Gilgamesh (Young)
Gilgamesh (Young) — The Encounter
Two-Thirds-Divine King of Uruk, Wild and Untamed · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Gilgamesh (Young)
Two parts god and one part man, Gilgamesh was raised up to rule the walled city of Uruk, and in his youth his strength outran his wisdom. He wearied his people with contests of arms and would let no champion go unchallenged, for the divine blood in him knew neither rest nor fear. The clay-born wild man Enkidu was shaped by the gods to match him, and the two wrestled in the gateway until the very lintels groaned; finding his equal, the king found at last a friend. Together they marched against the cedar-forest's guardian and brought low a heaven-sent bull. This figure shows him before sorrow tempered him, the untamed morning of his legend, when he believed no wall could hold him and no death could find him. Even so the gods watched, and the day would come when grief sent him wandering in search of the herb that does not let a man grow old.
Run Gilgamesh (Young) in Sixty Seconds
- Open big: charge the heaviest melee PC, hit with the great sword, and force the DC 15 Strength save to knock them prone so your second swing lands with advantage.
- Kill-priority: he is a brute, so beeline the front-line tank and grind them down; if a caster is exposed, recharge Heaven-Splitting Blow onto the cluster instead.
- When bloodied: Two-Thirds Divine keeps him steady, but the next big nova will drop him fast, so this is when you spend Kingly Defiance to escape and reposition.
- Three ways to run him: (1) Champion wall in front of a caster boss, (2) rival warrior in a duel arena with Enkidu at his side, (3) untamed-king mini-boss the party must impress or defeat.
- Remember: Brute already bakes the extra die into his sword line, and Heaven-Splitting Blow recharges on a 5 or 6, so check the cone every turn it's available.
Gilgamesh (Young)
Medium humanoid (demigod), chaotic neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINETwo-Thirds Divine. Gilgamesh has advantage on saving throws against being frightened, charmed, or exhausted, and he ignores difficulty terrain caused by mundane footing. The first time each turn he is reduced below half his hit points he loses no actions to staggering.
Brute. A melee weapon deals one extra die of its damage when Gilgamesh hits with it (included below).
Actions
Multiattack. Gilgamesh makes two attacks with his great sword.
Great Sword of Uruk. Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 5) slashing damage. If the target is Large or smaller it must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.
Heaven-Splitting Blow (Recharge 5-6). Gilgamesh raises the great sword and brings it down in a thunderous arc. Each creature in a 15-foot cone must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 22 (4d8 + 4) slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail are also knocked prone.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Kingly Defiance. Reaction: When Gilgamesh takes damage that would reduce him to 0 hit points, he can instead drop to 1 hit point and immediately move up to his speed without provoking opportunity attacks. He can use this trait once per day.
A bare-chested young king crowned only in wild dark hair, his bronze collar and greaves chased with the sigils of Uruk, hefting a jagged two-handed blade as he stands atop a broken pillar wreathed in cloud.
Gilgamesh (Young), Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEMade to Match Him (signature). While Gilgamesh (Young) is within 30 feet of Gilgamesh, both gain advantage on the first attack roll each makes on its turn against the same creature.
Actions
Wild Grapple. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and a Large or smaller target is grappled (escape DC 15).
Reactions
Shield the King. Reaction: When Gilgamesh is hit by an attack, Gilgamesh (Young) (if within 5 feet) can swap places with him and become the target instead.
A clay-born wild man with matted hair and a beast's roar, shaped by the gods to be the king's equal and made his truest friend.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open by charging the strongest-looking PC and trying to knock them prone with the sword. Save Heaven-Splitting Blow for when two or more PCs cluster. Kill-priority is the front-line tank; pair him with archers or a caster so he isn't focus-fired alone.
Open with a charge and a prone-knock on the heaviest melee PC, then Multiattack the downed target for advantage. Hold Heaven-Splitting Blow until three are clustered. He is a champion brute, not a solo: pair him with Enkidu or a flagship caster boss and let him be the wall the party must get through.
Wade into the densest knot of PCs, prone-knock the tank, and recharge Heaven-Splitting Blow onto the casters. Spend Kingly Defiance the instant a nova drops him. He is the bodyguard piece for a divine or royal boss; keep that boss behind him.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Gilgamesh (Young)?
His native build is CR 6 (2,300 XP), a Tier 2 champion brute for levels 5-10. The included tier table also offers a CR 2-equivalent build for levels 1-4 and a CR 11-equivalent build for levels 11-15, all using the same traits with rescaled numbers.
Can Gilgamesh (Young) be a companion or ally?
Yes. As a demigod king he makes a strong honorable-rival-turned-ally: have the party earn his respect in a contest of arms, then run him as a guest brute with his great sword and Heaven-Splitting Blow. Enkidu, Bound is built to fight alongside him and works just as well at the party's side.
Is Gilgamesh meant to fight the party alone?
No. He is solo_capable false, an add-on champion rather than a centerpiece. Pair him with Enkidu, a divine boss, or city guards so the party faces a real wall; run alone he is a tough mini-boss but lacks the action economy of a true solo.
