Dobrochoczy
Dobrochoczy — The Encounter
Kindly Wood-Wight Woven from Living Root and Bough · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Dobrochoczy
In the deep birch-and-pine forests of the old Slavic lands, the Dobrochoczy is named for its kindness: a wood-wight that walks where the trees grow thickest and harms no traveller who passes with a quiet heart. Woodcutters leave bread and salt on the stumps for it, and in return it guides lost children back to the path and turns wolves from a sleeping camp. But it is the soul of the grove made flesh, and the grove must be defended. Let an axe bite living wood, let a snare close on a fawn, let blood be spilled beneath its boughs, and the kindly thing wakes wrathful. Roots surge from black earth, long limbs lash like storm-thrown branches, and the offender is dragged down into the loam to feed the forest he wronged. The wise honor it. The greedy do not leave its trees.
Run Dobrochoczy in Sixty Seconds
- Hold the ambush. It looks like a dead snag (DC 16 Investigation). Open from stealth the turn the party steps into 15-foot reach, not before.
- Open with Snare of Roots when foes bunch up, then Multiattack the most exposed caster. Restrained targets are easy follow-up hits.
- Grapple is the whole game. Each Lashing Bough that grabs locks one limb on one victim; drag that victim away from their healer and use Heartwood Shudder when they try to break free.
- Fire is its weakness. Rooted Vitality and the Kindly Wood-Wight sap-heal both die the moment it takes fire damage, so make players spend their fire to stop the regen.
- Three ways to run it: the gentle guardian that only fights when blood is spilled in its grove; the patient ambush-snag on a forest road; or the grapple-anchor add-on chained to a Leshy or witch who needs the party pinned.
Dobrochoczy
Large plant, neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEFalse Appearance. While the Dobrochoczy remains motionless among trees and roots, it is indistinguishable from a dead, storm-twisted snag. A creature must succeed on a DC 16 Intelligence (Investigation) check to discern that it is a living thing.
Kindly Wood-Wight. Signature. The Dobrochoczy never strikes first against the gentle. While no creature within 30 feet has dealt damage to it or to a plant, beast, or fey this turn, the Dobrochoczy gains advantage on Wisdom saving throws and any creature within 10 feet that ends its turn unbloodied regains 5 hit points as fresh sap and bark knit over its wounds. The moment blood is spilled in its grove, this benefit ends until the next dawn.
Rooted Vitality. While standing on natural earth, the Dobrochoczy regains 10 hit points at the start of each of its turns if it has at least 1 hit point. This regeneration does not function while it has taken fire damage since its last turn.
Actions
Multiattack. The Dobrochoczy makes two Lashing Bough attacks.
Lashing Bough. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (3d8 + 3) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it is grappled (escape DC 15). Until the grapple ends, the target is restrained and the Dobrochoczy cannot use that bough on another target.
Snare of Roots (Recharge 5-6). Living roots erupt from the soil in a 20-foot radius centered on a point the Dobrochoczy can see within 60 feet. Each creature in that area must make a DC 15 Strength saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 18 (4d8) bludgeoning damage and is restrained until the end of its next turn; on a success, it takes half damage and is not restrained.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Heartwood Shudder. Reaction. When the Dobrochoczy takes damage from a creature it is grappling, it twists its bound limb, and the grappled creature must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or take 7 (2d6) bludgeoning damage as the bough crushes inward.
A hunched giant of braided deadwood and silver root, its long whip-like limbs ending in clutching fingers of branch, and a gaunt fanged face peering out from a crown of antler-like boughs.
Dobrochoczy, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINELoam Step (signature). Dobrochoczy leaves no tracks and ignores difficult terrain made of plants, roots, or undergrowth. It has advantage on Stealth checks while in a forest.
Actions
Root-Fanged Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Guard the Grove. When an ally within 5 feet is hit by an attack, Dobrochoczy lunges, imposing disadvantage on that attack roll.
A low, broad beast of matted moss and living branch that pads silently at the wood-wight's heel, all green fur and birch-bark teeth.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open hidden via False Appearance, then grab the squishiest caster with Lashing Bough and drag them away from the party. If foes cluster, lead with Snare of Roots to restrain a knot of them before lashing. Pairs with a bigger forest threat (a Leshy or Vukodlak) as the grappler that locks down the back line.
This is the grappler/controller piece, not the boss. Stay motionless until the party enters reach, then Snare of Roots into double Lashing Bough on the kill-priority target (the healer or controller). Watch the fire: Rooted Vitality shuts off the moment it is burned, so make the party choose between burning it and pressing the flagship. Pair it with a stronger centerpiece that it shields by tying down attackers.
Now a forest siege-piece: open Snare of Roots on the clustered melee, then grapple two separate threats and crush them with Heartwood Shudder each time they fight free. Kill-priority is still the caster it can reach. Pairs beneath a flagship boss as the anchor that denies movement across the whole battlefield.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Dobrochoczy?
Its home stat block is CR 6 (2,300 XP), tuned for a party of levels 5-10. Scaled records are provided for tiers 1 (levels 1-4) and 3 (levels 11-15) so you can drop it into almost any forest fight.
Can Dobrochoczy be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a kindly wood-wight it is a natural grove-guardian patron: it will protect characters who honor the forest, guide the lost, and fight beside them when their cause spares living wood. Use its Mosshound, Mshyk, as a lighter allied beast if you want a smaller companion at the table.
Is the Dobrochoczy always hostile?
No. By folklore it harms no one who passes with a quiet heart and leaves the trees unharmed. It turns wrathful only when the grove is wounded, an animal is snared, or blood is spilled beneath its boughs, which makes it a flexible encounter you can resolve through respect rather than combat.
