Fenrir
Fenrir — The Encounter
The bound wolf fated to swallow the sun · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Fenrir
Three things the Aesir feared, and Fenrir was the third. Whelped of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, the wolf grew so swiftly and so vast that the gods dared not slay a guest beneath their roof, and so resolved to bind him instead. Twice he burst their fetters as a man shrugs off cobweb. At last the dwarves forged Gleipnir from impossible things — the footfall of a cat, the roots of a mountain, the breath of a fish — soft as silk and unbreakable. Fenrir, scenting treachery, agreed to be bound only if a god laid a hand within his jaws as pledge. Tyr alone consented, and lost it. So the wolf lies chained upon a sword-wedged island, a river of slaver pouring from his maw, until the day the chain parts. Then he comes with lower jaw scraping earth and upper jaw the heavens, and swallows the sun whole.
Run Fenrir in Sixty Seconds
- Hold for the boss slot. Fenrir is solo-capable at Tier 3 — he wants one big arena and no other adversaries stealing his action economy. Drop him in alone with legendary actions live.
- Open with the howl. Lead with Howl of Ragnarok to deafen and soften the casters, then commit jaws to the squishiest target the next turn.
- Kill-priority is whoever can pin him. Restraint, paralysis, hold spells — Unfettered Fury ignores them, so target the would-be controller first and make the party feel that their lockdown plan failed.
- When bloodied, go reckless. If a swallowed PC is chewing through him, regurgitate, then immediately bite-grapple a fresh victim — keep the swallow clock always running on someone.
- Three ways to run him: a fleeing apocalypse the low-level party merely survives (T1), a grapple-and-swallow bruiser in a mixed fight (T2), or a full legendary-action solo capstone (T3).
Fenrir
Gargantuan monstrosity, chaotic evil
CR 13 · 10,000 XP · GUIDELINEUnfettered Fury. Signature. No chain, rope, web, or magical restraint holds Fenrir for long. He automatically succeeds on saving throws against being grappled, restrained, or paralyzed, and he can spend 5 feet of movement to end one such effect already on him. The first time each turn a creature within 15 feet of him is reduced to 0 hit points, Fenrir gains 10 temporary hit points.
Maw of the Devourer. Fenrir's bite ignores cover from any creature he can see, and a creature swallowed by him (see Swallow) provides total concealment to nothing within his belly. His jaws can open wide enough to bite Huge or smaller targets whole.
Keen Smell. Fenrir has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Actions
Multiattack. Fenrir makes one Bite attack and two Claw attacks. He can replace the Bite with Swallow against a creature he is grappling.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (3d10 + 8) piercing damage, and if the target is a Large or smaller creature it is grappled (escape DC 18). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained and Fenrir can't bite another target.
Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +13 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 15 (2d8 + 8) slashing damage.
Swallow. Fenrir makes one Bite attack against a Large or smaller creature he is grappling. On a hit, the target takes the bite damage, the grapple ends, and the target is swallowed. A swallowed creature is blinded and restrained, has total cover against attacks from outside, and takes 17 (5d6) acid damage at the start of each of Fenrir's turns. If Fenrir takes 25 damage or more on a single turn from a swallowed creature, he must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw at the end of that turn or regurgitate the creature, which falls prone within 10 feet. If Fenrir dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained and can escape using 15 feet of movement, falling prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Run Down. Reaction. When a creature within 50 feet that Fenrir can see takes the Dash or Disengage action, Fenrir can move up to half his speed toward it. If this brings the creature within reach, he may make one Claw attack against it.
Legendary Actions (3/Round)
Snap. Fenrir makes one Claw attack.
Prowl (Costs 1 Action). Fenrir moves up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Howl of Ragnarok (Costs 2 Actions). Fenrir looses a world-ending howl. Each creature within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 16 Wisdom saving throw or take 14 (4d6) thunder damage and be deafened until the end of its next turn; on a success, half damage and no deafness.
A gaunt, mountain-sized wolf prowls across shattered stone, mane bristling like wind-torn flame and jaws parted to show fangs the length of spears. Every sinew of the sculpt strains forward, as though the chains that once held him have only just snapped.
Fenrir, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINERelentless Pursuit (signature). Fenrir ignores difficult terrain and has advantage on checks and saves to avoid being slowed, grappled, or restrained while moving toward prey.
Actions
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.
Reactions
Pack Snap. When an ally hits a creature within 5 feet of Fenrir, Fenrir can make one Bite attack against that creature.
A leaner wolf that runs forever at Fenrir's flank, jaws fixed on the fleeing light — get-of-the-great-wolf, born only to chase and to catch.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
At this scale Fenrir is a campaign-ending menace, not a fair fight — run him as a fleeing terror the party survives, not defeats. Open with Run Down on the first runner; let the Bite-grapple split the party's attention. If cornered, he Prowls away rather than dying.
Open by biting and grappling the squishiest caster, then Swallow on the following turn to remove them from the fight. Kill-priority: anyone trying to cast restraint or polymorph — Unfettered Fury shrugs it off, so make them feel it. Spend legendaries on Snap against melee strikers between turns.
Solo boss. Open with Howl of Ragnarok to deafen the casters, then Bite-grapple-Swallow the lowest-AC target to apply a clock. Use Run Down and Prowl to deny kiting; bank legendaries for Snap on whoever drops below half. When bloodied he becomes reckless — regurgitate to free his jaws, then bite the next victim.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Fenrir?
Native CR 13 (10,000 XP) at Tier 3 as a solo boss. His legendary actions and reaction let him play up about two CR, so a single full party of four to six characters of level 11-15 is the intended fight. Use the Tier 1 and Tier 2 blocks to scale him down for lower-level tables.
Can Fenrir be a companion or ally?
Not Fenrir himself — he is a fate-bound apex predator who answers to no one. But the bundled companion, Skoll the Sun-Chaser, runs alongside him as a leaner pursuit-wolf and makes an excellent secondary threat or, reflavored, a monstrous mount or warband beast for a giant or jotun-aligned villain.
How do I keep Fenrir from being chained or controlled?
Unfettered Fury is built for exactly that — he auto-succeeds against grapple, restrain, and paralysis and can shrug off existing effects for 5 feet of movement. If your players lean hard on lockdown spells, lean into the trait narratively: the chain snaps, the hold fails, and the wolf keeps coming.
