Hakon Blightsworn — The Encounter

Plague-touched hammer-thane of a rotting Northern hold · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Hakon Blightsworn

They name him Hakon Blightsworn, last hammer-thane of a Northern hold the sagas no longer sing of. When the rot-fever came down from the fells it took his kin, his cattle, and his gods in a single black winter, yet it would not take him. The pox settled into his bones instead and made of him a vessel: where Hakon walks, wells go foul and grain blackens in the sheaf. He took up the great maul of his fallen jarl and hung it with the iron weights of his buried children, and now he wanders the dead-lands swinging it for any who would deny him passage or pity. He believes himself cursed to outlive everything he loves, and so loves nothing, and breaks what others do. To meet him on the ice-road is to carry his sickness home in your lungs, whether or not his hammer ever finds you.

Carrier of Rot. Signature. Hakon's body festers with the blight he bears. A creature that hits him with a melee attack while within 5 feet, or that is hit by his hammer, must on a failed DC 14 Constitution save contract a creeping sickness: it gains no benefit from short rests until it succeeds on a DC 14 Constitution save at the end of each of its long rests. While sickened this way it has disadvantage on Constitution saving throws.

Unbowed. Hakon has advantage on saving throws against being frightened, and on Strength checks and saves to resist being moved or knocked prone.

Actions

Multiattack. Hakon makes two attacks with his Blight-Maul.

Blight-Maul. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 17 (3d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage, and a Large or smaller target must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be knocked prone.

Festering Throw (Recharge 5-6). Hakon hurls a rotted iron weight at a point within 30 feet. Each creature in a 10-foot radius takes 14 (4d6) bludgeoning damage and 7 (2d6) poison damage, or half on a successful DC 14 Dexterity save.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Spiteful Swing. When a creature Hakon can see drops him to half his hit points or fewer, he immediately makes one Blight-Maul attack against it (reaction).

A towering half-giant thane in dented plate and matted furs, one hand dragging a maul slung with rusted plague-weights, his flesh weeping with the rot he carries from hold to ruined hold.

Plague-Scent (signature). Hakon Blightsworn has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell and can track a creature sickened by Hakon's rot without a check.

Actions

Diseased Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 2) piercing damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 13 Constitution save or be poisoned until the end of its next turn.

Reactions

Guard the Thane. When a creature within 5 feet attacks Hakon, Hakon Blightsworn can move up to its speed toward that creature; if it ends adjacent, the attacker has disadvantage on the triggering attack.

A gaunt, sore-flecked wolfhound that never leaves Hakon's heel, breathing the same foul air and sharing the same long curse.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP6d10+18 (51) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Festering Throw to scatter a clustered party, then wade into the strongest melee fighter and try to knock them prone. Kill-priority is whoever is healing the sick. Pair him with a bigger threat - he is the brute that holds the line, not the centerpiece.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP15d10+45 (127) To-hit+7Save DC14

Open by closing on the heaviest armor and trading hits so Carrier of Rot saps their rests; Festering Throw any cluster. When bloodied, Spiteful Swing punishes the burst-damage dealer. Kill-priority the cleric. Pairs as the bruiser add to a flagship caster or jarl boss.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP22d10+88 (209) To-hit+9Save DC17

Throw first to soften the group, then anchor on the front line and grind. Use Spiteful Swing and prone-knockdowns to deny the melee their full turns; the rot debuff matters across a long fight. Kill-priority the controller. Still an add - flank him with a stronger boss.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Hakon Blightsworn?

Natively CR 6 (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 16, 127 HP, +7 to hit, DC 14. Scale him with the Tier 1 (~CR 2) or Tier 3 (~CR 11) lines in the table - the traits and actions stay identical, only the numbers move.

Can Hakon be a companion or ally?

He works better as an antagonist or grudging temporary muscle than a party member - his Carrier of Rot trait actively sickens anyone fighting beside him in melee. If you must ally him, treat the rot as friendly-fire the table opts into, or reflavor it as latent while he is allied.

Is Hakon a solo boss?

No. He has no legendary actions and is built as an add-on bruiser - drop him next to a flagship threat (a jarl, a witch, a draugr-lord) where his line-holding and rest-denial buy that boss time. Run alone, an action-economy party will simply focus him down.
