laughter, and of sleep. He is a father of gods, a keeper of treaties, and a glutton of legendary appetite, plain in his manner and terrible in his power.

Two-Ended Club (Lorg Mór). Dagda's great club kills with one end and restores with the other. He chooses each turn which end is forward: the killing end deals extra damage (included below), or the reviving end heals instead of harms. As a bonus action when wielding the reviving end, he touches a creature he can reach and restores 22 (4d8+4) hit points, or returns a creature that died within the last minute to 1 hit point.

Cauldron of Plenty. The sack at Dagda's back never empties. At the start of each of his turns he gains 10 temporary hit points (to a maximum of 30).

Magic Resistance. Dagda has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. Dagda makes two attacks with his great club.

Great Club (Killing End). Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d8+6) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Harp of Seasons (Recharge 5-6). Dagda sounds his harp in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure a creature takes 27 (6d8) psychic damage and is incapacitated until the end of its next turn as wild grief, mirth, or slumber overtakes it; on a success it takes half damage and is not incapacitated.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Reviving Touch. (Bonus Action) When wielding the reviving end of his club, Dagda restores 22 (4d8+4) hit points to a creature within 10 feet, or returns a creature that died within the last minute to 1 hit point.

Earth-Furrow. (Reaction, when a creature within 10 ft. hits Dagda) The dragging club gouges the ground; Dagda may move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks, and the triggering attacker must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Club Sweep. Dagda makes one Great Club (Killing End) attack.

Restore (Costs 1 Action). Dagda restores 22 (4d8+4) hit points to himself or one ally within 30 feet.

Striding Wrath (Costs 2 Actions). Dagda moves up to his speed and makes one Great Club attack at any point during the move. Each creature he moves through must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

A broad-shouldered, fur-cloaked god strides forward dragging a club so vast its head leaves a furrow in the earth, a bottomless sack of plenty slung at his back. His braided beard and easy menace mark him as a father and a thunderhead both.

Threefold Music (signature). On its turn, the harp plays one strain that lasts until its next turn: Weeping (enemies within 30 ft. have disadvantage on attack rolls), Laughter (allies within 30 ft. have advantage on saving throws against being frightened), or Sleep (one creature within 30 ft. that can hear it must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom save or fall unconscious for 1 minute, waking if damaged).

Actions

Resonant Chord. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) thunder damage.

Reactions

Discordant Ward. When an ally within 30 feet is reduced to 0 hit points, the harp sounds a sustaining note; that ally instead drops to 1 hit point.

Dagda's oaken harp answers only his hand, flying to him across a battlefield and ringing the air with grief, joy, or slumber as he wills.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP50 (8d8+14) To-hit+4Save DC12

Run him as a wandering hedge-god the party must placate, not kill. Open with the Harp of Seasons to scatter a clustered low-level party, then wade in with the killing end against the squishiest target. He is a wall here; let the heroes win by parley or by surviving, not by attrition.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP130 (15d8+45) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open with the killing end on the front-line tank to knock it prone, then Striding Wrath through the casters. Kill-priority: anything that can dispel or out-heal his Cauldron temp HP. When bloodied, switch to the reviving end and keep allies standing while the harp sings Sleep on the party leader.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP207 (18d8+126) To-hit+11Save DC17

Solo boss: lead with Harp of Seasons to incapacitate the cluster, then Multiattack the worst damage-dealer and use legendary Club Sweep on its turn. Kill-priority: the party's healer and dispeller (his temp HP + self-Restore make a damage race futile otherwise). When bloodied, lean into the reviving end and Restore legendary action to outlast the party; pair with no one, he is the flagship.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Dagda?

Natively CR 11 (Tier 3, levels 11-15), built as a solo boss. Because he has legendary actions, a reaction, and strong self-healing, his sheet drops one band from a pure CR-11 statline so he plays up against a full party of four. Scale him down with the Tier 1 (CR ~2) or Tier 2 (CR ~6) numbers for lower-level tables.

Can Dagda be a companion or ally?

Yes. As the Good God of the Tuatha De Danann he is a benevolent patron, and his reviving-end club and Cauldron of Plenty make him a powerful battlefield ally. The included companion, Uaithne the Living Harp, can join the party on its own to buff allies, dent enemies, and yank a falling hero back to 1 HP.

Why is Dagda a celestial and not a giant or fiend?

He is statted from what the render shows and from his public-domain Irish mythology: a benevolent father-god of life, death, plenty, and the seasons. That places him as a Medium celestial of neutral good alignment rather than a giant brute or fiend, despite his size and earth-furrowing club.
