Gadreel
Gadreel — The Encounter
The Watcher who taught the forging of war · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Gadreel
Among the Watchers who descended in the days before the flood, Gadreel is named in the Book of Enoch as the spirit who led Eve astray and who taught the sons of men the making of the instruments of death: the shield, the breastplate, and the sword for slaughter. For this betrayal the loyal hosts cast him down, yet the knowledge he gave could not be unlearned, and so every forge that beats a blade still answers, faintly, to his old tutelage. He walks now through the rubble of the cities his lesson built, neither devil nor saint but a fallen teacher who regrets nothing. His glaive remembers the first edict that bound men to war, and where he passes, the brave grow suddenly, shamefully afraid of the weapons in their own hands. He does not seek dominion. He seeks only to prove that the gift he gave was never truly his sin alone, but mankind's eager acceptance of it.
Run Gadreel in Sixty Seconds
- Open with Searing Edict at range to brand the most dangerous caster, stripping their ability to hide and softening them for the glaive.
- Forbidden Tutor first-hit matters: land your first glaive strike on the party's biggest threat so its next attack lands at disadvantage.
- Hold Heretic's Rebuke for the first melee fighter who closes; the radiant counter plus the shove keeps strikers from sticking to him.
- When bloodied, lean in: Fallen Radiance adds necrotic and douses the light, so press the attack rather than retreat once he is at half.
- Three ways to run him: aerial skirmisher who never lands (Wingsweep every turn), grim duelist who marks and isolates one hero, or the disciplined lieutenant anchoring a flagship Watcher boss.
Gadreel
Medium celestial, lawful evil
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINEForbidden Tutor. Gadreel taught mortals to make war, and the lesson clings to his blade. The first time Gadreel hits a given creature with his glaive each combat, that creature has disadvantage on its next attack roll before the end of its next turn as old fears of the killing-art surface.
Fallen Radiance. When Gadreel is reduced to half his hit points or fewer, dim light within 20 feet of him sputters into shadow. While bloodied, his attacks deal an extra 5 (2d4) necrotic damage on a hit, and he has advantage on Intimidation checks.
Actions
Multiattack. Gadreel makes two Glaive of the First Forge attacks. He may replace one with Searing Edict (recharge available below) if it is ready.
Glaive of the First Forge. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 4) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) radiant damage.
Searing Edict (Recharge 5-6). Gadreel hurls a lance of fallen light at one creature he can see within 60 feet. The target must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) radiant damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. A humanoid that fails is also branded and sheds dim light for 1 minute, unable to benefit from being hidden.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Wingsweep (Bonus Action). Gadreel beats his great wings and flies up to half his flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks from creatures he can see.
Heretic's Rebuke (Reaction). When a creature within 10 feet hits Gadreel with an attack, he sweeps the glaive's haft across them. The attacker takes 9 (2d8) radiant damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be pushed 10 feet.
A horned, bare-chested angel poised mid-stride above shattered ruins, his vast feathered wings flared as he levels a long forge-bladed glaive. The layered skirt and braided crown mark a Watcher who chose to fall rather than repent.
Gadreel, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEWhisperer of Oaths (signature). Gadreel, who taught mortals to break their vows, can magically read the surface thoughts of any creature within 30 feet that it can see. Once per turn it may grant Gadreel advantage on one attack against a creature it has read this way.
Actions
Corrupting Touch. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6 + 4) necrotic damage, and the target cannot regain hit points until the start of its next turn.
Reactions
Faithless Counsel. When an ally within 30 feet of Gadreel fails a saving throw, Gadreel may whisper a false certainty, letting that ally reroll the save. Once it does so, it cannot again until it finishes a short rest.
A lesser fallen Watcher tethered to Gadreel's cause, all murmured promises and broken oaths, drifting at his shoulder like a second shadow.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Searing Edict on the squishiest caster, then close to glaive range and use Forbidden Tutor on whoever hits hardest to blunt their next swing. If the party clusters, beat your wings and reposition with Wingsweep so they must split to follow. Kill-priority is healers; pair Gadreel with a heavier fallen-angel boss so he plays the reach-skirmisher, not the centerpiece.
Lead with Searing Edict to brand a key target, then Multiattack the same victim so disadvantage from Forbidden Tutor and the brand stack against them. Hold Heretic's Rebuke for the first melee striker who steps in. When bloodied, Fallen Radiance turns him into a damage threat, so press the fight; pair him with a flagship Watcher boss as the relentless add.
Open Searing Edict on the linchpin, then carve with both glaive attacks, riding Forbidden Tutor to keep the tank's swings unreliable. Use Wingsweep every round to stay out of full-melee reach and force the party to chase. Kill-priority is concentration casters; he is the elite lieutenant beside a legendary boss, never the solo.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Gadreel?
Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, ~level 5-10): AC 16, 123 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Scaled stat lines are provided for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) so he fits parties from level 1 to 15.
Can Gadreel be a companion or ally?
Yes, with care. As a fallen Watcher he serves a cause more than a person, so he makes a volatile patron-ally or a redemption-arc NPC rather than a loyal henchman. If you want him fighting beside the party, lean on his ranged Searing Edict and Forbidden Tutor debuff while the heroes hold the line.
Is Gadreel a boss or an add-on?
An add-on. He has no legendary actions, so he is built to fight beside a larger flagship Watcher or fallen-angel boss as an elite skirmisher, not to solo a party. Use his flight and reach to harass while the centerpiece threat does the heavy lifting.
