Engkanto Earth
Engkanto Earth — The Encounter
Horned earth-spirit of the diwata wilds, staff of green stone · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Engkanto Earth
Among the diwata that hold the wild places of the islands, the earth engkanto is a warden of root and stone, neither kind nor cruel but jealous of its ground. Folk who trespass on its mounds without the courtesy of a whispered "tabi-tabi po" find their paths swallowed, their feet rooted, their bones aching as the land turns against them. It carries a staff of living wood set with a green river-stone, and through this charm it speaks to the soil, bidding the earth rise as a wall or open as a grave. Offerings of rice and honey laid at its anthill home win passage and sometimes a buried treasure; insults win a wasting sickness no healer can name. The horned engkanto answers to older spirits of mountain and storm, walking at their side as a shield of stone. To bargain with one is to bargain with the ground beneath your house, which has more patience than any mortal.
Run Engkanto Earth in Sixty Seconds
- Hold and harass - this is a controller, not a brawler. Open with Hurled Stone to slow the fastest enemy, then use Stone Stride to drift away without provoking opportunity attacks.
- Quake Pulse is the moment - wait until two or more PCs cluster within 15 ft., then drop it to knock them prone and lay down difficult terrain that wrecks their next turn.
- Kill-priority: the iron-poor - it resists nonmagical, non-cold-iron weapons, so steer its attacks at whoever swings mundane steel and let casters with cold-iron or magic earn the kill.
- When bloodied, lean on Sink Away and Earth Glide - sink to halve a heavy hit, burrow under the line, and resurface to Quake Pulse the squishy back rank.
- Three ways to run it: (1) lone ambusher of a wilderness shrine, (2) the rooted bodyguard standing beside a flagship mountain or storm boss, (3) a bargain-keeper that turns hostile only if the party insults its ground.
Engkanto Earth
Medium fey, neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEEarth Glide. The engkanto can burrow through nonmagical, unworked earth and stone without disturbing it. While doing so it does not displace material, and creatures cannot follow it unless they can also tunnel.
Stone Stride. Signature. While the engkanto stands on natural ground, difficult terrain made of earth or stone costs it no extra movement, and the first time each turn it moves out of an enemy's reach it does not provoke opportunity attacks. The land itself parts for the spirit it favors.
Actions
Multiattack. The engkanto makes two attacks: one with its earthen staff and one Hurled Stone, or it casts a spell and makes one Hurled Stone attack.
Earthen Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 ft. and knocked prone.
Hurled Stone. Ranged Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, range 40/120 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage. On a hit, the target's speed is reduced by 10 ft. until the end of its next turn as clinging earth grips its feet.
Quake Pulse (Recharge 5-6). The engkanto strikes its staff against the ground. Each creature within 15 ft. of it must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d10) bludgeoning damage and being knocked prone on a failure, or half damage and remaining standing on a success. The area becomes difficult terrain until the start of the engkanto's next turn.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Sink Away. Reaction (recharges after a short rest): When the engkanto takes damage while standing on natural earth or stone, it sinks partway into the ground, halving that damage and then surfacing in an unoccupied space within 15 ft.
A horned, moss-green spirit of bark-hard hide stalks the old growth on reptilian legs, leaning on a gnarled staff crowned with a heart of glowing green stone. Where it walks, roots loosen and the soil remembers.
Engkanto Earth, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINELiving Cairn (signature). Engkanto Earth has resistance to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage and can squeeze through any gap a stream of pebbles could pass.
Actions
Stone Fist. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) bludgeoning damage, and if the target is Large or smaller it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Rockfall Guard. When an ally within 5 ft. is hit by an attack, Engkanto Earth interposes itself, reducing the damage by 7 (2d6).
A trundling cairn of mossed stones the engkanto woke from a riverbed, loyal as the ground is old.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open at range with Hurled Stone to slow the fastest melee striker, then back away through Stone Stride without provoking. If the party clusters, save Quake Pulse to knock the cluster prone and create difficult terrain. Pair it with a bigger threat - it is the control-and-debuff piece, not the kill.
Open by burrowing under the front line and surfacing to Quake Pulse the back-rank casters prone, then staff-shove the survivor. Kill-priority is whoever lacks a cold-iron weapon, since you resist their hits. When focused, spend Sink Away to halve a big crit and reposition. This is an add-on warden - field it beside a flagship mountain or storm spirit it shields.
Lead with a burrow-flank so the party cannot all reach you turn one, then alternate Quake Pulse and double staff strikes to keep frontliners prone. Prioritize the healer; Hurled Stone slows them out of formation. Hold Sink Away for the round you are surrounded and pair it with a true boss so its Earth Glide makes the whole arena hostile ground.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Engkanto Earth?
Its home tier is CR 6 (2,300 XP) for tier-2 parties of levels 5-10. Scaled stat blocks are provided for tier 1 (levels 1-4) and tier 3 (levels 11-15), with identical traits and only the numbers shifting.
Can Engkanto Earth be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a neutral fey warden it can be bargained with - leave offerings of rice and honey and respect its ground, and it may guard a party as a stone shield. Its bound companion, Bato the Boulder-Kin, can also be detached as a tankish ally.
Is it solo-capable as a boss?
No. The earth engkanto has no legendary actions and plays best as an add-on control piece beside a larger flagship threat, such as a mountain or storm spirit it shields with hostile, shifting ground.
