Graeae Witches — The Encounter

Grey sister born old, who shares one eye and one tooth · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Graeae Witches

Before there were maidens there were the Grey Ones, the daughters of the old sea and his serpent-bride, born with grey hair and withered hands and never once young. Three sisters who own between them but a single eye and a single tooth, and so must share even the act of seeing. They keep their watch at the threshold of the living world, where the road bends toward the dead, and they will trade prophecy for a kindness or for the eye itself. Heroes have learned that to seize the passing eye is to bargain with three blind crones at once, for they are helpless to find what is taken and will swear any oath to have it returned. Do not pity them. They knew your name and your ending before your mother bore you, and a Grey sister never tells a kind truth when a cruel one will do.

The Shared Eye. The three sisters are born with a single eye and a single tooth, passed hand to hand. While this Graea holds the eye, she has truesight 60 ft. and advantage on attack rolls. As a bonus action she may pass the eye to a willing ally within 5 ft. (granting them that benefit); while blind she has disadvantage on attacks but can still cast spells. Steal the eye and the coven goes nearly sightless.

Coven Magic. While within 30 ft. of at least one other hag, the Graea casts as a 9th-level caster (DC 15). Alone, she casts as a 5th-level caster (DC 13). She knows ray of sickness, hold person, fear, and bestow curse, and can cast each she has slots for once per long rest without expending a slot the first time.

Actions

Multiattack. The Graea makes two Withered Claw attacks, or casts one spell and makes one Withered Claw attack.

Withered Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d8+3) slashing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution save or have its hit point maximum reduced by 7 (2d6) until it finishes a long rest.

Evil Eye (Recharge 5-6). The Graea fixes the shared eye on one creature she can see within 60 ft. The target makes a DC 15 Wisdom save, taking 27 (6d8) psychic damage and being frightened of her until the end of its next turn on a failure, or half damage and no fear on a success.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Whispered Doom. When a creature within 30 ft. fails a saving throw, the Graea may use her reaction to mutter a prophecy of its death; the creature has disadvantage on its next saving throw before the start of the Graea's next turn.

A bent crone in a tattered grey shroud leans on a staff crowned by a watching flame, a skull at her feet and a curse already on her lips. She and her sisters were old before the gods, and they remember every doom they have foretold.

Sisters' Hearth (signature). The cauldron is a fixed object the coven tends. While it boils, each allied hag within 15 ft. regains 5 hit points at the start of its turn. If the cauldron is destroyed, this benefit ends.

Actions

Scalding Spew. Ranged Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, range 20 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (3d6) fire damage, and the target's speed is halved until the end of its next turn from clinging brew.

Reactions

Ill Omen Brew. When an ally within 15 ft. is reduced to 0 hit points, the cauldron belches a portent; that ally instead drops to 1 hit point (usable once per short rest).

A squat clay pot ringed with carved sigils, forever simmering with something that smells of the grave. The sisters feed it bones and prophecies.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC13

Open with Evil Eye on the loudest front-liner, then claw whoever closes. Kill-priority is anyone reaching for the eye: if it is stolen she fights at disadvantage. Pair her with a second hag or a melee brute so she can stay back and curse.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP13d8+65 (123) To-hit+6Save DC15

She is the coven's caster, not a solo boss. Open with Evil Eye, hold the shared eye for truesight and advantage, and lean on Whispered Doom to stack failed saves. If clustered, lead with fear; when bloodied, pass the eye to a fleeing sister and retreat behind the cauldron. Pair her with a bigger threat or two more hags to unlock Coven Magic.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+8Save DC17

Run her as the prophecy-caster anchoring a high-tier coven. Open with bestow curse on the party's striker, chain Evil Eye and Whispered Doom to lock down saves, and claw any thief lunging for the eye. Kill-priority for the party is the eye-holder; for the DM, keep her at range and let the front-line hag or boss soak hits.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Graeae Witches?

A single Graea is built as a CR 6 caster (2,300 XP) at her native tier. Tier-1 and tier-3 sheets are provided to scale her for level 1-4 or 11-15 parties; the traits never change, only the numbers.

Can Graeae Witches be a companion or ally?

Yes, in spirit. The bundled companion is The Brimming Cauldron, the coven's bound hearth that heals nearby hags and spews scalding brew. A lone Graea can also be run as a grudging oracle who trades a true (if cruel) prophecy for a favor or for the return of her stolen eye.

Why frame the Graeae as fey instead of fiends?

The Grey Sisters are public-domain Greek myth, the daughters of the old sea who share one eye and one tooth and guard the road toward the dead. The hag (fey) type fits their prophetic, bargaining, coven nature far better than a devil or demon framing.
