Fallen Angels — The Encounter

Six-Winged Herald, Voice of Heaven Before the Fall · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Fallen Angels

Before the fall there were heralds who stood nearest the throne, six-winged and burning, their voices the law of heaven made sound. This one carried the ward-spear into the host's vanguard, and where its wings opened the air itself turned to glory and no shadow could stand. The grimoires that remember the rebellion name such heralds the last to choose: when the morning star drew a third of the host downward, some of these burning ones folded their middle wings and refused the descent, while others let their light curdle into the cold fire of the pit. Thus a single figure may be met as guardian or as tyrant, unchanged in form but reversed in purpose. To bind one is perilous folly; it answers only to true names spoken without falsehood, and it remembers every oath ever sworn in its hearing, holding the swearer to it across all the years between.

Angelic Weapons. The herald's weapon attacks are magical. When it hits with its spear (included in the attack), the spear deals an extra 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Searing Radiance. Signature. The light of the six wings is unbearable to look upon. At the start of each of the herald's turns, each creature within 10 ft. of it that is not a celestial takes 7 (2d6) radiant damage. A creature blinded by Blinding Brilliance takes double this damage.

Magic Resistance. The herald has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Actions

Multiattack. The herald makes two Heralding Spear attacks.

Heralding Spear. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8+5) piercing damage plus 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Blinding Brilliance (Recharge 5-6). The herald unfurls all six wings in a blaze of glory. Each creature in a 30-foot cone must make a DC 16 Constitution saving throw, taking 36 (8d8) radiant damage on a failed save and being blinded until the end of its next turn, or half damage and no blindness on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wings of Flight. Reaction (when a creature the herald can see ends its turn within 15 ft.): The herald flies up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Spear Strike. The herald makes one Heralding Spear attack.

Soaring Surge (Costs 2 Actions). The herald flies up to its speed and each creature it passes within 5 ft. of takes 7 (2d6) radiant damage.

Word of Light (Costs 2 Actions). The herald speaks a word of pure judgment. One creature it can see within 60 ft. must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or take 13 (3d8) radiant damage and have disadvantage on its next attack roll.

Six pinions of light and shadow spread from a haloed warrior in radiant plate, a great ward-spear raised as it rises upon a coil of churning storm.

Actions

Sun-Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8+4) slashing damage plus 9 (2d8) radiant damage.

Reactions

Shielding Wing. Reaction (when an ally within 5 ft. is hit by an attack): Fallen Angels spreads a wing, granting the ally +3 AC against that attack.

A lesser herald sworn to the same banner, glaive aflame, who shields the burning one's flank with a sweep of its lesser wings.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run it as a wrathful messenger, not a god. Open with Blinding Brilliance on the tightest cluster, then spear the blinded target. Pair it with cultists or a darker captain so the party feels outmatched by its light; flee skyward when bloodied to fight another day.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP14d10+70 (147) To-hit+7Save DC15

Stay airborne and hover at 15 ft. so melee parties must waste turns reaching it. Open Blinding Brilliance, then Multiattack the most exposed striker. Kill-priority is whoever can dispel or counter its radiance; use Wings of Flight to peel away when surrounded.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP18d10+108 (207) To-hit+9Save DC16

Centerpiece boss. Hover above the front line, open Blinding Brilliance into the densest cluster, then Multiattack the blinded targets and spend legendary actions on Spear Strike and Word of Light against casters. When bloodied, Soaring Surge through the party to spread Searing Radiance and reposition; kill-priority is anyone who can blind or ground it.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Fallen Angels?

Its native tier is 3 (CR 11, 7,200 XP) as a solo centerpiece with legendary actions and a banded sheet of AC 18 / HP 207 / +9 to hit / DC 16. Scaled-down stat lines for tier 1 (~CR 2) and tier 2 (~CR 6) are provided in the tiers table; the traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Fallen Angels be a companion or ally?

Yes. Before the fall it is a lawful good herald of heaven and makes a formidable patron or NPC ally; the bundled companion Sariael, Bound (a lesser sworn herald) is built to fight at its flank. Reverse the alignment to lawful evil to run the same figure as a fallen tyrant antagonist.

Is this a devil or an angel?

Statted as a celestial because that is what the render shows — a six-winged, haloed, radiant-armored herald with a ward-spear, from the 'Before the Fall' line. Its mythology lets it be played either way: a guardian of heaven or, should its light curdle, one of the burning ones who chose the descent.
