Diwata — The Encounter

Blossom-Crowned Spirit of the Sacred Grove · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Diwata

In the old tongue of the islands she is Diwata, a guardian of the sacred grove and the unseen keeper of every spring, balete tree, and field of rice. The folk leave offerings of food and whisper "tabi-tabi po"—pardon, please—before passing through her haunts, for she is generous to the courteous and pitiless to those who fell her trees or foul her waters. She wears the wild as a gown: orchids in her hair, thorned vines about her arms, a rose for a throne. Beauty is her weapon as surely as the lash of bramble; many a hunter has wandered into her bower beguiled and never found the path home, kept as a charmed gardener until his hair turned grey. Yet bring her honest reverence and a clean offering, and she will bless your harvest, guide you from the deep wood, and turn the rains kind. To harm her grove is to invite a quiet, blooming ruin.

Grove-Bound. The diwata draws strength from her sacred tree or flower. While within 60 feet of it, she regains 10 hit points at the start of each of her turns. If the grove anchor is destroyed, she loses this trait and has disadvantage on attack rolls until she takes a short rest.

Innate Spellcasting. The diwata's spellcasting ability is Charisma. She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: at will—druidcraft, entangle; 3/day each—charm person, sleep; 1/day each—plant growth, hold person.

Actions

Multiattack. The diwata makes two Thorn Lash attacks, or casts a spell and makes one Thorn Lash attack.

Thorn Lash. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8+3) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pulled 10 feet toward the diwata.

Beguiling Bloom (Recharge 5–6). The diwata's flower flares with intoxicating color. Each creature of her choice within 30 feet that can see her must make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 22 (4d10) psychic damage and is charmed until the end of its next turn; on a success, it takes half damage and is not charmed.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Grove Step. Bonus Action. The diwata magically teleports, along with any equipment she is wearing or carrying, up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space she can see within reach of plants or flowers.

A graceful spirit rises from the heart of a great blooming rose, her hair flowing like river-mist and her body wreathed in living leaf and petal. Where she drifts, the wild bends toward her with adoring stillness.

Trail-Tangler (signature). Creatures that try to track the companion or its mistress through the wild have disadvantage on the check, and become lost for 1 minute on a failure (no save), wandering in confused circles.

Actions

Hoof and Mane. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and a Medium or smaller target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Reactions

Bolt Away. When a creature ends its turn within 10 feet, the tikbalang moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A long-limbed, horse-headed guardian bound to the grove's service, it herds intruders in maddening circles until the diwata decides their fate.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with entangle to root the cluster, then pick off rooted targets with Thorn Lash from 10 feet. If clustered, save Beguiling Bloom for three-or-more bunched foes. Kill-priority: ranged attackers and anyone with fire. Pair her with melee bruisers—she is the controller, not the line.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by casting hold person on the party tank, then Thorn-Lash someone into reach. Use Beguiling Bloom the instant three or more are inside 30 feet. Keep her within 60 feet of the flower anchor for the heal; when the party splits to destroy it, Grove Step away and re-engage. Kill-priority: whoever swings at the grove. She is the X-piece—pair her with a brute or a flagship boss to hold the front.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+100 (190) To-hit+9Save DC17

Lead with plant growth to quarter the battlefield, then hold person the heaviest hitter. Beguiling Bloom every recharge on bunched foes; Grove Step to stay anchored to the bloom and out of melee. Kill-priority: dispellers and anyone targeting her grove anchor. Run her as the controller behind a true centerpiece boss.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Diwata?

Her home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier 2 control-caster built for parties of levels 5–10. The record also includes Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) versions—identical traits and actions, only the numbers move—so you can drop her into almost any table.

Can Diwata be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a neutral good fey she makes a natural patron or guide—if the party shows her grove genuine reverence and brings an honest offering, she'll bless their harvest, heal them within her bower, and guide them safely through the deep wood. Cross her trees or waters, though, and she becomes the encounter.

Does she work as a solo boss?

Not really—she has no legendary actions and folds under focus fire once her grove anchor falls. Run her as the control piece beside a sturdy brute or a flagship boss; she shines tangling and charming the party while a bigger threat holds the front.
