Huitzilopochtli — The Encounter

Hummingbird of the South, sun-lord throned on the war-pyramid · a boss your table can run with almost no prep. SRD 5.1-compatible.

Who Is Huitzilopochtli

Foremost among the powers the southern peoples raised altars to, the Hummingbird of the South is the lord of the noonday sun and the patron of the warrior's death. The chronicles tell that he was born already armored, full-grown and burning, to drive off the host of his envious kin upon the Hill of the Serpent, and that he carried the weapon called the Fire Serpent, a shaft of living flame that no shield could turn. He demands that the sun be fed, and so his rites are written in blood and in the courage of those who fall facing the foe. Where his throne-pyramid stands, the braziers never gutter and the carved disc of the sky-wheel turns without hands. To meet him is to stand at high noon with no shade: he does not rage, he simply shines, and those unworthy of his light are burned from the world like morning mist off the steps of his temple.

Sunfire Aura. (Signature.) At the start of each of Huitzilopochtli's turns, every creature within 15 feet of him takes 7 (2d6) fire damage. A creature that begins its turn in his aura and starts the turn already on fire takes an extra 7 (2d6) radiant damage as the noon sun glares down.

Turquoise Resolve. Huitzilopochtli has advantage on saving throws against spells and other magical effects, and cannot be frightened or charmed while he can see the sky or any open flame.

Actions

Multiattack. Huitzilopochtli makes two attacks with Xiuhcoatl, the Fire Serpent. He may replace one attack with Solar Flare (recharge 5-6).

Xiuhcoatl, the Fire Serpent. Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8+5) piercing damage plus 9 (2d8) fire damage.

Solar Flare (Recharge 5-6). Huitzilopochtli hurls a lance of noon-light at a point within 60 feet. Each creature in a 15-foot-radius sphere makes a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 33 (6d10) radiant damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. Creatures that fail are blinded until the end of their next turn.

Bonus Actions & Reactions

Wings of the Hummingbird. Bonus Action. Huitzilopochtli flies up to half his fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks, trailing embers; the first creature he passes within 5 feet takes 5 (1d10) fire damage.

Legendary Actions (3/Round)

Sun-Strike. Huitzilopochtli makes one Xiuhcoatl attack.

Searing Step (Costs 1 Action). He moves up to his speed; each creature he ends adjacent to makes a DC 16 Dexterity save or takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Dawn's Command (Costs 2 Actions). Huitzilopochtli flares with light. Each creature of his choice within 30 feet makes a DC 16 Constitution save or is blinded until the end of its next turn, and his Sunfire Aura triggers immediately.

Cast in feathered war-regalia upon a stepped throne-pyramid ringed by braziers and crowned with the great solar disc, the Hummingbird-god sits in judgment, the fire-serpent spear laid across his knee.

Actions

Searing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6+5) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Reactions

Coil of Flame. When an ally within 10 feet is hit by a melee attack, Huitzilopochtli lashes the attacker for 5 (1d8) fire damage and the attacker must succeed on a DC 14 Strength save or be pushed 5 feet.

The living spear of fire, a serpent of flame that strikes from the god's hand and returns; bound to a worthy bearer it fights as a loyal beast of war.

How It Fights — by Tier

Same creature, scaled threat. The traits never change; only the numbers move.

Tier 1Levels 1-4 · GUIDELINE
AC14HP45 (7d8+14) To-hit+4Save DC13

Run him as a temple-guardian avatar rather than the full god. Open with Solar Flare on the tightest cluster, then wade in with Xiuhcoatl and let Sunfire Aura grind the front line. Kill-priority is whoever douses the braziers or breaks line of sight to the sky, since that strips his Turquoise Resolve.

Tier 2Levels 5-10 · GUIDELINE
AC16HP125 (17d8+51) To-hit+7Save DC15

A capstone boss for a mid-tier party. Lead with Wings of the Hummingbird to reach the squishiest caster, Multiattack them, then Solar Flare when two or more bunch up to heal or revive. Focus the cleric, then the controller; pair him with cultist adds only if the party outnumbers him badly.

Tier 3Levels 11-15 · NATIVE
AC18HP195 (23d8+92) To-hit+9Save DC16

His home tier and a true solo. Open from the air with Solar Flare into the cluster, then Multiattack the most fragile target and use legendary Searing Step / Dawn's Command between turns to keep blinding the back line. When bloodied, stop chasing and pin the party inside Sunfire Aura on the steps; he is the flagship, so adds are optional.

Questions, Asked at the Table

What CR is Huitzilopochtli?

His native build is CR 11 (7,200 XP), a Tier 3 solo boss for level 11-15 parties. Because he wields legendary actions he plays up a step, so the sheet is tuned one band below brute force and leans on his Sunfire Aura, blinding light, and aerial mobility. Drop-in stat lines for Tier 1 (~CR 2) and Tier 2 (~CR 6) are provided so you can field a guardian-avatar version of him at any table.

Can Huitzilopochtli be a companion or ally?

As a sun-god avatar he is built to be an adversary or a patron-from-afar rather than a party member. If you want a fiery ally at the table, use the bound Xiuhcoatl companion block: the living fire-serpent spear fights as a loyal war-beast (AC 15, 117 HP) with a searing bite, an aura of flame, and a reaction that lashes anyone who strikes its bearer's allies.

How do I keep a solo deity from dying in one alpha-strike?

Use his mobility and legendary actions. Start in the air with Wings of the Hummingbird so melee can't gang him turn one, spread Solar Flare and Dawn's Command to keep the party blinded and missing, and lean on his resistances (radiant; nonmagical bludgeoning/piercing/slashing) plus fire immunity. With 195 HP and three legendary actions he can soak a burst, then punish the round after.
