Hasmed — The Encounter

The Angel of Annihilation, who unmakes what the heavens condemn · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Hasmed

Among the malakhei habbalah, the angels of destruction set apart in the old commentaries, Hasmed is counted the most patient. Where its kin descend in storm and fire, Hasmed arrives only after judgment is written, for it is the hand that carries out what the heavens have already condemned. The grimoires name it the Angel of Annihilation: it does not punish the living so much as erase what has been weighed and found wanting, sealing the ledger so the matter cannot be reopened. Its halo is said to be a ring of verdict-light, and those who meet its gaze feel their own name being read aloud in a court they cannot see. Scribes warn that Hasmed neither hates nor hungers; it feels nothing but the cold certainty of a task assigned. To bargain with it is futile, for it did not choose the sentence and cannot rescind it. One may only hope never to have been named.

Halo of Erasure. Hasmed sheds the cold light of a verdict already passed. Signature. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by Hasmed's radiant or necrotic damage is not merely slain but unmade: it cannot be restored by anything short of resurrection or stronger magic, and any creature that witnesses it must succeed on a DC 14 Wisdom save or be frightened of Hasmed until the end of its next turn.

Sentence of the Heavens. When Hasmed hits a creature, it may mark that creature as Condemned (no action required, one creature at a time). Hasmed's attacks against the Condemned creature ignore resistance to radiant and necrotic damage, and it has advantage on those attacks while the creature is below half its hit points.

Actions

Multiattack. Hasmed makes two attacks: one with its Withering Touch and one with its Annihilating Bolt, or it casts a cantrip and makes one weapon attack.

Withering Touch. Melee Spell Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (4d6+4) necrotic damage, and the target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage until it finishes a long rest.

Annihilating Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +7 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (4d8+3) radiant damage. If the target is Condemned, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be blinded until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Pronouncement (Reaction). When a creature within 30 ft. drops to 0 hit points, Hasmed may move up to its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

A gaunt, robed angel haloed in a ring of cold blue fire, its hair streaming upward like flame burning the wrong way, one clawed hand extended to deliver a sentence no plea can revoke.

Reading of the Name (signature). Once per turn, when an ally hits a creature Hasmed has marked as Condemned, that creature takes an extra 7 (2d6) radiant damage.

Actions

Ring of Cold Fire. Ranged Spell Attack: +6 to hit, range 60 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (3d6+4) radiant damage.

Reactions

Stay the Plea. When an enemy within 30 ft. casts a spell of 3rd level or lower, Hasmed forces a DC 14 Constitution save or the spell fails and is wasted.

A drifting halo of blue verdict-fire, broken from Hasmed's brow, that hangs over the condemned and recites the charge against them.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP8d8+16 (52) To-hit+4Save DC12

Open with Annihilating Bolt from max range and mark the squishiest caster as Condemned. Hover out of melee and let the party come to it; flee upward if it can't finish a target. Pair it with a bigger celestial or undead boss so it acts as the finisher, not the frontline.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · NATIVE
AC16HP14d8+56 (119) To-hit+7Save DC15

Open by Condemning the party's healer or controller, then alternate Annihilating Bolt at range and Withering Touch when forced into melee to grind down hit point maximums. Kill-priority is anything below half HP — advantage from Sentence of the Heavens makes the kill near-certain. It is the executioner piece: pair it with a flagship angel boss to mop up whoever the boss bloodies.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · GUIDELINE
AC18HP20d8+120 (210) To-hit+9Save DC17

Open by Condemning the highest-threat PC and stay airborne, raining Annihilating Bolts and using Pronouncement to reposition the instant anyone drops. Focus the Condemned target until Halo of Erasure unmakes them, frightening the rest. Slot it beside a legendary boss as the dedicated kill-confirm so the party can never safely revive.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Hasmed?

Hasmed is built as a CR 6 centerpiece add-on (Tier 2, levels 5-10): AC 16, 119 HP, +7 to hit, save DC 15. Drop it to the Tier 1 line (CR ~2) for a level 1-4 party or scale up to the Tier 3 line (CR ~11) for levels 11-15. The traits stay identical at every tier; only the numbers move.

Can Hasmed be a companion or ally?

Yes, but it is a grim one. As an NPC ally, Hasmed serves a verdict rather than a person — it will execute a condemned foe flawlessly but never spare one, and it answers no plea. Use the bound companion sidebar (Verdict-Light) if you want its judgment as a lighter, controllable presence at the table.

Is Hasmed a boss or a support threat?

A support threat. Hasmed is solo_capable=false: it has no legendary actions and folds quickly under focus fire. It shines as the executioner beside a flagship celestial boss — the boss bloodies a target, Hasmed Condemns and erases it. Run it alone only as a tense set-piece, not a climactic solo fight.
