Freya — The Encounter

Falcon-Cloaked Goddess of Fate, Love, and the Chosen Slain · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Freya

Of the goddess Freya the old verses tell that she is the fairest and most fearsome of the Vanir, mistress of love and seidr-craft, and rider of the field of the dead. Half of those who fall in battle she claims for her own hall, the other half going to the high seat of Odin; thus she shares dominion over the chosen slain. She wears the necklace Brisingamen, won from the dwarves, and casts a falcon-feather cloak that lets her cross the nine worlds in the shape of a hunting hawk. As a worker of fate she reads the weave of what will be and can twist a thread before it is cut. War-leaders pray to her before the spear-din, for her favor turns a doomed charge into a remembered victory, and her wrath leaves no song at all. Mortals who keep her rites find love kindled, harvests blessed, and a gentler passage through death's gate.

Magic Resistance. Freya has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects.

Weaver of Fate. Signature. Freya sees the threads of what is to come. Once per turn, when a creature she can see within 60 ft. makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, she may weave its fate: roll a d6 and add (for an ally) or subtract (for an enemy) the result. She decides after the roll but before the outcome is known.

Innate Spellcasting. Freya's spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 17, +9 to hit). She can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components: at will — guiding bolt, sacred flame; 3/day each — fly, lesser restoration; 1/day each — flame strike, greater restoration.

Actions

Multiattack. Freya makes two attacks with Brisingamen Blade, or casts a spell and makes one attack.

Brisingamen Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage plus 13 (3d8) radiant damage.

Falcon Dive. Ranged Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 22 (4d8 + 5) radiant damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 17 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone as Freya's feathered cloak strikes like a stooping hawk.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Claim the Slain (Reaction). When a creature within 30 ft. that Freya can see is reduced to 0 hit points, she may claim it. If an ally, it instead drops to 1 hit point. If an enemy, Freya regains 13 (3d8) hit points as she gathers its fate.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Move. Freya moves up to her speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Radiant Strike. Freya makes one Brisingamen Blade attack.

Sever the Thread (Costs 2 Actions). Freya targets one creature she can see within 60 ft. The target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw or take 18 (4d8) radiant damage and have disadvantage on its next saving throw, as a thread of its fate is cut.

Crowned in a winged warhelm and mantled in vast golden falcon wings, Freya descends with a radiant blade drawn, the chooser of the slain made manifest in gleaming valkyrie plate.

Bristling Charge (signature). If the boar moves at least 20 ft. straight toward a target before hitting it with a Tusk attack, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) slashing damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Actions

Tusk. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) slashing damage.

Reactions

Shield the Goddess. When Freya is hit by an attack while within 5 ft., the boar may interpose, becoming the target instead and taking the damage.

A golden-bristled war-boar that bears the goddess into battle and gores any who would reach her.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+24 (60) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run her as an aspect, not the goddess entire. Open with Falcon Dive to knock the front-liner prone, then beat on the prone target. Use Weaver of Fate to flip the party's first big save against her; pair her with cultists or a valkyrie escort so she is not alone.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Stay airborne with hover and rain guiding bolt / Falcon Dive, only landing to Multiattack a clustered melee. Spend Weaver of Fate to wreck the cleric's concentration save. Pair her with a Norse boss (a jotun or Garmr) as the divine support that makes the fight lethal.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP20d8+100 (190) To-hit+9Save DC17

Home tier — run her solo with legendary actions. Open with flame strike on the cluster, then Multiattack the heaviest hitter. Kill-priority is whoever can lock her down (paladin, grappler); Sever the Thread their save, then Radiant Strike. When bloodied, hover out of reach and use Claim the Slain to top off.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Freya?

Natively CR 11 (Tier 3, levels 11-15) as a solo centerpiece with legendary actions — she drops one band because those actions let her play up. Scaled stat lines are provided for Tier 1 (levels 1-4) and Tier 2 (levels 5-10) so she can appear as a lesser aspect or divine ally in lower-level games.

Can Freya be a companion or ally?

Yes. As a neutral good Vanir goddess she makes a natural patron or battlefield ally. Use her Weaver of Fate and Claim the Slain traits to buoy the party, and treat her innate restoration spells as out-of-combat boons rather than running her at full boss strength against the players.

How do I run her wings and flight at the table?

Lean into it. She hovers at fly 90 ft. and almost never stands still — Falcon Dive and guiding bolt let her fight from above while she picks a target with Weaver of Fate. Only land to Multiattack a clustered group, then lift off again before the melee can answer.
