Haechi
Haechi — The Encounter
Horned Lion of Fire That Devours the Unjust · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.
Who Is Haechi
The grimoires of the eastern courts name the haechi a beast of unbending law, born where fire first learned to tell truth from falsehood. It is said to walk the thresholds of palaces and temples, the bell at its throat tolling whenever a guilty tongue draws near. Where a magistrate's wisdom fails, the haechi does not: it lowers its single horn and gores the wrongdoer, then swallows their dishonesty in a breath of cleansing flame, leaving the innocent untouched amid the blaze. Scholars carve its likeness above gateways to ward off fire and corruption alike, for the haechi is immune to the flames it commands and will turn them only upon those whose hearts it has weighed and found wanting. To meet its amber stare while harboring a lie is to feel judgment already passed; honest folk find in it a fierce and patient guardian.
Run Haechi in Sixty Seconds
- Hold until the party clusters or shows its hand, then charge — Pounce is the haechi's whole opening, so it wants a straight 20-foot lane to knock a target prone and Bite as a bonus action.
- Kill-priority: Sense the Guilty lets it ignore tanks and beeline the deadliest striker or caster; gore that target first, every round.
- Recharge: hold Pyre of Judgment for two-plus targets in the 30-foot cone — guilty foes save at disadvantage, so flag the obvious aggressor.
- When bloodied (63 HP), it fights smarter not wilder: lead with the cone, fall back to high ground, and use Toll of the Bell every round to lock down reactions and counterspells.
- Three ways to run it: palace guardian that only attacks proven liars/thieves; a boss's fire-breathing enforcer that body-blocks the front line; or a wild fire-omen that the party must calm rather than kill.
Haechi
Large monstrosity, lawful neutral
CR 6 · 2,300 XP · GUIDELINESense the Guilty. The haechi knows when any creature it can see is knowingly lying, and it has advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks. It can pinpoint, by scent and conscience alike, the most guilty creature within 60 feet that it has line of sight to.
Pounce. If the haechi moves at least 20 feet straight toward a creature and then hits it with a Gore attack on the same turn, that target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone. If the target is prone, the haechi can make one Bite attack against it as a bonus action.
Actions
Multiattack. The haechi makes one Gore attack and one Bite attack.
Gore. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 4) piercing damage.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.
Pyre of Judgment (Recharge 5–6). The haechi exhales righteous flame in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in that area makes a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 31 (7d8) fire damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. A creature the haechi has identified as guilty has disadvantage on this save.
Bonus Actions & Reactions
Toll of the Bell. Reaction (1/round). When a creature within 30 feet the haechi can see begins casting a spell or telling a deliberate lie, the bell at its throat rings. That creature must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be unable to take reactions until the start of its next turn.
A horse-tall lion-dog with a single curved horn, dragon scales sheeting its haunches, and a bronze bell slung at its throat, the haechi prowls a ring of flame atop a carved Korean ward-disc. Its maned face is locked in a perpetual snarl reserved for the dishonest.
Haechi, Bound
Companion · acts on your initiative
Bound · GUIDELINEEmber Hide (signature). When a creature within 5 feet hits the Haechi with a melee attack, that creature takes 4 (1d8) fire damage.
Actions
Searing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) fire damage.
Reactions
Guardian's Lunge. When an ally within 10 feet is hit by an attack, the Haechi moves up to its speed toward that ally; the attacker takes 5 (1d10) fire damage if the pup ends adjacent to it.
A house-dog-sized whelp of the same fiery blood, all scales and embers, that nips at liars' heels and refuses to leave a just companion's side.

How It Fights — by Tier
Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.
Open with Pounce to knock the loudest attacker prone, then Bite as a bonus action. Save Pyre of Judgment for two or more clustered foes. Pair it with a temple captain or shaman; the haechi is the guard-beast piece, not the brain of the fight.
Use Sense the Guilty to lock onto the party's most dangerous striker and gore them down first. Open with a Pounce charge, then alternate Gore/Bite while Pyre of Judgment recharges. Toll of the Bell shuts down enemy casters at range. It pairs best flanking a flagship boss, denying reactions while the boss lands its big hits.
Lead with Pyre of Judgment into the densest cluster, then Pounce the squishiest caster and pin them prone for bonus Bites. Bell their counterspells away with Toll of the Bell. Run it as the boss's loyal enforcer that body-blocks the front line.

How a bound creature acts
- A companion acts on its owner's initiative, immediately after the owner.
- It uses the Companion block above — roughly ×0.6 HP and damage, no recharge abilities, and at most one reaction trait.
- It moves freely; it takes its Action only while its owner is conscious.
- At 0 HP a companion is broken, not dead — restored on a long rest unless your table rules otherwise.

Questions, Asked at the Table
What CR is Haechi?
Haechi is built at CR 6 (2,300 XP) in its native Tier 2 form — AC 16, 127 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. The record also gives drop-in Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 3 (~CR 11) stat lines so you can scale it to your table without rebuilding the creature.
Can Haechi be a companion or ally?
Yes. A haechi that judges the party honest becomes a fierce guardian, and the bundled Cinder-Pup, Bound (AC 14, 76 HP) is a ready-made loyal ally that punishes attackers with fire and lunges to defend wounded companions. Both lean lawful, so they expect honesty in return.
Why doesn't Haechi have legendary actions?
Haechi is designed as an add-on threat — a guardian-beast or a boss's enforcer — rather than a solo centerpiece. It hits its native band cleanly without a band-drop, so pair it with a flagship adversary; its Toll of the Bell reaction and Sense the Guilty targeting do the heavy lifting in a group fight.
